View Full Version : Texting at Work?

Now that texting has become an almost universal commonplace part of todays culture how is it viewed in the workplace. I am self employed with 4 employees all women who are inclined to use their cell phones to text during the workday. Being a small office we don't have a spelled out policy about such things, similar to personal calls where it is expected that they be kept to a minimum and as needed. But texting seems to be viewed as not as much personal time as a phone call. It has not become an issue to the work getting done but I can see it creeping towards that level
So my question is to those in a corporate environment is Is there a policy in place at work about texting during the work day?

feedback appreciated.

Proactively: yes I recognize that i do an abundance of posting here during the work day but my name is on the door and the bottom of the paychecks

<font color="deeppink"> it should be a policy that there is no texting....the youth today especially dont understand the line...they dont dress up and chew gum during an interview, but thats how they are these days...

i text at work but i do it alone so no one sees....yea im disrespectful but at least i have the decency to hide while i do it...or do it while im alone at work....enacting a policy is teaching them to at least learn how to be discreet which is a lesson they need to learn anyways

i cant resist good text....i just cant

I think if its so common that you notice it, then its too much. A quick text when no one is looking isn't a problem, but a full fledged conversation is as disruptive to work as a personal phone call.

I always wondered how you actually do that in your line of work... do you have that much time between patients?

He's in Bellevue and he writes his name in shit on the door. Unimpressed.

well, as for the other employees in your office, if the texts interfere with your and their work, or it even delays your ability to see patients in a timely manner then I would say something, though if it is done in otherwise non active down time then it really should not bother you...

At my job there is a "no cellphones" policy. Since my boss texts his wife practically all day, he doesn't bother me much about texting (which I don't really do too much if at all). He just asks that I do it out of sight of the store managers. If I need to make a quick call I'll duck into the cooler. When he's not there and I'm in charge I ask the same thing of my employees.

My business as an orthodontist tend towards waves of half a dozen patients in 10-15 minute blocks busyest from 3-5 after school time. We put braces on or remove them first thing in the morning and right after lunch. Alot of the work is time management of the flow in and out The middle of my day tends to be light no matter how we try to schedule patients , a nice long lunch where I listen to the show live first half, then recorded second half on the way home.

Along that line, texting should roll up into a general "cell phone" policy if you have one.

Ugh, beitdont, I literally almost threw up when I saw that picture. Gross.

I don't know if we have an official policy but having my boss see me is enough to deter me. I leave my phone in my purse on vibrate and check it occasionaly during the day. If I need to make a call I walk down the hall or outside. I've never gotten into texting, probably b/c I don't have a key pad and it's a bitch to text with number buttons. Either way I don't think they should be OK with doing it in front of you.

well I text more than talk on the phone, but while at work, the few people I do text with know that I reach them from my gmail account and they can reply to it.... that way texting is free for me.

I don't really get too many texts and calls anyway.

A few efficient text during the day can be less of a distraction than phonecalls.

Don't forget milk and dog food.

The boys have baseball tonight.

Don't wait up. I'm going to Dr. Joes for a threesome.

It's also a good way to see if your significant other has some amorous thoughts for the evening.

Yeah, I'm glad they still have a good sex life, but please leave me out of it. I can't get images out of my head sometimes.

Thankfully I don't think they know how to use the camera function. They just figured out texting.

I keep my AIM on at work because im at a desk all day doing stuff on the computer anyway. I put the main people i receive texts from during the day on my AIM buddy list so the text goes right to the computer im working at.

If it's like my mom that texts i just pick up the phone and text back, the office i work at everyone is so transient that it isn't an issue at all.

I try to keep my texting at work to a minimum. When/if I do text, I'm very discreet about it. It's not interfered with anything, nor has it become an issue as far as I know.

I alternate between keeping my phone on my desk or in my purse in my draw. I always keep it on silent/vibrate mode.

It's hard enough posting because my computer is in a highly visible area and some people will just sit there, eating their chips and stare at me and it's annoying.. go away and text someone please!

I was spoken to at work about getting texts there, because the alerts were distracting my co workers. I set it on vibrate and will only text on the DL. I can see how it keeps even me from being productive and and I do not text anywhere near what I see these young people text. I think its a good idea to set the policy now Joe.

My text alert is a nice, loud 'whoohaaaa'. People love it and if they ask, I just say I love Scent of a Woman.

If I'm working out in the field it doesn't matter. In the control office it isn't allowed, and also cell phone use has to be taken outside the office as to not distract the dispatchers. You can use the office phone almost all day though (its recorded so that kinda keeps the chatting to a minimum.)

In my personnal office its whatever.
