Why do so many people feel brave hiding behind a keyboard? Insulting women, talking tough and just being cowardly?
Do these people have any scruples? Are they just insecure? Disturbed? What do you think HK?

Personally, I always found internet muscles to be quite amusing... I have done more than my fair share of ball busting with people online, but I don't (to the best of my memory) recall ever actually threatening anyone online.

I think many people take these internet bullies way to seriously... I think a majority of the time it's just misunderstood sarcasm or ball-busting, that gets taken literally.

I agree FNM, it's only the internet, but calling a chick a c**t is cowardly and pathetic. Same with threats.

Heckler... if by c**t, you mean the unpopular slang term for a woman's genitals, then I can think of a lot more interesting things to call a woman (or a man for that matter) that could be considered more offensive... personally, I think words like that have been worn out...like they have lost a lot of the punch they once had.. I really don't see how that's considered offensive just because society says so... Personally, I know women that would rather be called cunt than a bitch...but hey, that's their choice, right ;)

I'm not up for calling a woman names but I'd have to know the circumstances under which it was said. Did the woman insult the man first? But also why is there a double standard. I'm sure if the woman call the man a d***, no one would think that she's a coward. Because she's a female? Hardly seems fair don't you think? If a person wants to be an online thug...let them be. You can be one if you want. It's only a matter of opinion.

Yea, I agree.

I especially hate people who threaten violence. Like I know this one guy who threatens everyone that he will hit them in the head with a dodgeball. Especially this one guy who is TWICE his size!

I think I will leave this thread now

On my philosophy newsgroup, some members have been saying we should nuke Iran. They also say that I'm evil because I opposse forceful retaliation (even though I'm for self-defense, of course).

The funny part is, most of these guys are pussy book-sellers who like to talk tough. I wonder if they'd spout the same bullshit face to face...maybe they would, but the keyboard certainly makes it easier.

In my opinion, sometimes it's not so much insulting chicks are goofing around with them. As for why brave? A lot of people are bad out in public, lack of confidence in how they sound, look and feel as if their words sound better on a keyboard because they don't have to be quick with a response, they can just wait, think of what they say and post. You don't lose your nerve when all you see it text as opposed to seeing people.

That's easy! Its because I'm such a chicken-shit in person. I get shy around people, so the only way I can express myself is behind the keyboard. That and I hope that people forget half the shit I say anyway to avoid confrontation.

i dont think anyone i've met in person from a message board is what they act like behind a keyboard. i found the majority that are bullies are just losers that got picked on all their lives and this that's the only way they can bully others around

I agree 100% with Jenni. I don't take anything seriously from someone who spends all day behind a keyboard yet thinks he has the right to judge me. I think some people need to realize that they are not any better than anyone else. As for anyone insulting me on the computer, please....if you think you can pretend to know about my life and think you can insult me think again. Look in the mirror before you come looking for a fight from me. You are nothing more than a screen name.

Sheepy sweetheart words are only as powerful as we let them be. When we allow ourselves to take negative things to heart we are giving those words the life, not the person who says them. Ever notice hoe compliments we are given never have the same effect as insults? Why do you think that is? I think many people are far too hard on themselves so when we are insulted we take those negatives things more to heart than the positive ones. Sometimes people find that the bad stuff is always easier to believe. You have to keep reminding yourself to look more at the person who is insulting you. Who is he or she to insult you? Are they any better than you are? No, they aren't. A lot of the time the people who are insulting you are doing so to make themselves feel better. If you keep reminding yourself that other people have no power over you the less the words will hurt.

I think insult is mostly intent, not content. What I mean is, you can say: "Hey you sheep humping son of a bitch, when did you get out of jail?" and your buddy will recognize it as a friendly greeting. On the other hand, you can say, "Good morning" with such ice in your delivery that the person your speaking to will know they've been cut.
On a computer screen, tho, all inflection and expression are lost so you really have to think before you type. ( Which has always been a problem for me...)

The internet certainly makes some people "brave," in the sense that they feel able to express their deep seated feelings of hatred and prejudice with little fear of recrimination.

A person "brave behind a keyboard" is usually all talk. However, there are exceptions - those who are deeply disturbed in real life as well as on the internet.

Why do people insult others on the internet? Putting down others makes some feel "big". In real life they are usually little boys (emotionally) with deep rooted insecurity and even self-hatred. They post messages that are insulting or offensive so as to dehumanize a person or group they feel threatened by. The things said on the internet would most likely not be said in real life because the people who post them feel inferior about themselves and threatened by the person or group they slammed.

I try to be the same person on the 'net and in person. It's just easier b/c you know pepole will like you for who you are and what you think, as opposed to hate you for being annoying and bullying on a messageboard.

And I give this promise to each and everyone of you. If you ever talk to me in person, I will be more than happy to call you a cunt to your face, just ask me to. ;)

I think it is a little of what everyone describes. There are some insecure people out there that only feel better when they insult or degrade cause they are not happy and/or not happy with there own life...
as for me I am brave behind a keyboard, especially when I am holding it in my hand and swinging it at an intruder...

Oh and don't worry Jon, we all know you're just a big a prick in person as you are on the net http://www.plauder-smilies.de/happy/mdrmed.gif J/K!!

I may be a little more sarcastic on the net than I am in person but I think I am pretty much the same. That's what people tell me anyway. If I don't like someone they usually know it too. I won't be fake. I won't be rude or nasty, I'll usually just ignore the person/people I don't like for the most part.
