Lung transplant.

That's tough to recover from, but well worth it.

Thoughts & prayers ... and get your kids used to scrubbing their hands thoroughly to keep germs at bay. Antirejection meds suppress your immune system. (It only takes 30 seconds' scrubbing, which is roughly enough time to sing the alphabet or "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" ... and, no, you don't have to use antibacterial soap. Regular soap and hot water are enough.)

Best wishes to your Pop-in-Law, Tub.

This is probably as good a place as any to remind everybody on here to sign the back of your drivers license (in NY anyway) to become an organ donor. This way, if any of us fuck up a turn driving home on a rainy night or mouth off to the wrong person outside a bar night, our leftover spare parts can help out somebody like Tub's father-in-law.

Do it.

Hottub
04-08-2009, 04:32 PM

Please do it as soon as you can. You will be doing more good than you can imagine.

Signing up as an organ donor is only (sadly) the first step (http://www.organdonor.gov/donor/index.htm).

The next step, and probably the more important one, is discussing your desire to become an organ donor with your family. Make sure that they're on board with your decision and understand what it will mean if that time should ever come. Know that some drugs used in "life-saving" efforts can have a negative impact on your organs' viability for transplant, so your family may have some tough choices to make very quickly.

Lastly, if you want to put it in writing, get information about organ donor forms and living wills in your state and complete the paperwork. Again, be sure that your family knows about and understands your wishes.

This is a lot more final than donating blood, which you should also do if you are able (http://www.givelife2.org/donor/faq.asp), and you are unlikely to have any say in the final decision unless you've already spoken to your family about it.

Hottub

Please send some positive thoughts and prayers our way.
Hopefully the donated organs will be better this time around.
