TMZ has learned Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a felony hit-and-run car accident in Fullerton, California early this morning -- hours after he pitched in a game last night.

Cops say someone driving a minivan blew through a red light, causing the Mitsubishi that Adenhart was riding in to hit a light pole. Three people were killed in the crash, including Nick.

Cops say the person driving the van fled the scene -- but was later caught and charged with felony hit-and-run. The suspect is currently being treated for injuries in a local hospital.

We're told one of the other men killed in the crash was also affiliated with the Angels organization.

Nick was 22-years-old.

sad thing is, if either Lackey or Santana don't get hurt / go on DL, this kid would probably be alive. (he wouldn't have pitched last night / wouldn't have been on that road at that time, etc).

I find that (albeit morbidly) interesting.

6 scoreless innings pitched, 0.00 era, 5 strikeouts...

He was on his way to being a household name. This is terrible.

R.I.P.

Heck, if the lead didn't get blown the game would have ended earlier and he wouldn't have been where he was at that time and would have avoided that accident.

Always a shame when a talented person dies young.

He looked like he was going to be a pretty good pitcher.

RIP

Christ, it gets worse: he was an only child. (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/baseball/mlb/04/09/adenhart.killed/index.html?cnn=yes)

Adenhart is survived by his father, Jim, and mother, Janet, the Angels' statement said.

The driver is done:

The minivan's driver fled the scene and was later arrested, Brower said. Andrew Thomas Gallo, 22, of Riverside will face charges of manslaughter, felony driving under the influence and hit-and-run, he said.

So sad. This is why I'm having all those morbid thoughts lately.

I think the problem is there's been nothing but bad news lately. Everywhere you go, it's nothing but darkness.

I think we need to rectify that, and bring the good to the top. I haven't seen a swarm of bad news like this since 9/11.

What makes it worse is that the Washington Post had a quote from Joba in their story without mention of Joba's DUI.

I mean, seriously - you'd think they'd talk to a Yankee player THAT ACTUALLY PLAYED WITH HIM.

i fucking hate that shit

i know theres prob no way to make someone not drive when they have a suspended license, short of placing a bracelet or something they cant take off that somehow knows theyre in the drivers seat and doesnt allow the engine to start

sad story

sad story

When someones license is suspended, their car should be impounded for duration of the suspension. The person license, when scanned, should have a red flag on it. That way, if they try to rent a car, they cant. There has to be a crack down on this shit. People get off too lightly sometimes. Id even hold the bar or the person who let the asshole leave drunk and drive responsible. Maybe even a sign in bars that states "if you have X amount of drinks, you surrender your car keys automaticlly until when you can pick them up the next day."

Absolutely impossible. There is no way you can keep someone with no inhibitions from driving if they want to. They will lie. They will carry extra keys. ANYTHING. That's why it pisses me off (in most cases) when servers are held responsible for the actions of patrons. Sure... There are cases when they serve when they know they shouldn't. But in most cases, there is no way for them to control what happens when someone leaves the bar. Life can't be regulated to that extreme, and people need to realize that.

Reggie Willits just got called up to fill the vacant roster spot... not in a way that any player wants to make a big league roster.

Well, this explains why the driver pleaded Not Guilty yesterday...

Tox reports say that the driver of Nick's car (who was under 21) had a BAC of .16.
