View Full Version : I'm sick of drummers getting the short end of the (drum) stick...snicker.

OK, let's just clear one thing up right off the bat. I've accepted my role as a glorified metronome to an extent and being in the background behind a kit. I understand that and am fine with my position in my band. My playing, accents, power and all that speak for me.
What pisses me off is we can't even get any respect in the music stores!
I just flipped through a Guitar Center mailer I got and the fucking drum section is 2 pages in the very back of the book. Lame shit bro.
Also, even in a bigger store like Guitar Center, where is the drum section? It's always in the back, like the drums are something to hide or aren't important enough to have everyone walk by to notice.
And forget about it in the smaller, independently owned stores. If there's one instrument that is ALWAYS overlooked and given the shittiest showing in a small music shop, it's the fucking drums. The "drum" section at a small music store is usually 5 or 6 assorted snare skins, one company's line of drum sticks, a few shitty cymbals and one kit set up that no one will let you touch.
Come on man. I know it's not glamorous to play the drums compared to being a big front man, but we're needed and I haven't heard a believable replacement for us in music where drumming actually plays a key in the sound.
Show some respect bitchez!

The drums are at the back of the stage.
Seems like all is right.

There's atleast 3 times as many people that play guitar and bass.
That's why they get the bigger part of the store.
Plus, do you really think it's a great idea to have drums at the front of the store by the entrance? You would scare away everyone that got near the front door...

I hate to break it to you Moe, but drummers are weirdos.
It's just a fact of life.
Singers are egotistical douchebags, bass players are dullards, drummers are psychopaths, and guitarists are good natured, down to earth, fun guys.

EVERY FUCKING TIME I PLAY AT A STORE! I just gave up even doing that like 5 years ago. I just walk in, get my shit and walk out. It's kinda fun to throw a few beats down in the store sometimes, but they are always busting my balls. They actually asked me to play some "jazzy" beats instead. Dude, look at me. I don't ease into "jazzy" beats, sorry bra. Now go try to rip that guy off who came in looking for a snare drum for his son.

I mean OK, I do understand most kids want to strap a 6 string on and "rock" out like whoever their new douchebag musical hero is that week. Just not sure why drummers get treated like a fucking disease in music stores. Our equipment is more expensive. We have constant upkeep on them like the other instruments. We want upgrades just like other instruments.
Why the shaft?

Who's the guy that hangs out with the band? The drummer.
What do you call a drummer with no girlfriend? Homeless.
I forget so many.

I remember in high school, as a drummer, to get the equipment I needed, I had to drive to three hours to South Bend Indiana from Michigan. There was a great store there that had everything. I think it was primarily a brass and woodwind store but they had every kind of drumstick made, every type of head and lots of hardware. It was fuckkin awesome.
People still think drummers are unmusical neanderthals bashing away with no sense of dynamics, and in some instances that is the case. But it's also true for bass players and guitarists.

Very true. I've seen plenty of guitarists, bassists and vocalists that have no fucking idea what timing, rhythm or pitch are.

Ok fair enough Moe. That's just habit and ball busting.
... it's probably the case for most of the drummers I've played with that they ARE just metronomes but if you find a true drummer- someone with talent. It's like nothing else.
I've been fortunate enough to work with at least a couple guys like this - it was like forging off into the unknown with someone. You go a little then he goes ahead and opens something else up and you just keep going pushing eachother - that's as a guitarist.
I really can't think of any other dynamic where this happens (in rock and roll anyway)... the drummer's very important and should bring attitude to his playing and be confident and artistic ... simultaneously ballsy and out front and giving deference...and it makes all the difference- I have a drum machine for anything else.
and hey... it's GUITAR center!! haha. But sure enough the drums are always in the back in any store.

Hi Moe--
I think we talked about my drum lesson that I took on Stewart Copeland's birthday. I so WISH I was a better student!!! I wanted to hold the drums the way Copeland did. But, then again, I could have gotten some simple techniques out out of him.
If I REALLY made an efffort, I think I would have been a good drummer if I started a bit youngerl I'll never know unless I do it.

Perfect description of most important member of the band - quiet, not flashy, yet gets the most important job done well with no drama or unneeded attention to himself/herself. Bassist - heart of and key player of the band...and fucking fantastic in the sack.
