What kind of foods do you normally bring camping? Could be just for a weekend or a week long or more.
When I go camping with a big group, I like to bring the following (pre-prepared):
Two lbs Sausage, Peppers, and Onions in lots of Au Jeus (Peppers and Onions separate for vegetarians)
Family Sized stouffers Mac N'Cheese
Occasional Roasted Veggies platter (carrots, sweet potatoes, yukon or russett potatoes)
Mini-group or solo foods:
Jerky (Maple & Brown Sugar Ham Jerky, regular Beef Jerky, Vennison Jerky)
Granola and Fruit Bars
Fresh Fruit
Breakfast cereals, eggs, etc
Coffee

Hot dogs, can of beans, smores, tons of water. But the outdoors is so scary I haven't ventured out as an adult. Maybe a good summer idea.

It's amazing how creative people can get with camping food. I believe one time I had penne vodka. But always keep it simple...
Grilled cheese and hot dogs
And of course you're normal breakfast; eggs and meat
I miss camping....

thomas jefferson said that it is "every american citzen's destiny and resonsibility to visit the natural beauty and trails that have been preserved for them." (1804)
for a typical long holiday weekend outdoor get away...
i take meat and potatoes and carrots and onions and tin foil. that takes care of first nites campfire dinner (wrap a mix in the tin foil and toss them in the hot coals for about 40 min, turn frequently.)
first breakfast is eggs and corned beef hash and coffee and toast.
lunch is cold cut hoagies (make your own.)
second dinner is is steak and potatoes (wrap potatoes individually in foil and toss in hot coals of fire for at least an hour) wrap corn on the cob in foil and toss in coals too for twenty min, turning frequently.)
smores at that night campfire.
pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee, juice and toast for second breakfast.
second lunch is grilled hordogs and hamburgers with chips and salads.
third dinner is pasta and sauce, salad, and grill your own garlic bread (have garlic butter spread and fresh baked loaves).
last late night snack is jiffy pop popcorn over the fire.
last breakfast is cereal and fruit.
i also have an ice cream ball. you put milk and icecream packet in cylinder and seal and put salt and ice in outer shell. wrap shell arounf cylinder and then you play catch, hot potato, etc for about twenty min and then enjoy the ice cream.
so, you need a site that provides a fire pit and water at your site. clean restrooms and showers within a short walk are a must too. electric is a plus, but an extension chord and a voltage transformer for youir vehicles cigarette lighter will work. most state and federal parks offer all of the above for around $35 / night. vets, dissabled people, and senior citizens get better rates.
you need to bring a fold-up propane stove, charcoal and lighter fluid, and water. electric hook ups are a plus.
i have these iron things that you put slices of bread in and then fill the middle with pie filling or pizza ingrediants or for grilled cheese. then you close em and stick em in the fire.
i love camping. important to take more than your share of ice and booze and grass. be as friendly as you can and you will have fun.

I got an uncle in Alaska who camps ount when hunting. He brings two dutch ovens. One for meat dishes and one for dserts. Here is one of his awsome and simple dutch oven desert recipes: Line the dutch oven with foil for simple cleaning. dump two large cans of peaches. pour in one box of yellow cake mix. crumble up a couple snickers on top. and pour in one can of 7-up. Cover. set on 12 coals. put 12 coals on top for 45 minutes. It turns into a fucking awsome peach cobbler. You can also substitute any fruit or pie filling for the peaches. You can use any kind of cake mix, and any kind of pop. Another good one is Apple pie filling, spice cake, raisins. root beer. swear to god.

I've done this with cherry pie filling, chocolate cake mix. Throw on some home ice cream while its still hot, um um good.

Been camping hundreds of nights , and have enjoyed all kinds of food , from gas station fare , to the same stuff I eat at home.
I've used my cast iron dutch oven to make cakes ,cobblers and fajitas .
I've used MREs , and dehydrated foods when I'll be camping more than an hours walk from the car .
If you are close to your car you can make anything you like , How about Ice Cream ? Take two cans (coffee) , one small enough to fit inside the other can . Use any recipe for ice cream and seal it inside the smaller can with duct tape (love the stuff) , fill the space between the cans with ice and salt . Roll the can(s) back and forth , back and forth untill it firms up . The resulting mix is like soft serve , a real treat .
Also take an orange and carefully peel it trying to keep as much of the peel intact as possible .Put cinnamon roll dough (pillsbury) inside the peel , and wrap in foil , then throw it in the fire , cover with coals for 10 minuites (approx) . the peel keeps it from burning and gives it flavor .
S'mores SUCK , marshmalow and dirt/sand do not mix well.
If I'm backpacking and keeping weight down (no ice) , I opt for lipton noodles and sauce .Tuna and chicken are availible in foil pouches now , just stir in at the end for a hearty chicken noodle blend . Enough for two people , but I gorge and eat it all. Great in sub freezing temps.
Canned or dry milk (parmalot), spray margarine ,spam (yuck), nut butter,"newtons",oatmeal packets, raisins & craisins, nuts , instant coffee and hot choco mix for mochas ,and dry beans are great for backwoods camping.
If you plan on being close to your car , and aren't worried about weight , make anything you like , but do as much of the prep you can before you leave home (measure out flour , leavening for pancakes , chop and freeze vegies for stew , fajitas etc and keep in cooler , freeze steaks and burgers to keep your ice longer , and keep meat fresh for a few days .
Be careful if heating in the can the food came in , open top and make sure the bottom is solid and not sealed as the top is , because the heat will cause the bottom seal of the can to melt off . Small cans of beanie wienie can just be popped open a little and placed on the fire .
Run your cooking routine in your head , heat up SKILLET , brown MEAT flip with SPATULA , cover meat with ... "Oh I forgot to pack FOIL" This will keep you from forgetting anything . I forgot to bring a pot once , had to pay 15 dollars for a 5 dollar pot at the forest .
If you do forget anything you could skin a buck or run a trout line....:smoke:

Crack an egg or two into the foil when there is about 5 minutes left to cook and you've got yourself a nice omellete.

I used to camp a lot when I was young (Eagle Scout and went to Philmont 3x:bye:), back in the day ate a lot of "Mountain House" freeze dried food. It's really not bad, esp the freeze dried pears. Take a plastic back full of Bisquick or cornbread mix. Don't forget to hang your deodorant and toothpasted in your bear bag - I learned the hard way on that one. Have fun!

Jebus, we got the light campers here.
A rifle with extra ammo, sleeping bag, roll of toilette paper, matches, extra socks, tooth brush, duct tape, a few zip lock bags, a 3 foot piece of tin foil folded into a square, 6 oz of bleach (disinfect water), a metal fork, and a pocket knife. If expecting rain pack an 8x8 tarp.

Back in '95 I hiked the AT. There wher these two girls that went by the names, Spork and Foon. They were vegetarians. They also had a big ol' German Shepard they were hiking with. His name was Kirby. They said they had two other dogs at home and they named all of them after vacume cleaners.
One day after getting into the shelter Kirby took off into the woods to do some dog things. WHen he came back he had a half dead squirrel in his lips. Spork and Foon were over whelmed by this. But let me tell you.....It pailed in comparison to when I finished off the poor little squirrel by throwning his hind legs in a cook pot of ramen noodles an ate him up. Hummmy!! It wasn't bad at all.
That was the last time I saw Spork and Foon.
