Nearly four years ago now (July 25th, 2005) a very good friend of mine passed away, he had been in a car accident and seemed fine until his death two days later. It hit me very hard at the time, not only because he was a great person and a caring friend, but also because he was a great writer, and never got to publish the way he wanted to.
About a year after his death a woman came into my shop when I still worked at Tweeter, after helping her and talking for a bit I realized that it was this friend's mother. We chatted for a bit about her son and she had mentioned that they were looking to get his writings published. I gave her my card and asked her to let me know if it ever happened.
Well Sunday she sent me an email saying they are having a reading of his works today at my old college, and that the book is on sale. I guess the long and short of it is that it was really cool to me to see that she still remembered 3 years later, and still kept my card. I know when she came in that it was still very much a raw wound for her, it feels good to know that that meeting made an impression on her, and hopefully, in some infinitely small way, helped her through it.
No real reason for this post, I guess just to ask if anyone else has had a similar experience... it's really an odd feeling, brought up a lot of old memories, good and bad, but also, it's one of the few times I've felt good about interactions with other people, like I helped and I CAN feel good about it.
