No, We Can't All Get Along

Someone posted a pic of Rodney King earlier (sorry, don't remember who it was or what thread) but it was used to convey the "can't we all get along" sentiment in an attempt to stop a spat.

Well, we can't.

Nor do I think we, as human beings, ever will. The Utopian dream of Star Trek and other futuristic works of fiction that portray all the peoples of Earth united as one is just that; a dream. It will NEVER happen.

I'm not really sure it should, either.

In my years of studying various philosophies and religions, one of the basic precepts of Buddhism always struck me as unnatural and illogical - pacifism. While I can admire someone's dedication to such a difficult ideal, I can't for the life of me make sense of it.

I think if you're the type of person who despises confrontation of any kind and has an overwhelming desire to befriend and love everyone you come in contact with it speaks more to a lack of depth and conviction on your part than a higher spiritual awareness. In my mind, an individual who is willing to take a stand and fight for what he or she believes in is much more admirable than one who is a lamb.

People feel like the world let them down because they were promised success when they were growing up. Never realizing that it could be measured in different ways.

Another way people feel let down is that many people work hard just to keep up with jones' and feel like they are owed something.

I think people don't have to get along on all issues, but sort of reach a middle ground or at least be receptive to other ideas not similar to their own. Appeasement didn't work in WWII with Hitler who saw it as a weakness on the Allies part. If we were all able to get along, this place would be boring. But sometimes the more different we are, the more similar we actually are but in a different degree or context. Like how some people believe in different religions but are similar in that they believe in something higher than themselves or something like that.

I'm with you, Gvac. Avoiding conflict and confrontation just to maintain a fake or superficial level of peace and harmony is weak and wrong.

I do think you are over-simplifying Buddhist teachings on pacifism a bit. Yes, it is against killing and teaches that hatred creates karmic poison. Buddhism also challenges people to look beyond a simple right/wrong dichotomy and approaches morality on a case-by-case basis. Very, very rarely would it be right to kill but there would be times that it is unavoidable. Morality is not as rigid in Buddhism as you get in monotheistic religions.

As for standing up for what you believe in and confronting people who disagree with, I don't think that goes against Buddhist teachings.

The problem with the idea of people getting along and utopia is that people are naturally selfish and will always try and get more than the guy next to them. There have been many attempts to establish communities based on everyone being equal and getting the same share, but they fail.

It is a product of nature. In just about every species the strong and most aggressive prevail because they have more resources and therefore have a better chance to survive.

I think you need to study a lot more. All of the 8 major religions of this world teach the the same principles in similar fashion; do good by yourself and your fellow man. To interpret this further we can delve into the teachings and philosophy of each which will lead you back to the same principle which is the equal treatment of thy neighbor. It is the extremes when this is disregarded leaving you at odds with another person or group. And it is the extremes that has led to war, slavery, etc. Evolution has created differences in physicality, nothing more. It is philosophy interpreted by the individual that has led to differences.
