Hi Doctor Steve...

On Friday morning, I woke up with a painful swelling of the right side of neck and lower jaw. It was tender to the touch and it was very bothersome. The area of discomfort was behind the jaw, under the ear. There are no other symptoms. No sore throat, no cold.

Friday night, it was unbearable to the point I couldn't sleep too well.

Saturday, the pain was better after I took some advil, although it was still pretty swollen.

Sunday, I didn't need any pain meds at all, but it's still swollen, no longer painful to the touch. Also, the lower part of the inside of my mouth was in pain, back by the molars, where the gums and the inside of the cheek connect. It's definitely NOT tooth pain, like soft tissue pain.

Monday, the swelling has gone down further, but it's almost "hard" to the touch.

I set up an appt. with my doctor on Thursday, but I wanted to see what you thought.

It's most likely a blocked salivary gland, most likely the PAROTID gland. The medical term for this is "sialadenitis" (Sial=saliva adeno=gland itis=inflammation)

Sometimes you can get a stone in there, sometimes it just gets infected.

the parotid gland is the same gland that gets swollen typically with Mumps.

a lot of ENT docs will simply start you on sour candy...this pumps up the amount of saliva going through the duct and will often clear the obstruction. An antibiotic is often prescribed in case there's an infection too. Sometimes they'll stick a wire into the duct to clear it out.

Hope you're feeling better!

steve

Thanks Dr. Steve. My doctor said the same thing, so did my dentist.

Naaaa, stick with the 1st one. It's mean but it's funnier, maybe just because of the genocide slant.

You were right Matty.

Me too. Then I was wondering what Dr. Steve's remedy would be.

your pal,

So is this anything sour or only hard candy? (I want to know in case it happens again; he's a burr on the butt when he's sick.)

'Cause we had half a bag of Sour Patch Kids in the pantry; if I'd known, they would've been all Matty's.

We also have a ton of DumDum and super-sour Jolly Rancher pops left over from Halloween (I know; I overbought) so we have other things in the house that would work if the gummies wouldn't work.
