View Full Version : Why don't we feel sorry for animals?

It's kinda weird that we as humans don't really feel for the life of the animals that we eat every day.
I mean, we feel bad if the dog or cat dies or something, but for the most part, noboby cares how the animal was killed as long as it tastes good on a plate.
However, we're animals and when someone dies, even someone we have never met before, we show some emotion.
I wonder why that is?
My opinion is that we don't care about animals because animals lead the same repetitive lives generation after generation.
They have no different personalities or attitudes as far as people can tell. But a human, no matter the relation to you, gets sympathy because we live and breath in the same way as them.
Does anyone have an opinion?

Historically? My guess- It's because we needed animals to live and survive as a species so we had to put aside any feelings we had towards eating animals in order to successfully kill and eat them. And that just got passed on AND that's what Vegetarian cavemen died out.

Well, my dad was a butcher for 25 years, so every night, he'd come home and still have dead cow bits on his work boots. I guess I got sorta desensitized to it. But I care about my dog. And there are people that eat dogs.

We don't care about the animals that we eat because that is what they were bred for. they were not bred to have as pets but to continue our survival. People care about cats and dogs because they feel that have personalities. If you look at your dog or cat you can find things that make your dog or cat distinct. Chickens, cows, sheep, pigs, no one cares because of the benefit they give us a whole.. pets are pets and food is food...that is my opinion.....
Give me a cartoon and i am happy....

Mmmm...now I'm starving.
Believe it or not - there are actual sociological reasons as to why we eat what we eat. For instance, there are specific reasons why we eat beef and the people of India do not, and it's not just based upon something like religion. Basically, our cultures dictate what foods we eat. However, we human beings are biologically programmed to eat meat (it's true, veggies, it's damn true), so there have to be some animals that are sacrificed for our nourishment.
I don't feel sorry for animals at all. Why should I? We're the higher lifeform. And as a result of that, we've developed the feeling of guilt, which is utterly a useless emotion in nature itself. Do you think a lion feels bad about killing a zebra and eating it? It's silly to think that we should feel sorry for eating animals. The PETA folks drive me nuts with that crap.
I think a lot of times we're pre-occupied with feeling sorry for CUTE animals. We Americans are horrified at the notion of eating dogs, when in reality the only reason we have certain breeds of canines is because they were specifically bred for food (ex. chihuahuas and chows). It's ridiculous to feel that way.
I mean, I love my dog like a child....but if I'm trapped somewhere with him, and it's eat him or starve....I'm eating terrier burgers for dinner.

have you ever seen a black or gray squirrel? Those shits look like they came out of the freaking matrix. There's nothing scarier than an animal with a dark shade of fur. No, an animal with dark fur and eyes that glow in the dark.

You know what I never understood? Why is it that people protest the clubbings and murdering of baby seals but rarely bat an eye at the hundreds of thousands of cows slaughtered each day? Is it because baby seals are cute and cows are not?

Of course there are human who care about the animals that we eat. They're called vegetarians. Ever hear of them. And Se7en, you may say that we were made to eat meat but vegetarians argue that if that were true we'd have short digestive tract so that we could pass the meat before it rots. Carnivorous animals have short tracts and herbivorous one have longer tracts. But it's still your choice. Also there are people who will only by free range chicken...not the ones that stay in cages their whole lives. Sorry Vegeta your statement is poorly researched (if it has been researched at all).
The rats and children follow me out of their homes. The rats and children follow me out of town. Come on kids.

Is it because baby seals are cute and cows are not?Absolutely! We like animals that are cute and cuddly and that we can relate to. You see a cute little seal frolicking on an iceberg or something, you go "awwww!", and you're happy. Then you look at a cow, and it's either a) eating grass or b) defecating. It's hard to develop a strong emotional attachment.
It's like the dolphins. Why do we give a damn about dolphins caught in tuna nets? Cause dolphins are kind of cute and because scientists say they may be as smart as us (or close to it, whatever), so we feel bad. Meanwhile, I'm dying to try some dolphin meat.
I WISH I could remember the name of that book I had to read in college, but it defines much better than I could how exactly we humans DO crave a steady diet of meat. I've forgotten much about what I read of the book, but the author talked quite a bit about how certain proteins found only in the flesh of animals are necessary for our nourishment.

We probably keep dolphins around just because it keeps sick guys from raping women. Have you ever heard the episode of don and Mike tlking about dolphin fetishes? Just disgusting!
Well, with a .9 share, who here would have been listening to the Don and Mike show anyway?

I think all those animal freak and veggies are hipocrites. If you drive a car you are burning dead dinousaurs. It is the same as burning a dead chicken, or eating it. I just don't get these damn tree huggers.

For an excellent treatise on the subject of how diet allowed civilizations, and further allowed diffrentiation of civilization into "advanced" and "backward" nations, read the NY Times bestseller, Guns, Germs and Steel. Excellently written, very provocative.

Although some animals may have intelligence (even this is open to debate), no animal has sentience.
No animal in the world besides us wonders about the morality of eating something they need to survive.
