Today on Opie & Anthony they did a parody of "Who's Line Is It Anyway?" Danny kept bringing up different premises from the show and was surprised when people weren't familar with them. Did anyone like that piece of shit show? I think improvised standup is awful. Get a set, get costumes and get some decent punchlines, if you're working with more than one person. I know alot of movies and tv shows have fabulous improvisation lines but they don't just pick up a hat and go. In fact fuck you to all comedy troupes and duos. If you're more than one guy and you're on a stage you better have a guitar or drumstick in your hands.

as terrible as "whose line is it anyway" was, if you ever see a real improv group at your local comedy club it is the most embarrassing thing you'll ever witness
there was a special on bravo where they had people like tina fey, horatio sanz, amy poehler, rachel dratch and a few others all improv-ing and it was so unfunny and embarrassing..i can't watch it
when they were doing the "Patti has to guess who her dinner party guests are" the people did just as good of a job as anyone on that show.

I saw an episode of top chef where they went to see an improv comedy troupe that seemed pretty famous. They were horrible.

I think it was a test of Sirius/XM's new receiver monitoring capabilities. They were tracking how many units could be switched to another channel or turned off in a short period of time.

I liked what they did on O&A. I'm talking about real improv on a stage in a comedy club.

I liked that show. It was the only place I've EVER seen Gregg Proops be funny, and he was barely funny.

the only really good improv i heard (and im not even sure if it was improv) was on a cd i bought called "Invite them up" that has a lot of alternative comedians. Anyway, Jon H Benjamin did a bit with David Cross where David Cross was a doctor who specialized in "After birth Abortions" and he also had an inspirational bumper sticker business. It sounded improv-ed to me
best part
"I have a lot of celebrity clients"
"Like who?"
"Paris Hilton"
"Paris Hilton needed an after-birth abortion?"
"No, her parents ask that I abort her..and i said no! shes too old"

The Upright Citizens Brigade used to do free improv shows called Asscat! at the UCB Theatre in NYC on Sunday nights with guests from SNL, Conan and the Daily Show. They may still do them, but I haven't been in years. They were pretty funny.

Dear Mr. Doesn't-Get-The-Bit,
O&A weren't acting like it was funny. It was another bit to enable 'teasing the retards' (patti, david, bobo).
It's not like Ron & Fez ever do 'improv comedy'...oh wait they do...and yes, it sucks, too, on purpose. (hypnosis shows, AJ, crazed, crazy jen).

i went to that theater once to see David Cross...it was an $8 show where he did all his old material because he was going to england where they haven't heard of him and he was rusty. Best comedy show i've ever seen

I was just coming in here to bring up the UCB. I've only been there three times, but all three times were the free improv shows and they were hysterical.
I've been to probably two dozen improv shows at Second City and it's about a 50-50 chance that i'll be hysterical or cringe-inducing.

The worst improv I ever saw was when the Real World cast had to take lessons in Hollywood.

Real World today is just all improv. How can i make myself a standout person in 2 weeks so i won't have to work as a waitress at "Chilis" in Garden City, Long Island.

There's two kinds of improv comedy: the kind where all the jokes are rehearsed and just shoe horned into the improv situation, and real improv. Both can be good or bad, depending on the comedian and the night.
But really, I just have two words in defense of improv: Spinal Tap.

you are right. and a lot of modern comedies are based around that. "Curb your Enthusiasm", all the Apatow crew, the Austin Powers movies are all films that revolve around a script that is made to result in a ton of improve to really bring out the comedy, and its great
that stuff is way cool
but to go to an improv show..its pretty awful
its like, how some "rap influence music" is cool, but i couldn't sit through a pure rap concert

UCB in NYC is the shit.
I still go all the time and it's always sharp. Occasionally, some names do show up which is exciting. They usually ruin the flow but it's good to see Fred Armeisen or go up there and work out the beats.
And the price is always right. 5 bucks here. 8 bucks there.
Good stuff.

We saw the third string from second city on a cruise ship, it wasn't bad but we WERE blasted. One thing though, why the FUCK do Improv people feel the need to sing so much?
