Nothing is set in stone but last night Doogie and I got to talking about the possibility of organizing a Bone Marrow drive. We'd need to get a minimum of 10 people to be on board and Doogie has the ability to provide a location that could accomodate it.

I've been considering joining the registry for some time due to a story I read in the paper. I don't know anyone personally that has the need for it, but 70% of people on the list do not have matches within their own families.

If we were to try to get this together, in the NY area, would anyone be interested in participating?

Joining the registry is farely simple. You submit a cheek swab or blood sample to see if you match with anyone. This page has information regarding health conditions etc.

It's a farely big decision, but being open to the possibility is great. Even if we get just the minimum ten to donate and everyone else shows up and we can raise money or awareness I think it would be awesome.

I didnt see this thread was already posted and did some research today about the drive and found the same site ironically. Tomorrow I am going to talk to a friend of mine who works in one of the local hospitals here and get some more info. I am going to get some more information that answers more of my questions directly and I want to get this thing going. One of the places we could have it at is totally on board. Talked to one of the muckity mucks in charge and they think it is a great idea. I have some more logistical things to work on and the details of which will probably be revealed later on, but just know that we have a large community of people here and I would like to see this thing get off the ground.

Want to get tested for marrow. Cool. Even if you dont want to do the marrow part of it, Cool too. There will be other things that we are going to need help with and no extra hands will be turned aside. As we get more information we are going to post it here and I would like to start an email listing to inform people of what progress is going on in regards to this.

So give a hand and sign up for a good cause people. We have the manpower, lets get this thing off the ground.

My girlfriend registered 2 years ago when her mother was going in for a bone marrow transplant. She was not a match for her mother but she keeps herself registered for those that need for one.

All they need is swab of the inside your mouth. Most hospitals have regular drives for bone marrow donors, so even if you are not a part of this drive, you can help those who really need it.

I have been on the registry for a few years, have never been called though. It is real simple, a swab or blood work, and then keeping your info up to date so they can contact you if need be.

The big decision is whether you want to help someone when/if that call comes. It is not comfortable donating marrow which they only do if a match is found. You could be helping a child or adult of any race, creed, etc. They only take your marrow when it is needed and you have fully consented. Your marrow from the donor site will regrow because you are healthy.

There are very few things that preclude (predominantly) anyone from being a donor; such as cancer, a certain bone disease, etc.

im debating it.

i spoke to the nurse here at work. she said that it was a very generous thing to do, but the procedure would be "the most painful experience in your life, since they have to break into your bone to get it."

yeah...broken bones are not fun. i read around and they have a newer procedure where they extract it from your blood. it takes about 4 hours but i'd prefer that.

I've been considering this for a while now, since a friend of mine who is an 8-year breast cancer survivor and a 1 year leukemia survivor almost died in 2007 because she almost didn't get a donor match in time for a marrow transplant. That would've sucked more than you know. (She's got 3 kids; 2 in middle school/jr. high and 1 in high school.)

As for signing up for the marrow registry: do it. It's a cheek swab test, which is painless.

As for DONATING marrow: they don't break your bones. What used to happen is they drill into your hipbones and extract the marrow from there. Now, there's a less painful procedure. There's more information at the marrow registry website that Silera posted above. (More information at the Myths & Facts section of the Marrow Registry site: http://marrow.org/JOIN/Myths_%26_Facts_about_Marrow_Don/index.html)

Go to the FAQ section of the marrow registry site (http://marrow.org/JOIN/FAQs_about_Joining_the_Registry/index.html) for more information about donatin, eligibility requirements and the match process.

Oh, and I'm in.

And keep me posted if you need volunteers, too.

Although I am in the Philly area, I would probably be up for this - assuming it wouldn't be a problem for the medical facility. Especially if there is a sponsor that will defray part or absorb all of the tissue typing cost, I would be willing to join the effort.

This is a national registry; your location would not limit your ability to be typed and registered as a willing, active donor.

All you do is a swab test. If you get called to save someone they drill into your hip to extract the marrow. Does it hurt, yes according to people who have done it. Just remember when you are in pain you may have given a mother's child another chance at life. I am a peice of garbage but if they can dig around it and use something good to help someone...drill baby drill.

Fuck it, I'm down. When I get back from my honeymoon I'll arrange for the swab.

I volunteered 12 or 13 years ago. Do I need to re-up? I imagine I'd still be in the database. If not, I'll sign up again!
