Poor Binghamton. Other than the university making the NCAA tournament this year, they never really have a lot going for them. This is the most action they've seen in a while, and it's not the good kind. I hope this ends without any further fatalities.

Ditto. I spent some time in Broome County as a teenager, and going back there is always depressing. Since IBM left Endicott, everything in the area fell apart.

I'm just not sure that the typical immigrant to Binghamton is the "job-taking" type. I have it feeling its more people studying at the university who are looking to extend their stays in this country. In any event, it's appearing this wasn't an anti-immigration crime.

I am a bit surprised that there is this immigration center there; southern tier doesn't seem likely place
s many as 13 people were killed when a gunman opened fire in a bloody rampage in an immigration center in Binghamton, New York, according to Gov. David Paterson. The gunman was among the dead in a shooting spree that according to some accounts wounded 26 others.
Shooting Rampage in Binghamton
Several people were reported dead Friday when at least one gunman opened fire inside an immigrant services center in Binghamton, New York.
"I speak for all of New York when I offer my prayers for the victims and families of this tragedy," Gov. Paterson said hours after the gunman shot several people and took dozens hostage.
The shooter was identified as Jiverly Voong, 42, who was found dead, but it remains unclear if he took his own life or if police officers killed him.
Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand released a joint statement Friday afternoon, saying, "This is a terrible tragedy and our hearts and prayers go out to the victims and their families."
Before his murderous rampage at about 10:30 a.m., Voong pulled a car up to the back door of the facility to block a key escape route. Investigators don't know what prompted the rampage.
Five people with gunshot wounds were being treated at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, according to hospital spokeswoman Christina Boyd. The wounded ranged in age from 20 to their mid-50s, and their conditions ranged from stable to critical, she said.
Linda Miller, a spokeswoman at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, confirmed that a student from Binghamton University was being treated at the emergency room.
A police dispatcher who spoke to The Associated Press wouldn't confirm a number of people shot or injured.
Author Mary Pat Hyland, who once taught a cooking class at the civic center, used her Twitter account to update her readers on what she was seeing and hearing in Binghamton. And at about 2:30 p.m., she offered her assessment on MSNBC.
"This will be the biggest news story ever to come out of this area," she said.
The area is in a stretch on the west side of the Chenango River in the city of about 45,000 near the Pennsylvania border. Emergency vehicles lined the streets in the neighborhood, a mix of homes and small businesses.
The American Civic Association is an organization that helps immigrants in the Binghamton area with naturalization applications, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
The association describes itself as helping immigrants and refugees with counseling, resettlement, citizenship, family reunification and translators.

i like that biden came out and said that this is a federal situation and he promised federal aid, including helicopters (sure, why not?). and that the state has been giving out food and water to the safe immigrants
now people died, but does binghamton need federal aid for this situation?
and did the immigrants need food and water?
i think the politicians just like to make people feel better buy spending a lot on pointless things

One died. The other PLAYED DEAD until she could crawl to a phone and call 911.
Amazing. To suddenly be shot unexpectedly and not just react to the pain or the fear that youll die, but to think about how to help others. How to end this.

I loathe our news media. I don't understand why they need to show pictures of grieving people on the news. Are we so fucking stupid that we cannot comprehend that this is an awful situation and that people were greatly affected? Do we have to pervert the immensely sad moment someone may have in learning that a loved one was murdered in an act of senseless violence by plastering their fucking picture every where? It makes me sick. Really makes my stomach turn.

From the New York Post (http://www.nypost.com/seven/04052009/news/nationalnews/failed_life_for_killer_coward_162952.htm?&page=1): The lunatic behind the Binghamton massacre was a pathetic, gun-loving coward who got divorced, lost his job and was driven to depression because he could barely speak English after many years in the United States, officials and people who knew him said yesterday.
Up to the part about "barely (being able to) speak English" I thought they were talking about a certain co-host of a certain XM morning show.
As much as Jim Norton complains about thos the New York Times editorializes, look at the way the Post goes at it:
Failed Life
Coward
Lunatic
Pathetic
Do I disagree with the Post? Not really.
Do I think he did the right thing? Certainly not.
Do I think the people at the Civic Association had it coming? Not at all.
The odd part about this story is that this guy was hypersensitive. His acquaintances and co-workers were concerned that he might do this kind of thing. Yet many of them still openly mocked him. Now that this guy is dead, there is this quote:
The police chief said Wong's suicide was his final act of failure.
(...)
"He must have been a coward," Zikuski said.
Even in death this guy is mocked.
I am not saying that this incident was justified. I find the way the Post framed this story darkly ironic.
