This asks you to define happiness and can you be happy if some things are good and some things are bad.

I think you cant be happy without some element of strife in your life. Conflict is essential to the human condition- if you are totally unchallenged that inevitably makes you unhappy. If we are placed in a situation of total contentment we will invent reasons to be unhappy and occupy ourselves. So I think happiness is more how you generally feel, not exclusively feel, and the absence of conditions and defects that make it impossible for you to experience that joy when it happens.

Well, the everyday, go to work, party with friends on weekends guy is happy as can be but, the after work, hanging out, alone most of the time guy is definately not happy. In other words, I guess I put on a facade for all the world to see but there is an underlying sadness that previals. Nope - not happy - I want more out of this life.
We are all here but a short time and i feel like it would be nice to maximize all of the spoils before moving on.
Today I am not happy but there is always tomorrow!

interesting.....I think you are forged by stress and conflict, but ideally you come to a point where you achieve your goals and recieve your rewards and can embrace a life of totlal bliss and contentment. I hope to get there someday.

Happiness is temporary. JOY is what you can have in good times and bad. The hard part is finding the source of that joy.

Have you ever met anyone like that? I've never even heard of anyone like that. And even if you are pleased in the short term, how long would that last?
You will always invent new problems. Its where art comes from, its where social issues come from, its where pet therapists come from.

Thats the other thing, there are inevitable problems. Some people could not be happy if they did not start a family. Children are their avenue to bliss but they are also a huge source of problems. Someone wants to pursue a dream, and I'm sure you know how full of obstacles that is. Even if the way is cleared it takes tremendous effort. But we're happy to bear that strife because it tempers the reward.
You need balance. If you were happy from the day you were born to the day you die you wouldn't appreciate that condition, and you certainly wouldn't have earned it. It's not owed to you in any way. And if in later life you can say "I am now 100% happy." are you really? Because you had years where you weren't and why do you arbitrarily decide when to start making the happiness count towards the total? That paradise sortof mindset is impossible to achieve, and ironically is going to bring more conflict into your life.
If my "happy" you mean walking around grinning from ear to ear 24/7, I don't think anyone like that exists outside of an insane asylum.
If you mean contented and at peace with yourself, then yes, I'm extremely happy.

Happiness is over rated. The better goal is to be content. No one can walk around "happy" all of the time unless they suffer from a mental condition. If you can achiev contentment with yourself, your relationships, and your station in life it will open the door to happiness.
True happiness doesn't mean absolute joy and glee. That is insanity.

I think happiness comes from living a life of no expectations. Very few of us can live completely happy.

you bust your ass all your life and when it's time to relax, you get sick and die.

It happens. Which is another reason not to go around feeling like if you aren't 100% happy you're not happy at all.
you bust your ass all your life and when it's time to relax, you get sick and die.
But did you bust your ass on things that you were passionate about? Or did you lead a life that was for the joy of others?

Bruce McColluch from Kids In the Hall once said something very wise
"If you look up "happiness" in Webster's dictionary, you would find that it is defined as - Lucky; Fortunate; Contented with one's lot; Glad Or pleased.
If you were to look up "unhappy" in Webster's dictionary, you would find that it is defined as - Not happy; Miserable; Causing misfortune; Unsuccessful; Disastrous.
I say if it's four a.m. and you're looking up either of these words you're in a little bit of trouble either way, my friend."

Nevermind. I thought you said saved by the bell. Kids in the Hall is fine comedy.

In all honesty, haven't been happy in over a year. And thinking about that fact makes me even more unhappy.
Ba-fucking-humbug.

Happiness is receiving little drops of sunshine on a rainy day... and yes...

Laftershows. Life, here hasn't changed much, but much more bearable with long R&F shows. It's up to each of us how we react to our circumstances, and if we are more happy or sad because of the hand we're dealt and the fates we bring upon ourselves.I value happiness less now than in my first 30 years when I was more an ID-oriented person. http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a65/j3lehane/JerryLehaneIII_Pic.jpg
