1 guy is still on life support but it looks like they'll be pulling the plug soon :

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090323/ap_on_re_us/police_shot_ca

Mixon's sister, Reynete Mixon, 16, said she was sleeping when police kicked in the door and threw flash grenades, one of which struck her and caused minor burns on her leg. She said she did not know her brother was in the apartment when she fled as shots rang out.

Well boo f-ing hoo. She was struck by a grenade and recieved minor burns while 3 officers were fitted w/ toe tags and another was lying brain dead.

The fucker's uncle said he was trying hard to better his life. That must be why he had the illegal firearms. The 4th cop is brain dead. He's just on life support for organ harvesting.

Mmmhmmm. Had a warrant out because he was missing parole meetings. Also, the main reason why he was in jail previously? Parole violation.

Officer deaths are nothing new in Oakland. The memorial wall in the Oakland Police headquarters shows that at least 47 officers died before Saturday. The wall shows the last officer killed in Oakland was in January of 1999.

Fox News sucks. I think the only reason I go there is because of how badly written the articles are.

If you've had 47 cops killed in the line of duty total, and the last one was 10 years ago, then the first sentence makes no sense, because it's a rare occurrence.

That sentence would be more fitting to describe Philly.

Update: Officer Hege, who had been on life support, died yesterday morning.

is it too hard for the writer to put in a "however"?

If this was about a cop doing something bad, it would be at 10 pages by now.

Just sayin.

I was really surprised about the lack of responses, too. I wanted to post this thread about 12 hours before this one was posted. I was so pissed off, I couldn't do it. BTW... After my son gets out of the Army, he wants to be a cop.

I was going to post the story as well, but was afraid it might turn into a cop bash.

I was impressed when I saw it posted, and looked forward to see peoples thoughts.

And PB, I'm sure there are many other, better things that your son can do with his life after the army, but if he chooses Law Enforcement, I'd welcome him into the fold with open arms.

I understand how you feel about the cop bashing, but I seriously doubt it would have ever elevated to that level.

They are reporting here in California that some of the people on the streets were mocking the cops as they laid in the street dying. I can't seem to find an article on it so it may just be speculation.

Oakland is a fucked up place either way.

Oh, and Chris is totally right.

A possible motive emerged Monday night for why Lovelle Mixon went on the shooting rampage. Police sources told ABC7 that Mixon was the key suspect in an Oakland rape that happened in February. They tentatively matched his DNA to biological evidence in that case. A source says the police are also looking to see if he matches any other rape cases.

ABC7 also confirmed late Monday night that Mixon then stood over the patrol cops and shot them again, execution style in the head. He then fled to his sister's apartment and fired a semiautomatic weapon as he hid in closet. The bullets blasted through walls.

"The officers remaining in the apartment literally battled their way to the backroom. They were facing fire from what we can only describe as a military-style weapon," Sterns explained.

I had heard that they were mocking, heckling cops at the memorial soon afterward, due to bad blood between the police and the public after an unarmed man was shot by police in January.

I was surprised myself when I saw it wasn't posted.

I wanted to past it once I read that little blurb about the sister getting " burned ".

You're so right about how this would be numerous pages if it wasabout a cop doing something wrong.

I wish the police departments had enough pull and/or sack to just say " We are no longer responding to calls in that neighborhood. Lose our phone#. "

Wall it off like Escape From NY and concentrate on communities were people value lives.

I know you'd be punishing several good people by doing this but sometime sacrafices have to be made..

Oh and to take it up a notch, before you wall it up, go in and burnb a lot of the infrastructure, just to teach a lesson.

Not everyone here hates the police. I'm on the side that respects them, despite a few bad apples or the idiotic belief that many are just power-trippin' bullies from high school.

That guy was a BART cop (MTA for you NYC folks) but I can't imagine Oakland has ever really liked their police department.

Still...4 guys shot dead by a rapist and the community mocks? Something I'll just never understand.

About 60 people marched and rallied in Oakland on Wednesday to condemn the police and honor Lovelle Mixon, who was killed by Oakland police after he fatally shot four officers Saturday. (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/03/25/MNDD16N9VP.DTL)

I really try hard not to hate people...but, for the protesters I'll make an exception.

People are so ignorant and full of hate.

A sincere fuck you to anyone who was marching on behalf of the rapist/killer.

The group that protested the memorial service is the black equivalent of the Westboro Baptist Church. They're insane. I'm surprised Fred and the boys haven't shown up themselves, but it might be a little dark out for them, if you know what I'm sayin'.

A rally to show support for the cops held at about the same time drew a much larger -- and very nicely multicultural -- crowd. But somehow that didn't get as many news cameras.

Really tragic and sad. I hate the world sometimes.

Yes, apparently an innocent guy was shot earlier this year so this group hates the cops so much they were honoring the dirt bag that shot them.

I've never understood why certain militants who shot sleeping Israeli children in a settlement got heroes' funerals. People are simply not supposed to be understood I guess.

Rip to the officers.

FWIW every traffic stop in LA should be by cops in FULL swat gear, pointing M16's or MP5's at the car while they approach.

Cops are outgunned by these animals, cant defend yourself with a 9mm against a 7.62.

I thought the LA cops were packing .40 cal Glocks? But to Earthbrown's point, cops should have an AR-15 in the trunk for those times it's needed.

not sure...I know here in Rochester(murder capital of NY), cops have 9mm Beretta's 7 rnd magizeens, allowed one in the gun, and 2 extras for a total of 25rnds. Not allowed a secondary weapon, few have shotguns. Might as well have a .357 revolver.
