View Full Version : Best Cartoons By Decades (aka Bennington Is Wrong -- The Simpsons Is A '90's Show)

Today on the show, the boys talked about the best cartoons for each decade. Looney Tunes got the '40's and '50s, Blowhard gave Top Cat the 60's, Pepper liked Superfriends in the '70s, ESD gave the '80s to Simpsons and '90s to South Park.

What do you think?

ESD gave the '80s to Simpsons and '90s to South Park.

The Simpsons was in the 80s for what, 2 years? Shouldn't that be more 90s?

I agree. But on the show, the boys and the callers talked about Simpsons in terms of the '80s. ESD did say that the Simpsons best stuff was from 1991-1996.

In retrospect, he may not have given the '80's to Simpsons. He may have went for GI Joe.

Taking NOTHING away from the Simpsons because I think they set the bar for popular cartoons for the 90s, and still do. But Ren & Stimpy pushed the limits in the early 90s also, at least the first two seasons, especially considering it was a kids cartoon, and maybe that was part of it's demise (and a lot of personality problems with Kricfalusi and crew and Nickelodeon management).

Many of todays kids cartoons mimic the style and even content of Ren & Stimpy (but a very bad imitation)... and yes Ren & Stimpy took cues from Warner Bros and others, but turned it into something new... unlike what you find on TV today

i def give

00s to South Park
90s to Simpsons

because even though they started the decade before, their best works were in that decade

i don't know 60s, 70s and 80s because i don't want to vote for any kiddie stuff. I'm thinking the 60s has to go to "Rocky & Bullwinkle", but i can't think of any cartoons from the 70s or 80s that would interest me as an adult. If i could pick movies, then i'd give "Heavy Metal" the the 80s cuz that was awesome and maybe "Fritz the Cat" to the 70s cuz i did like the movie but i don't like how R. Crumb hated the movie and he created the character.

It baffle me how anyone can call the Simpsons an 80's cartoon. They were barely on in the 80's and the best stuff was the 90's. Same thing goes with South Park, all the best South Park stuff has been this decade, even though it began in the 90's.

80's -- too tough, but i'm going to say Duck Tales. Transformers, Gummi Bears and the Smurfs were also cool.
90's -- Space Ghost -- led to a whole genre of the adult swim cartoons, the biggest and best of the recycled cartoons
00's -- Futurama -- better than the Simpsons episodes of the time period

I have to diqualify the simpsons because they were 80's (a couple of years on Tracy Ullman before their own show remember) 90's and 00's. They trounce anything from that time period, they trounce any cartoon from any time period and they may even trounce any show period from any time period...

Ron's logic is bullshit. The question was presented "Which cartoon owns the decade?"

Pink Floyd formed in the 60s. Well, they weren't really known so they were a 70s band. Why? Becuase it doesn't fit into my argument the other way.

Also, Daves argument was the opposite of Rons but he presented it like he was totally agreeing with him. Dave said its when the person "makes their mark."

yeah..i think they had shorts from "The Tracy Ullman Show" for a few years before that, but they sucked. To tell you the truth, atleast the first 2 seasons of "The Simpsons" wasn't really "The Simpsons" as we know it. Animated shows, in general, seem to take a longer time to find their voice. The first season of any long running animated series is usually so different and weird, a lot of times their voices don't even sound the same

I say "The Simpsons" is definitley a 90s cartoon. "Do the Bartman" was released on Nov 20th, 1990 and that is the moment that defined "Bart-amania"

for maybe the first time, I disagree with Ronnie B.

the Rocky and Bullwinkle show was kinda a variety show-
you not only saw them, but also Fractured Fairy Tales, Dudley-Do-Right, Mr. Peobody, Aesop & Son, Bullwinkle as "mr know it all", and even Commander McBragg.

I see this as 1 entry, since it was all in one show.

and it was way better than the Flintstones in 60s.

00s - not too sure.

The Jetsons original 24 episodes were not done during the 70's - they were produced from 1962-1963, as a followup to the hugely successful series The Flintstones (which was the first prime-time animated series, written to be enjoyed on an adult level as well as for children, and based on the model of The Honeymooners).

The Jetsons also originally aired in prime-time for adults (on Sunday nights), and were the futuristic counterpoint to the stone age Flintstones. A second run of (vastly inferior) Jetsons episodes were also produced in the 1980's; truly aimed at kids and constrained by political correctness.

Definitely agreed. Dave was using the Simpsons 80s years as a technicality because the 80s stunk cartoon wise before them. Although getting up on Saturday Mornings and watching all that garbage was sadly one of the biggest weekly highlights during my childhood. I've tried to watch it again over the years but it truly was trash. Anyway, putting Simpsons in the 80s, let's you put something else in 90s but I'd argue South Park's best stuff was after 99. Then I'd argue Family Guy and American Dad are pretty hacky and not that good.

Using Dave's trick I'd go this way:

American Dad is a really well written show. You might think the characters are a ripoff, but it's not a rip off show. It's done differently, and the jokes are put together well, rather then just being zany gags out of nowhere.

I was just watching Rocky and Bullwinkle on WGN, although for some reason they were calling it Bullwinkle and Rocky. Phenominal. I think what we really miss is the fact that those characters all represented people in that time period. Kinda like Wizzard of Oz, people watch it now and enjoy it, but have no clue about William Jennings Bryant and all that stuff...

edit: and I don't particularly care for Family Guy or American Dad. I liked Family Guy before they brought it back but since I don't know. It's just an excuse to make fun of moments from movies and other TV shows. Not a whole lot of plot to be found.
