all of my family pictures are gone.
i've been crying non stop all fucking day, and i cant stop.
if it was just vacation pix or whatever, fuck it.
but its pics of my son from baby up till now.
all
fucking
gone.
sorry to rant. i cant punch walls anymore without breaking them, and i need to just get it all out of me.
i finally went to bed at 5:30 this morning and was up at 7:30 only to call out of work.
everytime sean walks past me, i tell him i need hugs and kisses. i dont care what i have to pay, i need these pictures back. all of these great memories, especially all the candid shit,
all gone.
i've been home most of the day, just wandering around aimlessly.
its all my fault. had i just gone to bed last nite, rather than fucking with the drive, it would have been all ok.
but no.

I saw the thread this morning or yesterday and was hoping it worked out for you.No way to try a data recovery program?Send the drive out?

Mike:
a few questions.
1) did you take this drive to Best Buy to be assessed? If so, throw that assessment out the window and DON'T TRUST BEST BUY WITH SHIT. Especially with how sensitive the data is.
http://www.datarecoverynj.com/
You want to take it to a mom and pop shop who will actually care about getting you stuff back.
Trust me... drives have been tossed into fires and been SHOT and the data has been recovered, which is why I never throw away HDs. It can be recovered, you just have to find the right people to do it.
AGAIN: DON'T GO THROUGH BEST BUY OR STAPLES.
Google "Data Recovery" or "Hard drive repair".

I did. It was helpful. The 2nd post was not appropriate here. And that wasn't just for you.

Let's be honest here - Mike's data really isn't gone. There's a way to recover it. It's not like he found out he has cancer.

Hard Drive recovery how to on youtube (playlist) (http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=516A3C08A0824295)
Good luck! If not, do what Matty suggests, mom and pop computer shops.
Really sorry to hear this, brother.
Hopefully your pics can be recovered, but if not, they're just reminders.
You have your actual memories.
Best of luck.

I know it does not help the case for the currently "lost" ones, but for the future ...
personally I always upload all my pics to picasa into private albums and at the end of the year or after a special vacation I order a coffee table photobook to have because in this digital world a lot of pictures get lost in folders on pc's and never get looked at. Some sites (like mypublisher) have coupon codes for buy one get one free and I usually use it and safe the second so I can hand it down to Lukas when he grows up.
As for your current situation, take a deep breath and check into some of the suggestions made in the other thread. Just don't panic for now.
Maybe you have some kodak accounts or photobucket or others, and many pix may be out there online and not all lost either.

That sucks, but Matty is right. Most of your data can still be saved. It will be pricey, but some things are worth the price

i went to the geek squad this morning. he heard the drive singing, and said this would have to go to level 3 recovery.
i called the place matty suggested, and he explained what the problem was. the other problem is that its a hitachi drive, which are real fuckos to repair. he wont go near them.
he suggested to me a place up in secaucus that would be able to do this. he said they are the best of the best at doing this. place called ontrack recovery. it's gonna cost me a leg, liver, and my next born, but its something that i have to do. luckily, if i put $ 20 away a paycheck, i'll get to the $1800 eventually. that or i could just wait and sqiurrel away birfday, christmas, and tax return next year to pay for it.
i know it can be recovered. the heads have to be seperated, and re-aligned correctly for the drive to be read again.
im sorry if i came across as a bitch. its just the thought of all these happy memories and laughs disappearing that im having trouble dealing with.
thank you all for all your help and kind words. its nice to know that somebody out there still likes me.

Thats sucks but Tenbats has the right idea. You should be able to get your stuff back. Dont ever listen to the fucking morons at Best Buy. They are the worst.
I hope others read this and take precautions with this kind of thing. I almost lost my pictures a few years back. First thing I did when they were recovered was go out and buy an $80 80gig backup hard drive and backup all of my pictures, videos and music. Now everytime I upload new pictures I automatically copy them to the backup as well.
Its just so not worth being lazy or procrastinating when it comes to something as irreplaceable as pictures.
Oh, and for the record, a friend of mine was the one that recovered my pictures and music after the guy at Best Buy told me he could send it out but there was no way they were gonna recover it.

you did not come across as a bitch... it's not something you expect every day to happen to you and an initial panic sets in...
in reality, even if they cannot recover them ( and they likely can) those memories and laughs are in your heart... and possibly look 10 times more dazzling than the snapshot that captured it. You carry them with you at all times.

i can give a very high A+
recommendation to "Drive Savers"
my boss's pc totally crashed
last year and the local guys
could do nothing
one recommended Drive Savers
and he sent them the hard drive
they are in CA
within 4 days he had back
CD's from them with
ALL the important stuff
in perfect shape
cost $900, (he would have
paid $10,000 if that it was it took
because he had his whole life
on his pc)
here is their site:

so sorry to hear about that... i'd be devastated too, you'll be able to get it back though, just start saving up the money. how old is your son? my oldest is 4 and it's a wake up call to all of us to back up our pics. i never knew that it costs 2gs to fix, ugh... when you get it fixed maybe get one of those photobooks from shutterfly or snapfish for your favorite pics.. i got one for a christmas gift and I was really impressed, but maybe it's because I'm female and get mushy... hoping 2k finds you soon..
....

Getting the backup hard drive is a good first step but they can crash too. Just about everyone has a cd or dvd burner on their computer now and the media is cheap. When you transfer them from your camera, store them in a few different places (computer, external drive, sd card etc ) and when you get enough, burn a couple of cds and store one in a seperate location, and when you get a few cds burned, burn a couple of dvds and do the same thing.
