i was thinking about it recently while i was looking at pictures on Facebook: are pictures ruining the memories that we have of our past? sure, i like to have a nice captured history of my past, but much of the pictures are unneeded and useless. if i didn't have pictures of a certain night, then i probably would never remember it. so much idle time being taken in the use of pictures: organizing, dating, commenting ... who needs it. sure, i have an album of pictures i hold dear or from times that i truly don't want to forget. many of the best times in my life, i didn't have a camera, though, at points, i wish i did.
so, if i can't remember those times without my pictures, are they worth remembering, are the pictures worth keeping?
would you rather have pictures or memories to retain the good times in your life?

I have a terrible memory. Always have.
I'd have forgotten alot of good times if it werent for pics and letters from long ago.

I have pictures as well as memories.
All my pictures are of places and things though. I don't have many pictures of people on display.

I like having pictures to share the memories with people who may not have been a part of it, i.e. kids or something.

All I need are my memories. When I get too old and they start to fade, kill me on the spot.

Ditto. You can't share a memory.Pictures will also jog the memory and remind you of things that you may have forgotten.

i was thinking of you when i made this thread, actually. i just felt awful when it happened to you, because the same type of thing happened to me a long time ago.
someone recently said that the best memories will never be truly caught on camera, and that we should not even bother taking the picture because it will dumb down the memory

if you don't keep the pictures from that party, how are you going to batch to every single person in attendance?
I like having pictures to show that once upon a time I dated some good-looking women.

I used to be a memories guy, and until a couple years ago I hadn't taken a single photo for a decade' never saw the point. Now that I have a kid, I actually look back at the pictures a lot. Makes me smile during the darker days.

You women don't know the masturbatory power of the male mind.
I can remember a chick who walked past me on 6th avenue 5 years ago cuz of the skirt she was wearing.

I'm sure I've forgotten some cool things, but there is no way I would ever want to be "girl with a camera" at Disney or a field party.I love photography, but it removes me from the situation and I can't stop checking my camera and fumbling with it once I have it with me. I'd rather live in the moment than walk around with equipment stuck to my face and one eye closed.
Having kids would probably cure me of this.

I rally do not have many photos so memories are more important. Though, a picture can help remember a certain event. It is just, there was no one around to take picture of most of the things in my life.

Is this 1895? Is there a person on the planet who doesn't appreciate the value of personal photographs? This might be the most bizzare thread topic ever. It's like asking if puppies are cute.
Screw pictures.
"A melody remembered is far more sweet" or something like that.

i guess what i really meant was, do you want your most cherished memories being on camera? one of my favorite memories is of my grandfather and me walking together, and i feel like a picture capturing one moment in that time may hinder the moment as a whole.
