Having a laser "trim" April 13th. My urologist says I will have almost immediate relief but I'm wondering what the recover time will be like. How long will I be laid up etc?

Most of you young guys will eventually reach a time when you would give almost anything for a good piss.

My prostate has been slowly expanding - inward and squeezing off the urine stream to a point where I could barely pee. And not draining the bladder completely leads to prostrate infections. I've had four acute attacks since September. But my ultrasounds and scope checks show no signs of cancer etc and my yearly PSA numbers have always been good. So I'm hoping it will be as simple as he says it will be.

And if it is that simple I'm wondering why I didn't have it done 10 years ago. :wallbash:

good luck with the surgery! I'm assuming you've been tried on medication to shrink your prostate (Avodart or Proscar) or medication to decrease the pressure across the prostate (Flomax).

My great uncle devised one of the first "resectoscopes" for reaming out the prostate...he was a pretty inventive dude. It sounds like your urologist is going to blast the tissue out with a laser. The old way (using a sharp tube to glob out core after core until the prostate was clear) had one benefit...you got a lot of tissue to look at under the microscope to screen it for cancer. You can't really examine burned tissue the way you can tissue that's simply been cut, but in your case it's irrelevant because you don't have any signs of cancer in the first place.

a decent pictoral of the transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP)...the laser version just uses a laser to vaporize the tissue

Loss of work time is estimated to be 7 to 21 days, but you have to ask your urologist about this...it really depends on his/her skill and the procedure they're going to do.

good luck with it! let us know how it goes.

steve

You're the best, Dr. Steve.

Yes my friendly urologist tried me on 30 days of Flomax and it did nothing. (But those four gay looking guys look so happy in their Mustang convertible!)

I just got squeezed off and need a ream job.
