US medical authorities expressed strong concern Friday about an unprecedented multi-strain swine flu outbreak that has killed at least 60 people in Mexico and infected seven people in the United States.

"It's very obvious that we are very concerned. We've stood up emergency operation centers," Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) spokesman Dave Daigle told AFP.

One major source of concern was that the virus included strains from different types of flu.

"This is the first time that we've seen an avian strain, two swine strains and a human strain," said Daigle, adding that the virus had influenza strains from European and Asian swine, but not from North American swine. He may want to release his swine flu on all Mexicans. I think he hates them, cause the neighbors lawn guys tease him and make kissy faces at him and so he chases them.

Bird, human, and pig all in one?

I've been talking for a while now about possible ways to reduce the human population and now we have some crazy sci fi sickness wreaking havoc with only more death to come.

At least 16 dead already.

Much like how blacks were given syphilis decades ago as part of a secret government experiment..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuskegee_Study_of_Untreated_Syphilis_in_the_Negro_ Male

..this flu outbreak could easily be the same thing, except on a much grander scale. Seeing how it's already international shows that it's larger than any one country and it's leadership, global control is starting to tighten.

From what I am reading, this seems like a modified virus which makes me very nervous. Considering the lengths that the Mexican government is going through to contain this is extraordinary. Now its in the US though. I suspect this will spread swiftly along the southwest and into CA, then eastward. This could be a pandemic and I bet this will be on everyones news within a few days.

They said on michael Savage (not the most reliable source, I know) that they suspect 10 cases already in NYC in High Schoolers that went there on a school trip. I dunno if I believe it though.

This is spreading rapidly, 8 cases already in NYC. (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30398682/)

Worries that the new swine flu strain that has killed as many as 68 people and sickened more than 1,000 across Mexico has “pandemic potential” increased with the announcement that the virus had spread to Kansas, and likely to New York City.

On Saturday, two new cases of swine flu were confirmed in Kansas. And New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Frieden announced that tests showed that eight New York schoolchildren had a type A influenza virus that was likely the swine flu.

Samples have been sent to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for further testing for confirmation. The students showed mild flu symptoms.

Swine flu 'debacle' of 1976

"The government wanted everyone to get vaccinated," Ward said. "But the epidemic never really broke out. It was a threat that never materialized."
The swine flu brush of 1976 -- some call it a debacle -- holds crucial lessons for the government and health officials who must decide how to react to the new swine flu threat in the days and weeks ahead, said those involved in the 1976 experience.

The last flu pandemic killed 2.5%. This so far has about a 6% mortality rate. But people have only been killed in Mexico. People in poorer nations have weaker immune systems in general and less access to medical care. Nobody had died here yet which is encouraging. However the strain could still mutate to become more dangerous. And even if it doesn't it's a virus that no one has any antibodies for.

So far I havn't heard of any negro people getting the virus? Nor any asians or whites getting any serious symptoms like the hispanics. This does look very suspicious indeed :-/

After meeting with Mr. Obama, Sen. Collins expressed concern about a number of spending provisions, including $780 million for pandemic-flu preparedness. "I have no doubt that the president is willing to negotiate in good faith, that he wants to have a bipartisan bill," Sen. Collins said.

Good Morning!

By now, most of you are aware of the of the potential for a major flu outbreak in New York State. The local county departments of health as well as the New York State Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control are keeping a close eye on the situation. At this point there are no reported cases in the Capital District area. The news media is doing a fine job of reporting the situation and I am one of those who are connected to the CDC alert system so we will continue to give you up-dates as well.

If you wish to do your own monitoring of the situation you may access the information that CDC has released to the public at:

http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/?s_cid=swineFlu_outbreak_internal_001

I know that you have heard all this before but below you will find some reminders of how to do your part in protecting your health.

1 Avoid close contact.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

2 Stay home when you are sick.

If you have a fever, stay home from work, school, and/or errands. You will help prevent others including your co-workers from contracting your illness. Infected people may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 7 or more days after becoming sick. That means that you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick.. Please understand that to protect the college community if you miss work due to flu-like symptoms you will be required to produce a note from your physician and return through the College Health Service regardless of the number of work days you have missed.

3 Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing and immediately dispose of the tissue in a waste container. Then wash your hands immediately. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.

4 Clean your hands often.

Frequently washing your hands or using hand sanitizer will help protect you from germs.

5 Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

6 Practice other good health habits.

Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

Thanks for your time and attention to this matter.

RELEASE: April 26, 2009

New Jersey Increases Surveillance for Swine Influenza

In response to a swine flu virus that has caused illness in individuals in five states and Mexico, the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) has increased its statewide surveillance of influenza activity.

To date, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed cases of swine influenza A (H1N1) in 20 individuals in New York, California, Texas, Ohio and Kansas. In addition, hundreds of cases have been reported in Mexico.

No cases have been reported in New Jersey.

“In light of the recent number of confirmed swine flu cases around the country, the Department has enhanced our monitoring of influenza-like illness throughout New Jersey,” said New Jersey Health and Senior Services Commissioner Heather Howard “We have asked New Jersey’s healthcare providers to continue to be on the lookout for influenza cases or outbreaks. We have been in constant contact with our local health departments and hospitals and will continue to do so.”

In the United States, illness has been relatively mild so far compared to the severe illness reported in Mexico. New Jersey residents should stay informed as well as take precautions to prevent from getting ill.

“It’s understandable that the general public may be concerned,” said Commissioner Howard. “New Jersey has plans in place to respond in the event of a more widespread outbreak. We are in close contact with the CDC and will continue to advise our residents if additional steps are necessary beyond the usual precautions people should take to avoid becoming ill during regular flu season.”

Commissioner Howard reminds everyone to take these precautions:

· Cover coughs and sneezes with tissues and dispose of them properly.

· Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

· Stay home if you are sick.

· See your physician if illness continues.

The symptoms of swine flu are similar to seasonal flu and include fever, lack of appetite, coughing and fatigue. Some people have also reported having a sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

You cannot get swine flu from eating pork or pork product. There are no special recommendations for anyone who owns a pig or is routinely exposed to pigs.

For more information about swine flu, visit www.cdc.gov/swineflu or www.nj.gov/health.

wouldn't it be ironic
if obama is the carrier
who brought this virus
to the USA!!

ironic?

or his Al Qaida plan all along!!

If the cases were in Washington DC, that could be answer, but I don't remember Obama visting school children in texas and NYC right afterwards.

Its pretty simple: If you think you have the flu, stay home and see your primary care physician asap.

If you don't hear something from the CDC about the swine flu (http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/), take it with a grain of salt. As there are only 40 confirmed laboratory cases of the swine flu right now as of the CDC...which is different that news agencies and Lord Jezo's message boards are reporting. It appears the Tamiflu is doing the job at the moment.

Trust me when I tell you that the health care system in America seems to be prepared for whatever strain this is.

I've only heard that people should stay home if they feel sick, which is what people oughta be doing in the first place. I hate the fucking people who feel the need to impress the boss by coming into work everyday, regardless if they are coughing green and brown shit up and talk like Froggie whenever they speak.

It's like, oh, now that the CDC and Bloomberg told me so, I better start washing my hands after I take my morning and afternoon dumps.

Which is a bad thing. The stronger and healthier your immunine system the more likely you are to get it.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/health/article6182047.ece

It remains unclear why the virus has killed so many young, healthy adults — a concern because this is characteristic of pandemic strains. One possibility is that the virus triggers a massive immune reaction called a cytokine storm, which is worse in fit people with a strong immune system.

Q: Is swine flu treatable?

A: Yes, with the flu drugs Tamiflu or Relenza, but not with two older flu medications.

Q: Is there enough?

A: Yes. The federal government has stockpiled enough of the drugs to treat 50 million people, and many states have additional stocks. As a precaution, the CDC has shipped a quarter of that supply to the states to keep on hand just in case the virus starts spreading more than it has so far.

I'm going to fry some bacon to celebrate.

Nifty interactive infections map:

Tracking Swine Flu (http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/04/27/us/20090427-flu-update-graphic.html) (28 April 2009, NY Times online; FREE, you may need to sign up)

The map contains news-stories, links to WHO concerns and CDC concerns as well as 2 sets of numbers - CONFIRMED (i.e. - lab tests prove that the case is H1N1 swine influenza) and SUSPECTED (i.e. - medical professionals think that the case could be H1N1 swine influenza, but they're waiting for test results) ... this is an important distinction to make because of how crazy people get whenever the word "pandemic" is used. So far, it seems to be contained.

Also, here's a roundup of more articles about the swine flu, the difference between an "outbreak" and an "epidemic" and lots of other tidbits floating out in news-space:

Counter intelligence is already spinning it that it poses no human risk, but come on, who would believe that?

After consulting virus specialists, the police decided to stop the St. Gallen to Geneva train before it entered the station in Lausanne.

Sure, no danger to anyone, but lets just go ahead and stop it as we run our black ops clean up.

The attacks that are taking place are obvious. This is only the first salvo in the upcoming war for population reduction. Now that they see how effective this virus is there is no stopping them. Don't be surprised if planes carrying the virus start exploding over populated areas.

Now that the very top officials of the American government are telling people to stay away from others in close places there can only be doom ahead for us all.

Just because you guys all hang out with ultra libs at all times doesn't mean there is a real conservative scare going around right now. We're all being targeted but half of us don't care since Obama is the one they all see in charge.

Considering that less than one tenth of 1% of people in Mexico got the flu, it's safe to say you're going to be fine.

These past weeks have just been embarrassingly awful the way the press hyped this "swine flu". I'm not into the idea of forced flu vaccines. It seems that in America we don't build up tolerances all that well. So when the flu hits, we feel awful. Maybe we should stop using all the anti-bacterial soap and get a little bit dirty. Build our immune systems.

I do think some vaccines are definately needed. But for the flu? I think I'll pass for the time being.

As our resources dwindle we should screen babies for all types of drains on society, e.g. propensity for violence, obesity, idiocy. Maybe ship them to the pacific islands with the starving dogs. Those that survive will be Spartan warriors.

That's what the liberals have in mind for our future.

I kind of agree with you. Unless absolutely necessary I don't want anything going into my body via needle.

So evasive little Jezo. Tell me what your co-workers are talking about tomorrow; conservatives burned on the stake, religion being banned, taxes used to support a world government, liberals eating babies to feed their blood lust, FEMA herding up the rich.

Sure thing. Could start a "What is the public talking about" thread. Would give you a glimpse into what the real people of America are talking about since your world is blinded by the liberal media that cares only about where Obama gets his burgers.

Doesn't really work that way, the flu vaccination isn't necessarily for someone like us but for kids and the elderly. You build up a herd immunity and prevent those with weak/ineffective immune systems from dying to the flu. Sure, we can all deal with the flu just fine but we still run the risk of spreading it unless we're vaccinated basically.

And what studies have you done to determine that the people you talk to, who cannot amount to more than 1% of 1% of the total population of the United States reflects what "real people of America" are talking about?

Plus, it's a real ironic comment for a gimmick character to lecture about what "real people" are talking about.

One of the largest problems with American health is our resistance to prevention. I don't see us "forcing flu vaccines", however we need to increase access and education about health and how to use the health care system.

And for the record, I've gotten the flu shot for years and it has no negative effects on my health.

I don't rely on Corporate Media, what you stupidly refer to as Liberal Media. Explain to me how some of the largest corporations in the world have liberal ideals?
GE, 10th largest corporation in the world, parent of "Liberal" NBC, has a long history of air and water pollution, also produces jet fighter engines.
Please reconcile this with a "liberal" agenda?
What you have confused is a "profit" agenda and a "liberal" agenda. Appearing to have a socially progressive attitude is more profitable for media corporations. But, they are not liberal.

Hope this helps, but you will simply reply with links to lunatic sites or more comments about what is said around the neo-con water cooler.

Our resistance to prevention is pretty low compared to other countries. India, for instance, who has families that refuse to give their children the polio vaccine.

Education is always a good thing, no matter what. People should be informed. People should know what's going on.

My mom had to get the flu shot because the state of New Jersey made it mandatory for pre-school teachers. She got it and there were no ill-effects. Just speaking for myself, though, I don't want to take something if it isn't absolutely neccessary.

I think you're misunderstanding what the flu is compared to a bad cold.

Many people think they've got the flu when in fact they've just got a bad cold.

And don't you have MS? I thought flu vaccines were strongly recommended for anyone with a compromised immune system - kids, seniors, asthmatics, transplant recipients, etc. - to reduce the numbers of people flocking to the ER with flu symptoms.

I have asthma and seasonal allergies. The asthma puts me among the "strongly encouraged" group.

My office also has a very strictly enforced sick-day policy. This means that people will frequently come into work even when they're ill because the don't want to use up their sick days. There are also a TON of people who have kids. Kids are adorable yet disgusting little germ-incubators.

We get flu shots at work for free.
It takes 5 minutes to sign up, sign the release and get the stupid shot.

The only side effects I experience are a little achiness in my joints and soreness at the injection site. I can live with that.

my dad is a principal of a nyc school that was closed today

a third of the students called in sick

there were no reported cases of swine flu

possibly, worried parents, since it was also a friday, allowed their kids to stay home. the city, worried that all these kids were actually sick, closed the school for 5 days.

Goddammit:

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

DePaul learned late this afternoon that a resident student who lives in Centennial Hall on the Lincoln Park Campus has tested positive for H1N1 flu. At the moment, the student remains on campus in an isolated area established for this purpose and reports improvement. Staff members are assisting the student with academic and personal needs.

We do not believe there is any cause for alarm. The university began increasing its routine disinfection of classrooms and commonly touched objects earlier this month to prevent the spread of germs and will continue to do so. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are no longer recommending that schools with a flu case close. Consequently, DePaul will remain open and continue operating under normal business conditions.

What a shitty pandemic. A case finally shows up basically in my backyard and I don't get any classes cancelled?!? DENIED.

Being a Catholic school, they probably figure some prayers and burning incense will drive away that flu.

By fall we will have mandatory flu shots for US citizens. It's bringing the world to it's knees.
