Dr Steve,
I have, for some time now, been looking for foods that have been bothering my tummy.
I usually have noxious gas, but never knew why. I tried changing my eating style (slower, smaller pieces) to eating so slow to make sure im not swallowing any air when i chew with no such luck.
Everything gives me gas, but especially milk. Milkshakes often come out looking identical as going in.
My father has a pretty nasty soybean allergy, as well.

My question to you is:
If I have a milkshake per day, knowing full well what it does to me, will that harm my body in any way? I wish to punish it for not enjoying perhaps the greatest treat of all.

Have you tried milk digestant tablets for the milk issues? 'Cause you may have lactose intolerance.

Also, have you been tested for gluten, soy or lactose allergies?

It might be a relatively cheap way to narrow down your problem. Try taking the milk digestants before your next milkshake - you can get them OTC both in brand-name and generic, at the local drugstore, supermarket or even Target. - and see how you do. If that solves it, you may have a lactose sensitivity.

If they don't help, check it out with your doctor. The big offenders for people whose systems are a bit "off" tend to be lactose, soy and gluten. Soy and gluten are allergy problems while lactose can be either an allergy issue or an enzyme issue. (Personally, I can't drink milk straight anymore without tummy troubles unless it's organic or full-fat ... or I add a tablespoon or so of live, active-culture yogurt. I also do this if I am making Instant Breakfast to add to the protein content; it helps me stay full longer.)

ironic you post this...
pa-dukes has a soy allergy, and ma-dukes has come down with a gluten problem, which was giving her IBS.

Mike:

It sounds as if you have a lactase deficiency. Lactase is the enzyme that "cracks" lactose into two molecules of digestible sugar. Without it, you pass lactose into the bowel whole, and the bacteria in the gut go nuts fermenting the hell out of it, causing bloating, gas, pain, and diarrhea. You may, therefore, be lactose intolerant. To find out if this is true, simply go buy a bottle of LACTAID, which is a digestive supplement containing lactase. Take it before you drink your milkshake; if it works, diagnosis made! Your family doc or a gastroenterologist would be the best ones to talk to about this kind of problem.

Let me know how it goes.

your pal,
