It's fair to say that I may not purposefully father a child anytime in the near future.

So, while I am not dumping loads on the toilet seats in women public restrooms in an effort to spread my seed (how long until I get caught?), I am looking for a reputable dog breeder.

I am planning on getting a golden retriever puppy. However, there are only a couple breeders nearby me. If you know of any breeders, please let me know.

why not get a mutt puppy who needs a home from a no kill shelter...
they are the sweetest and normally healthier than pure breeds.
just a suggestion.

An idea I have been working with for quite some time. But all the rescue shelters here seem to have an abundance of pit bulls and terriers or a really small breed. I need to keep in mind that any dog I get, it will always be around small children and other dogs and I need to be fully aware of its temperament and history.

I understand adopting a breed that is family/child friendly but my opinion is that maybe you should invest some more time in looking around at shelters.

I can understand wanting a pure breed but have you also calculated how much they will cost in the long run due to high risk health problems? (You might not want to be paying $500 vet bills when you are expecting or raising a small child).

Either way you'll have to pay out, that's obvious but maybe check out someone online adoption agencies, search a little further out from your area. I would really love to see more shelter dogs find forever homes but that's just me.

Here are some sites i found:

I have Black Lab/Goldie mix and he's fat as a hippo, but a great dog.

My other dog looks like a wolf and I think he is a shepard/husky cross and also a great dog.

Pure breads have health issues.

I can't imagine how awesome a lab/blue heeler would be. If I didn't have two huge dogs already, I seriously would go get that dog.

Edit: btw. My wolf looking dog I found abandoned in a ditch with his two sisters. I found homes for the girls. They were about 3 months old. Best dog I have ever had.

I don't know the name of the show on Animal Planet, it migth just be Dogs and Cats but they have episodes dedicated to like 5 different breeds.

Anyway i watched one that teh NFL dogs were on and the family had like 8 of them, lived in a house by a lake and used them as training dogs for lifeguards and trained them for lifesaving courses in the lakes that surrounded their house.

It was pretty interesting to see how much weight they can pull and sustain in the water.

Just to clarify - I have submitted adoption papers to 6 or 7 rescue agencies in both PA and OH.

Of those, 5 told me that they will not adopt out of state. Their reason all the same, should something not work out, the dog would be too far away for them to come to its aid.

The other two were adopted to someone else already.

So, I am attempting to get a rescue/shelter dog but, it isn't coming along as nicely as I would like.

from what my friend posted these people are accepting adoption from people out of state... she listed a few (OH/KY/PA/WV/IN)

It's worth a shot... I mean they are incredibly cute and if I was not so allergic to dogs and had more time on my hands I would get one in a heartbeat.

Nope, that's why I say that he does not live MY reality.
These "dreams" you speak of all sound very much like a dream my father would have...
Even though I did not plan to have my kid just exactly when I did; I always dreamed of one day being a mother and having a happy and healthy child.
Seeing my kid as happy as can be and funny, creative and smart in addition to all of it has exceeded any dream I had in that regard...

I don't care for a mansion, I am fine in the space I have and would be fine in a smaller space as well...
Prince Charming was never in my dreams, as a matter of fact I never even dreamed of being married growing up...
The lottery? Please... do math much? What are the odds? What a silly dream to have and chase after...
Perfect Career... hmm, what IS the perfect career? I am actually happy with the way mine has gone and how I have moved from one field into another and gotten a chance to challenge myself, learn new stuff and never stand still... sounds better than "the perfect career" that becomes the same old every day quickly...

Having no bills... sounds nice... but again, that was never a dream of mine either, cause I gladly pay for things and their worth.

Now one of my dreams is to one day own a puppy...
well, maybe if I can beat these damn allergies ... then that will come true too.

Aren't puppies cute!!???

Now that all that is over... back to me...

I met the pregnant bitch (it's ok to say that because the simpsons told me so).

The breeder is in Appleton, NY (about 45 minutes from Buffalo) and the dogs are a mix between american golden retrievers and english.

Small drawback - they are bred as block heads. All are AKC dogs but with no intention of agility in my future, I think that my efforts will not be focused on this upcoming litter.

Great breeders, great (amazing) dogs, fantastic facilities but, not a fit for me.

I shall continue the searching.

Hope you find a good pup soon! I am a big fan of boxers and bulldogs. I have one boxer now and they are great with kids, hell they think they are one! Next dog will probably be a rescue though since there are so many available.

Must it be a puppy?
A friend of mine is fostering a black lab right now who needs a home. I think she's a little over 4 years old. She was a Katrina victim, adopted by an older couple, but I guess there were some health problems so they could no longer care for her. She is sweet as can be.

At any rate, please please please continue looking at your local shelters; have you tried leaving them your contact info so that they can call you should a dog that might fit your desires comes in? sure there may be a preponderance of pitbull types, but shelters most certainly get other dogs in. Also, as you're looking for a puppy and seem like a responsible type, there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't consider a pit-type dog (here I go opening that can of worms).

I'm in Ithaca so a little far away but I would do anything to help you find a shelter or rescue dog - There's a pretty big network of people here at the vet school that I can reach out to on your behalf if you want - please please please please please please please don't buy one from a breeder! Please!

Golden Retrievers are the best family dogs I've ever owned and I would recommend a reputable breeder since hip dysplasia is too common among the breed now (don't know of any in your area).

While I will probably get another Golden when Luke passes, I am tempted to look into getting a Golden Doodle (Golden Retriever and Poodle mix). They're cute as can be, the one I know of has the "family" dog characteristic, it does not shed (Golden's seem to lose a pound of hair every day), and they are hypoallergenic.

Good luck.

Agreed. Good bloodline is an absolute must and worth the money. My cousin has a goldie that he paid 250 for and she is sweet, but her ears are always messed up, has dysplasia, allergic to grass. Her skin practically falls off in the summer. It is really sad cuz the meds are very, very expensive.

I dont think I would ever own a non Pure-Bred dog.

I have owned many dogs in my youth, and my best were both purebreds, one an Italian Mastiff, and the other a Doberman.

If you want a good purebred, you might need to travel a couple hundred miles to a good breeder.

If you girls want to take care of something that drools, hair you can braid, and is pretty much house broken, I can think of a certain poster who would be perfect. :help:

And it's sad because people like your cousin are what spur these dumb breeders who don't know what they're doing to continue breeding their dogs - there's money in it. Supporting reputable breeders really just indirectly contributes to this backyard breeder problem. It SUCKS.
