It has been all about the Chalk recently

I was a fan of the 2 Bin Suroor horses (more Desert Party), but I am not a fan of the 19th Post.

Friesan Fire, has class and 2 Kick Ass workouts

Lots of people will pick Dunkirk, because he can close and that Quality Road is out (Quality Road would have been the favorite if not injured)

Pioneer of the Nile is the West Coast Threat, but the West Coast has sucked ass in recent KDs

I Want Revenge is the favorite, what a kick ass performance in the Wood Memorial

The blimp shot on Mine That Bird was fucking ridiculous. Borel had to do something to get that kind of burst. He made every other horse look like they were running in slow motion. To think that was a $9500 gelding.

I think the real story of the weekend was Rachel Alexandra delivering an absolutely crushing performance in the Kentucky Oaks. Would love to see a Breeder's Cup showdown between her and Zenyatta.

Bet of the weekend was wheeling her in the Oaks / Derby double... Your $38 brought back a cool $237.40.

I just started getting into horse handicapping and I'm looking for some tips. I did some exacta and trifecta boxes with a little success and also won some small WPS bets on obvious favorites. What bets do you normally place and what is your strategy in a nutshell? I'm not asking you how to pick the winning horse, I'm just asking which bet types work for you.

silks

I'm just asking which bet types work for you.

99% of the wagers I place are either Pk3s or Pk4s. If a track offers a double on a race I feel particularly strong about some longer horses, I will play that. With these multiple race bets you can spread things out. It's easier to pick only horses that you think are going to win than try to determine who is going to finish 2nd or 3rd (of course, if you're a good trip handicapper and are good at envisioning how races are going to set up, this is easier).

I tend to stick with cheaper tracks (right now I LOVE Charlestown), and can look at a race and eliminate half the field within a few minutes. I take who I think are contenders, narrow it down, and construct a pk3 or pk4 ticket. There isn't a lot of smart money at these smaller tracks either, and you can get some really nice value. A lot of tracks are now offering a $.50 pk4, which is a great bet. You can put together a crazy ticket without shelling out a big investment.

If I find a horse I feel is a strong win play, I'll throw a few longer horses under in an exacta part-wheel. Also, if a track offers a $.10 superfecta, I'll put ridiculous long shots under it and hope something silly comes in. I've actually had some pretty nice scores like that, with tickets that ended up costing under $4.

Most tracks offer rolling pick 3s, so give one a shot. You can play 2 horses per race in the sequence for $8 (for a $1 ticket), so it's not like you're going to have to break the bank. It can get kind of tedious, since the bet is spread out over a few races, and it can be tough blow getting knocked out of the first leg of a pk4 after you put together a sizable ticket, but going into the last leg with a few live horses is a rush. You can always put together some exacta tickets on the side so you have action every race.

Good luck!

Do you place all your bets for a particular race immediately before that race starts? It sounds like you concoct some pretty complicated bets so it might be tough to make those decisions then wait in line at the window and relay all that info to the cashier in the half hour or so between post times.

You definitely have to do some legwork beforehand. I always go through the card the night / morning before and get a feel of what I want to play. Then, between races, I fine tune things, compensate for scratches or changes, and figure out how to put my bets together.

I live in NJ, and we have account wagering. I place most of my bets online and watch either on the internet feed, TVG, or HRTV. I haven't dealt with a teller in years, and if I do go to the track or off-track facility, I always use the self wagering terminals. Once you get the hang of them, you can punch bets out in no time. Like you said, if the bets get really wacky, trying to say 10 cent super, 6 with 1,4,7,8,9 with 1,3,4,7,8,9 with 1,2,3,4,5,7,9,11 to a teller will get you quite a look!

Since I live in NJ, I use the state's online wagering system. I have an account with them, like a bank account, and I can wager from it online, via telephone, or at any of the racetracks or off-track facilities in NJ.

I checked for Missouri and it looks like you're out of luck as far as account wagering goes. There are services like TVG and twinspires.com that are fantastic, but they're only available in certain states. Unfortunately, Missouri isn't one of them. Where do you go to bet?

Managed to get signed up on bodoglife.com and just won $175 on a $2 exacta box. I had been going to Fairmount Park in Collinsville, IL. bodoglife.com is pretty decent but it looks like you have to buy any real information on the horses from equibase.com for like $2 a horse for the past race info.

Do you know of any sites that have the horse info for free?

silks
05-13-2009, 04:18 PM
I think that Bodog and sites of that ilk have caps on payouts... something to keep in mind, especially when playing exotics. However, they do offer rebates, along with other perks, which is great.

I download all my past performances online from tsnhorse.com - I've been using them for years and they're great. Excellent products and customer service. They start as low as $.50 per track, and go up in price depending on how much information they contain. You can download samples for free to see what you like best. Personally, I like the Ultimates, lots of good breeding information, especially helpful with 2yo's.

Maybe send Bodog an email, some sites offer free PP's if you have an account.

After keying on a few faves;
Some horses that I won't be forgetting in my ex's and tri's on Saturday at the tote machine:

General Quarters... Julien Leparoux is my favorite jockey, and the horse could be a spoiler.

Friesan Fire... Crapped out in the derby but hopefully got the "no go" jitters out of the way

Pioneer of the nile... Past perf. and bloodline

Mine that bird... Are we looking at a soupy track again on Sat? And for the Cinderella story.

I watched the whole Pimlico card yesterday and it seemed like the track was playing pretty evenly, which is unusual as that place is normally a speedway. I wonder if rain will change that. I did notice that the rail was the place to be. Could post 13 be an issue for this filly? Could the rain erase that rail bias? I'm going to have to watch the races today before making a play. I'm seriously looking at using Musket Man, and the 6, Terrain intrigues me.

Good luck!

The exotics payed nicely. I would have had the tri a few times if Musket Man would have held on for 2nd. I did have the Black Eyed Susan / Preakness double though, so I ended up a little ahead of even.

Great run by the filly. I really hope they don't enter her in the Belmont. Let her rest up, give her a run in the Haskell and then on to the BC. I'm sure her owner will put her in the Classic, but I'd much rather see her run against Zenyatta in the F&M.

I do hope that 'Bird' starts in the Belmont... I think he'll like the added distance. Wonder if the owners are kicking themselves for gelding him?

If this happens... I don't see it being anything more special than just a trivia question. When you talk about past winners in TC events (or TC winners, for that matter) it's the horse that's thought of.

I'd say he won 3 TC events in the same year...definately not that he won "the Triple Crown".

In the Derby it rained and at the Preakness, it started to rain and the track was wet for 5 mins. Mine that bird, likes the slop. It is a longer race, so have to check to see what other horse is a long runner or a late breaker. Either way it should be a interesting race.

I have to disagree. The Belmount is always the best, longest of the three. And their is a good chance that for the first time a jockey could win the triple crown but not a horse. I say something to look forward to. I just hope i win some cash, which is most important.

Classic discussion on Friday's show... Ron and a caller talking about hanging around on the Paddock Level on a weekday afternoon. It couldn't have been a more accurate description! When I was in college, I used to hang out down there on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, and it really is like a little degenerate fraternity.

Sports gambling in Delaware is going to be a major blow to an already struggling gambling industry here in NJ. The Meadowlands is struggling to compete with NY and PA who both have slot supplements. Monmouth will always be around, but the quality of racing there is constantly declining. Sports wagering in Delaware will boost purses even more, making Delaware Park even more appealing to thoroughbred owners.

The casinos in AC will also be hit. The senior citizen nickel slot players will always be bussed in, but most of the younger male crowd would much rather spend a day betting on football than sitting at a roulette table. It's the state's own fault for being closed-minded. I haven't been to AC in years, but from what I've heard it's in pretty rough shape... it's only going to get worse.

He gets to have fame and his name goes in the history books, otherwise he gets a nice pay off for winning all three races, but that is what he would normally get. He does not get anything special.

The triple crown winner is really for the horse.

Field of 10 expected for the Belmont: http://www.drf.com/news/article/104265.html

It's a good thing that RA was dropped from the Belmont... the Preakness showed that the distance would have likely been too much for her and there was not a lot left for her to prove. Her Oaks performance showed that she would have stood a good chance to win the Derby, so we might have not only had our first Triple Crown in over 30 years, but a filly to boot. (Although probably not.)

The real problem is that MTB is going to be bet down to around even money, possibly even 4/5 by post time, and that's not worth taking. Not much fun in betting the chalk in Triple Crown races anyway...

Going to be betting from the Sussex County OTB (my living room) this weekend, but I want to make a trip to Monmouth. If you head down again this summer, let me know and we can all set something up.

Belmont today. Not a whole lot of speed in here. 'Bird' might have difficulty finding something to close in to. Some of the off the pace horses might try to get up front early, but I think Miner's Escape will be out there winging it early, and Charitable Man will get a nice trip. I plan on using him. Nice distance breeding on the sire side and is 2 for 2 over the Belmont surface. Third start off the layoff is always one of my favorite angles too.

Dunkirk is dangerous, but I don't know what to make of him. I would have to think the Derby was a aberration. If he can revert back to his earlier form, he'll be right up there.

I definitely plan on using Chocolate Candy and Summer Bird (just because of Desormeaux and the added blinkers) in my trifectas.

This is actually a tough little race if you're trying to bet against Mine That Bird.

Good luck to all. Let's make some $ today.

Good luck to everyone. watching the otb channel, placing bets online from my phone...technology is so cool. I am not counting on Mine that bird. The track is not wet. Have to look at the paper and see who else is running. But what do I know. I just bet the first and got crap.

Had a couple of decent exactas early in the card, but can't seem to put together a pk3 or pk4 ticket to save my life. Luckily that will help me coast through the day.

Good luck, gentlemen.

Where do I look on the paper to see what kind of track the PP's were on? (turf, etc.)

I hate how they switch over to ABC and don't follow the undercard races. How many emotional pieces do we need leading up the Belmont?

Looking at the last race, going from left to right, you have...
- Date of last race - 16 May 09
- Race number - 11
- Track - Pimlico
- Track Condition - Firm
- Distance - 1 1/8
- Surface - The T in the circle is turf. An A in a circle means All-Weather Surface. An X in a circle means originally scheduled for the turf but run on the dirt (usually a sloppy track)

This is from the Daily Racing Form, but it's pretty much the same notations regardless of the source.

nice race by Dunkirk though

Dunkirk ran an awesome race.

Love that Borel thought he was hot shit and ended up getting screwed in the end. Desormeaux was absolutely right when he said that Borel was being naive going into the race thinking it was just like any other. I'm sure he let that horse run and then going around that long final turn finally realized that this wasn't some 3/4 mile swamp track.

Had to sweat out the inquiry, but hit the exacta and superfecta. Ended up using Summer Bird and Charitable Man in Pk3s and the late Pk4 but couldn't convert - Gabby's Golden Gal winning 9th killed me. Fuck Baffert.

Congrats on the Superfecta win. I barely missed it.

The only reason I won anything yesterday was because of Gabby's Golden Gal in the #9 race.

Mucho Macho Man ran strong at the end, too, which could make a very interesting Preakness showdown.
