okay
any advice to help me get
my fan on my new amd
thunderbird 1.4 without
seriously damaging the
chip?

i mean, this is expensive
stuff. and this fan is so hard
to clip onto that little bit of
plastic on the socket...

PLEASE HELP?!

The fan is suppose to go on nice and tight (just like that 15 year old John is banging from the show tonight).

If you have the right fan it should clip right on. Put the fan on after you have the chip set in the motherboard. Whatever you do don't start the computer unless you are sure its on properly otherwise you will fry the chip.

ok
so: turning it on for a
second to see if the
motherboard and everything
are in good shape is a bad
idea, right?

ill keep that in mind.

I don't think a second would do any damage, but I wouldn't turn it on without the fan. Also once you have everything in place and you turn it on make sure the fan is spinning. I had a bad fan and didn't check to see if it was spinning after I turned it on.. Needless to say I fried my Athlon..

Be very careful indeed. The first thing is you absolutely need to have some "thermal compound" between the fan and the chip. This ensures even contact between the cpu and fan. Even a microscopic gap could cause problems.

Click here for examples. Most computer stores have it. Your fan will likely have a plastic pad on it to do the similar job, but professionals seem to agree that the pads are worthless. Check out a website like Sharky Extreme or AnandTech.

It will be a very tight connection. Don't jiggle it as you force the clip, try your best to apply equal pressure.

Killgore - It really isn't complicated. It just as easy as adding ram.

I have some friends who hardwired a water-cooled radiator to cool down the chip. It actually boosts the speed of the processor. Of course, my friends are lonely and don't get laid, but I get lots of free computer advice.

You may want to check the fan's connections to make sure it's getting power.
