So this weekend was amazing. It was the first time I've actually spent time in Manhattan, and other than the complete lack of money I have now, I never wanted to leave. I asked people what we should do while we were there, and no one really knew. I guess there's so much to do that no one knows specifically what to do.

We went to MoMA, Museum of Natural History, walked through Times Square on a Saturday, went to Donut Plant (awesome Creme brule donut, but the Lower East Side sucks balls), and spent a bunch of time in Greenwich Village. We went to the Comedy Cellar to see Colin Quinn + Greg Giraldo and Jim Norton ended up doing 15 minutes. That was pretty awesome. We went to craftbar for brunch. We also hit a lot of bars (mostly Irish pubs) and made it to an awesome southern cooking place with $3.50 margaritas all night in Greenwich Village.

We were planning on going to the Frick, but they were closed. And we wanted to do The Met, but did not have enough time to dedicate to it. We never even left the island. We also wanted to go check out Artichoke, but never made it there.

What else did we miss? One thing we could not find was ANY bar with a GOOD beer selection. The ONLY bar I went to with any sort of hefeweizen on tap was the Crowe's Nest, and they broke that before 10pm.

My wife has always wanted to move to NYC and I'm totally with her now. NYC rules.

You know what else NYC has... AIDS and homeless people all built on a garbage dump. Did you get to see that?

But really, sounds like you had a great time. I prefer the Whitney myself.

Glad you had a good time and I'm sorry I missed you, buddy. Hope you make it back real soon.

If you want a great beer selection, hit The Peculier Pub next time you're in town. It's down on Bleecker St. and is a great hang.

not a great bar, and in a boring neighborhood, but if you want a good selection check it out.

I fucking hate NYC, but yea, they have a lot of shit you can't get anywhere else.

Did the MET a long time ago for a college art course, always meant to go back. Did Museum of Natural History a few months back, want to go back this year. Hitting The Bronx Zoo in a few weeks too.

We enjoyed the Bleeker St area. We'll probably stay in that area next time, so we'll definitely check that out.

edit - looking at this bar, I'm pissed. We walked down Bleeker but stopped at MacDougal and drank. If we had kept going, there's no way we wouldn't have stopped at that place. Totally our style.

We saw one bar with what looked like a neat beer selection (unibrou signs out front). We got in, they told us they had "no canadian beers", then the bartender couldn't take a two drink order. She had trouble with "ketel one & tonic and a captain & coke". We left there quick.

and then what happened?

Great post.

The only time LES, and the East Village, are not worth being in is on the weekend night. Busses of NJ mutants flood those neighborhood. Apparently Jersey pride is a Sunday-Thursday concern.

About The Ginger Man

The Ginger Man, named after the outrageous novel by J.P. Donleavy, began its journey in 1986 in an old house in Houston, Texas. This original creation, believed by many to be the first multi-tap bar in America, was hailed by the late British beer guru, Michael Jackson, as one of the finest beer bars in the world. It was to be followed by The Ginger Man bars in Dallas and Austin and, in 1996, what was to become one of New York’s most popular bars, year after year, opened on a grand scale. While its many loyal fans say that it’s more than the sum of its parts, the parts, especially the seventy taps dispensing fresh ales and lagers, backed up by 160 bottles, are pretty impressive. Join us for a beer!

If we could have caught one. We watched like 20 blocks without being able to catch one for some reason. It was the first time we tried catching a cab and I thought it was impossible to catch a cab in NYC.

I don't think we waited more than 20 seconds for a cab after that. Most were instantaneous.

Besides Ginger Man, Peculiar, and David Copperfield's, which are great, you could've stopped in any of these:

Rattle n Hum
either of the 2 House of Brews
Waterfront Ale House
Blind Tiger Ale House
d.b.a.
Perfect Pint
Hop Devil Grill
Stoudts
any of the 4 Heartland Brewery locations
Chelsea Brewing Co.
Croxley Ales

or hopped over to Brooklyn:
Spuyten Duyvil
Barcade
Gate
Brazen Head
d.b.a. Williamsburg

That's just off the top of my head. Point being, there's plenty of good beer to be had in New York!!

I had to pick up a couple of books today, so me and the older kid went to the barnes and noble on 5th avenue. Got off the subway at the Plaza, checked out the Xmas windows at Bergdorfs - unbelievable - swung by to look at the tree at Rock Center, then book shopped. Got hungry, went to Virgils for some
barbeque, then cut through Times Square to catch the 7 train home.

That's why I live here. I didn't have to drive to the mall to buy a couple of books.

We were going to go there, but it appears they only have two beers. Is that true?

Look into this: http://burpcastlenyc.wordpress.com/

Burp Castle was awesome. The bartender actually shusshed the crowd twice because they were getting too loud. She was a complete bitch to everyone and I loved it. I loved that place.

We also checked out Blind Tiger (crowded, but great beer selection and super friendly bartenders) and Anotheroom (loved loved LOVED this place. super dark, great beer selection and great music). We went to about 20 - 30 other places, but those stood out the most. When my friend and I were doing our own mini-crawls on Thursday and Friday, Anotheroom and Burp Castle were the places we ended up just staying at for most of the night.

We were also around Times Square because we were going to get all touristy (top of the rock, which we didn't end up doing), so we grabbed something to eat and drink at Havana Central. I was actually shocked at how good the food was, and the waiter made a table side sangria that was amazing. And it's in (sort of) Times Square! We also did BXL Cafe in Times Square, and they also have a pretty decent beer list.

Also did Decibel, which is a dive sake bar. It was strange, but they had an incredible selection of sake.

McSorley's is pretty cool. And it's definitely about the atmosphere. Old school bar. Historical shit all over. And you always buy two beers (the glasses are smaller).

Not that it's anything crazy but I like the Peculiar Pub at 145 Bleecker. One of those places that has hundreds of beers but still has good prices and a divey feel.

And if you pass one of the two Tuck Shops, you must stop in. Nice meat pies and pick up TimTams. They're pricey cause you pretty much can't get them in the states but these Australian cookies are fuckin insanely good.

We were looking for a place to drink and watch the hockey game on Sunday and were walking down Bleeker and I remembered someone mentioning a bar down in that area with great beers (Peculiar), but we didn't go far enough. I thought it was on the wrong side of 6th, so we ended up at The Grizzly Pear.
