I was a registered Republican up until the 2006 Election cycle when they got their asses thrown out of congress. I have seen the party become fiscally irresponsible and being a mouthpiece to the religious right. As I have gotten older I have become a libertarian. In 2008 I voted for Barr. There are a lot of people I know who have had it with the GOP but are also not happy with the Dems. I consider myself a conservative on issues like fiscal responsibility, economics, immigration, but not a religious fanatic. I dont think that the Government is in a conspiracy to set up FEMA camps or anything like that.

However government has gotten too big, It was Bush who actually expanded a lot of the federal government as he was far from bing fiscally conservative. The stimulus is just going to be another bubble and burst in my opinion. The Federal reserve has no accountability and should be audited. There are a lot of former Republicans like me who believe Ron Paul was right on everything. I admit that the GOP has become a failure and there are no leaders. Steele is a figurehead, Palin wont go away, Cantor and Boehner are just distractions. People like Glenn Beck are insane (But his show is entertaining) I know 2012 is a long time away, Ron Paul will be in his late 70s, he probably wont be in the election

I was never a registered Republican, but I was always pretty fiscally conservative. I wanted Bush over Gore in 2000, and I was all for whatever Bush was doing after 9/11. But the more and more the religious right got pushed into the republican party, the further away I keep moving.

And after the disaster of the last few years, I would have been happy with ANYONE but Bush in power. My viewpoints have started to skew a little more liberal, just because anyone arguing for the side of the right just seems so crazy to me at this point. Why continue supporting these people? And with the worst arguments ever, too.

I'm sick of watching Southern leadership in the GOP destroy the party due to their alliance with Bible-thumping morons. Gone are the Northeastern moderate Republicans (with the exception of Senators Snowe and Collins of Maine). The hallmarks of the GOP, such as fiscal conservatism and small government, have been tossed aside due to paranoia over potential terrorism. The party is bereft of any leadership or vision.

I would have loved voting Libertarian in the last election. But Bob Barr is a fucking douche.

I consider myself a modern (progressive) conservative. Take all the original principles such as state's rights, fiscal conservatism, etc. remove this modern notion of god run politics, and add back in free choice and you have me.

Bush made me want to move to Canada, then I realized I'd of been just as embarrassed there.

I have seen the party become fiscally irresponsible and being a mouthpiece to the religious right.

And that in a nutshell, are the same reasons I left the GOP as well.

I am a former Republican, I changed to an independent after I voted for Ron Paul in the primary. The GOP seemed like a good idea years ago, but then the Iraq War started to make me think they seem to lie a little bit, and then Hurricane Katrina happened, and the GOP started blaming poor people and local government workers for the hurricane instead of busting ass on rescuing people, and I came to my senses that the GOP frankly hates it when government does anything, let alone its primary responsibility of protecting the life and welfare of its citizens during a catastrophe. All the GOP believes in is war is good, especially when war isn't formally declared because it's even better to deficit spend, that way they can hide their increase in the size of government with the threat of enemies, that way they can scam voters into voting for candidates who claim they wants smaller government and more free market, but really are going to vote for more war, more government, and more Christianity in your lives, but not the good kind, the bad evil Evangelical kind that bans abortion and wants prayer in every school.

I'll just preface this by saying that when I filled out my first voter registration card in civics class my senior year of high school, I wrote "Democrat" in the Party Affiliation square and have never changed it.

But I'd love for the Republican Party to become a principled party with real ideas and a real platform, instead of this hate-mongering monstrosity it's become. I honestly think that the Republican Party has driven away so many voters who aren't Bible-thumping rednecks that we're going to have pretty much one-party rule for at least the next 8 years. Shit, I'm expecting the Democrats to pass that magic 60 in the Senate mark in 2010 (I think that Kentucky's seat will be flipping parties, for example), meaning Democratic initiatives will have pretty much a free run through Congress.

Now, as a Democrat, this doesn't displease me in a lot of ways -- but in other ways, it does. This is supposed to be a two-party system. But that means two parties that have different ideas and can work together. Not this bullshit where one party is just all about constantly bitching about the other.

So it's time for the Republican party to get its shit together -- or die and be replaced by a new party. Either way is cool with me.

Funnily enough our gov has been gradually reducing our taxes over the last 3 years.. I have noticeably been paying less and less each year on my income tax.

then again, our PC (Progressive Conservatives) are probably more liberal than the US Liberals.. our Liberals.. thats another story

Ron Paul was not the crackpot every one thought he was. Hes right about the Federal Reserve creating these bubbles and bursts. He also wants the Fed to be audited

He wasnt hawking any of the tea parties, hes just using logic and common sense

registerd republican primarily to participate in the primarys. voted for barr as there was little difference in front runners policy, cldnt bare to put mccain in to suley the republican name any further.
was not fond of all the spending bush did, or most of his "bipartisin" policy.
bush was relected because no one wins 3 true purple hearts in 4 months and still retains all of his limbs.
for the longest time ive believed that factions of both major parties have been making a concerted effort to break the republic. thru oppresive legislation , ohnerous goverment, cripling taxes, in order to gain the oppotunity to rewrite the constituition taking the power away from the people.
frustrated .

You summed it up pretty well for me. I'm sick of gov't being involved in every last thing you do on a daily basis.

I hate Democrats and Republicans. I've been checking out the Libertarians and I agree with just about all of their stances. I wish more people would join them.

I'm not done yet...my views still line up with what I believe to be the core values of the Republican Party.

I had this long-winded post about how a few self titled "ex-republican"(s) have let the party define them rather than them defining the party. Then I remembered I'm on a message board and nothing I say/do is going to change anyones mind, so I deleted the entire thing. I myself have noticed I've become much more socially "liberal" but I still most closely associate with the right.

A lot of that has to do with me being conservative in California and seeing how that translates to the east coast.

From looking at both parties I'm still on the right side of the political spectrum...so my rant is worthless. I'm not an EX-REPUBLICAN....yet.

Revive the Populist Party. It's a bizarre hybrid of libertarian and socialism, almost communism -- it places the power of the people over both government and corporation

Here's a video which elaborates on why I'm not a Republican... because the party is clearly insane.

I'm a registered independent who has never voted for a republican in a presidential election. Most of my opinions have been stated above;hijacked by fundamentalists,no fiscal responsibility, etc.I would vote for a smaller government, balanced budget, less waste, fiscally conservative, more personal freedom,Barry Goldwater republican in 2012.Unfortunately there is no such thing anymore.

The republican party has been bastardized into something it was never intended to be.The only things that they are really good at are propaganda and blame shifting.

Examples:Convincing voters that Kerry's military record was a fraud while Bush dodged the draft.

Convincing voters to vote for tax breaks for people who are six tax brackets above them.

Claiming to want less govt. while increasing the size of govt. more than any president in history.

Harping on second ammendment rights while destroying the first ammendment.

Running on hot botton topics such as eliminating abortion(which would in fact be taking away a right)while doing absolutely nothing to change the laws when in office.

I could go on but I assume I have lost most of you by now.

im not sure its been hijacked by fundamentalist's . more people saying they are. embryonic stem cell for instance- as i understand, there was never a ban on the research. there was however a ban on federal funding(which is notoriously a black whole anyways) is true.....

tanless1

the goverment is not the answer(funding) to all problems ( research). allthough i do believe the republican party has been hijacked . blaming the fundy's fits the leftist bigger atheist agenda however is why the half-truths get hammerd to hard.
dont get me wrong, see my previos post, both parties are working in concert.
however i do believe both parties have been hijacked.

I was Republican until they screwed up everything about the Iraq war, advertising their every move on CNN. Although I havent completely switched sides yet, Obama dropping the hammer on those pirates like he did is what this country needed. I feel if the Republicans were still in office they would have found a way to fuck that up too.
