Hygiene Etiquette

Now I can understand why we all wash our hands after using the bathroom; it prevents disease and is a courtesy to others. But how come nobody ever mentions washing our hands BEFORE we use the bathroom? I mean, our hands are exposed to all sorts of things throughout the day and then we get all grabby with our equipment when we need to go... Personally, out of self respect I wash up before as well as after...
