Radio personality Shannon Burke accused of shooting wife, dog

Orlando radio personality Edward Shannon Burke of Real Radio 104.1 is behind bars this morning, accused of firing a shot inside his Altamonte Springs area home that injured a family dog and then grazed his wife in the head.

Burke, 43, faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and animal cruelty. He is being held without bail in the Seminole County Jail.

He told deputies he became angry with the pet late Thursday and was waving a firearm that he thought was not loaded, Sheriff's spokeswoman Kim Cannaday said. The bullet passed through the dog's leg and then grazed his 48-year-old wife Catherine, she said.

Catherine Burke was taken to Orlando Regional Hospital. The dog, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, was taken to an emergency vet clinic.

Burke's wife wants protection, describes night of shooting

The wife of former 104.1 FM radio personality filed court papers today in which she says the bullet that struck both her and her dog was not fired by accident.

In fact, Cathy Burke -- who is still in the hospital, having undergone reconstructive surgery to her head -- said her husband, Shannon Burke, had problems with the first cartridge in the .40 calibre handgun ... so he ejected it and loaded another before firing.

"He walked over to the closet and grabbed his gun and told me 'I'm going to shoot the dog in the head and you are going to watch' " Cathy Burke wrote in her statement. She went on to say that her husband then threw the dog on the ground, "pointed the gun directly at her and shot the gun."

When nothing happened, Cathy said her husband re-loaded the gun and fired again -- this time with success.

"Charlotte [the dog] yelped in agony and directly after I felt a burning pain on the side of my head," she said. "I fell backwards against the pillows and noticed the gush of blood on my head and pillows."

Nowhere in the statement does Cathy suggest that her husband was attempting to hurt her. In fact, she never describes him pointing the gun at her at all.

Still, in the petition for injunction for protection against domestic violence, Cathy Burke wrote that her husband had gotten violent before. She detailed an incident in January where she said Burke was angry and intoxicated and "got so upset with me that he pushed me over a chair... hitting my head and chin on a stereo speaker." Cathy Burke said her 17-year-old daughter and her husband's 10-year-old child were in the home at the time. The couple has been married for about a year.

She also detailed other incidents and problems -- and included several photographs of both her own head (featuring a trail of stitches that start above her right eyebrow and go across the top of her skull, ending behind her ear) as well as of the injured dog.

Burke was charged with animal cruelty and aggravated assault -- and was finally released from jail this afternoon.

Sentinel reporter Gary Taylor is putting together a complete story for tomorrow's paper.

As far as Burke goes I learned from a reliable source who might have worked there a few years ago that he is a douche on and off air. The way he acted on air was the way he acted off air. Rumor is there are a lot of current and former WTKS employees that are happy he is gone. I'm not a fan either I was just pointing out some facts.Philips appeals to an older demographic. He is very involved in local issues and politics and his opinion carries alot of weight. You also have to take into account the area.Orlando is an ok city but they broadcast to a large rural part of central Fl.This explains the success of the Monsters and their red neck schtick.Jefe and Jdubs got the shaft.Their show was very popular and I believe they were fired for simple monetary concerns.

Burke back in jail

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Former Real Radio 104.1 FM deejay Shannon Burke had a brief taste of freedom, but it was short-lived after deputies with the Seminole County Sheriff's Office re-arrested him on Wednesday evening. Burke, 43, bonded out of jail on Tuesday after his May 1 arrest on charges that he shot his wife and her dog. Following his arrest, it was revealed that Burke was serving probation for charges related to a reckless driving incident in 2007. As part of that probation, he was not permitted to possess a firearm.

According to Lt. James Clark with the Seminole County Sheriff's Office, Burke was arrested on Wednesday for violating an injunction stating that he was not to have contact with his wife, Catherine. Lt. Clark added that Burke, through a friend, attempted to collect some of his belongings from his Altamonte Springs' home, where his wife currently resides.

"Burke arranged to have a friend retrieve some belongings from the home and gave him a key. The friend attempted to retrieve those belongings earlier this evening. This third party contact with the victim was determined to be a violation of the pre-trial release conditions," said Lt. Clark. "We don't believe that he had any bad intentions."

Catherine Burke's attorney, Michael K. Rathel, said Wednesday's incident was determined to be "indirect contact," which violated the terms of Shannon Burke's release. However, Richard Hornsby, the attorney representing Shannon Burke, tells FOX 35 that he does not believe his client was ever served the injunction to begin with, contending that Burke could not have violated an injunction which he was never served.

When questioned about the shooting, Burke said he pointed what he thought was an unloaded gun at his wife's dog, before the weapon discharged. The bullet struck the dog in the leg, then ricocheted across the room and grazed Catherine Burke's head, according to statements taken on the night of the shooting.

Shannon Burke claims the whole thing was an accident, but according to court documents filed by Catherine Burke, she says it was no accident.

In the temporary injunction filed by Catherine Burke's attorney, to keep Shannon Burke away, Catherine claims it was not the first time Burke got violent while drinking. FOX 35 has learned two other women in Burke's past have similar stories. His ex-wife Susan Pendergraft filed for full temporary custody of their child on Monday. Court records show she claims his erratic, volatile and escalating behavior is the reason. She also claims burke displayed a loaded gun in front of their child.

And then there's Deanne Schulz, Burke's ex-girlfriend. They have one child together. She filed an injunction last Friday after learning of his current arrest. In those court documents, Schulz states Burke had been violent toward her. She claims he threatened her. Schulz says Burke even exposed and fired off a gun in front of her and her children.

Shannon Burke was never charged with a crime related to these domestic issues. His attorney did not agree to FOX 35’s request for an interview or comment Wednesday.

Catherine Burke is at the couple's Altamonte Springs' home, recovering from reconstructive surgery. Her dog, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, was retrieved from a Winter Park animal hospital.

"Right now, she's able to walk around, healing well. They're going to have stitches together and heal together," said Rathel.

Burke was released from the Seminole jail on Tuesday with a ankle monitoring device. He posted $15,000 bail after a judge in Orange County set bail at $5,000 on the probation-violation. Burke is now back in the Seminole County and his first appearance, related to the injunction violation, is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

In addition to the violation of injunction, Burke is charged with aggravated battery with a weapon and animal cruelty.

you almost got it...

It was Howard, Monsters, the Phile then Drew Garabo.

Monsters went to the Mornings when Clear Channel took Stern off their stations (pre-satellite days), Jim Philips and the Philips Phile are the one that the Pest destroyed, and The Drew Show was let go cause his numbers went to number one for like one month and then dropped like a rock cause of his attitude. The Hideout was on for a few years and then got the axe....then they brought in Buckethead just a few months ago.

WTKS use to be a great listen before 2003....but after the FCC cracked down on them, they really had to vanilla up the content and people left the show....Folks here need to remember, the Monsters are the ones that had the Ron and Ron reunion show...that was when I first started listening to them....who knew it would lead me to Ron and Fez in the futurue...wow.....but, before that, it was excellent radio that I enjoyed long before XM.

I think he should get punishment for shooting the dog, but he should really be punished for causing harm to his wife more so than the animal. It sickens me that he'll spend more time in prision for shooting the dog than hurting his wife.

Shannon Burke: Radio personality Shannon Burke not allowed to bond out of jail

SANFORD - For the time being, radio personality Shannon Burke will be calling the Seminole County Jail his home.

Seminole County Judge John L. Woodard III set bail at $2,500 for his arrest Wednesday night on a charge that he violated conditions of his pre-trial release. But then, because he felt Burke had violated those terms, Woodard revoked the bond from that arrest last Friday and ordered him held without bail.

On Wednesday, according to the Seminole County Sheriff's office, Burke arranged to have a friend retrieve some belongings from his home, giving him a key to the residence. When the friend made contact with Catherine Burke, that violated the terms of his pre-trial release, Sheriff's spokeswoman Kim Cannaday said. So he was re-arrested and hauled back to jail.

Burke's attorney, Richard Hornsby, argued that sending a third party did not violate the terms of his release. He also argued that the contact was unintentional "because everybody was under the impression she [Catherine Burke] was still in the hospital."

But Woodard said Burke signed an agreement when he was fitted with a monitoring device that prohibited third-party contact.

Woodard also revealed that Orange County probation officials have again charged Burke with violating his probation in that county on a 2007 alcohol-related reckless driving case. They ordered him held without bail on that charge.

Catherine Burke's attorney, Michael K. Rathel, said his client knew the man who came to her house.

"When she found out who it was, it wasn't as bad," he said. But he said she was extremely frightened when she first heard someone trying to get into the house.

Burke had given the man a key, but the locks had been changed.

Rathel told the judge that his client was in fear for her life and that she believed he would violate the terms of his release if he was allowed out of jail.

Woodard set arraignment for June 2.

Catherine Burke came home from the hospital Wednesday and her pet Cavalier King Charles spaniel Charlotte came home from a Winter Park veterinary clinch a short time later. But the dog had to be taken back to clinic because she became so worked up during the Wednesday night incident that she ripped open her stitches.

Both are recovering from gunshot wounds suffered a week ago.

Burke, 43, faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and animal cruelty, accused of firing a single .40-caliber bullet that passed through the dog's leg and grazed the side of his wife's head.

Shannon Burke's fans slam his wife in phone calls

Fans of Shannon Burke, fired 104.1 radio host, are lashing out at his wife in telephone calls, but the calls aren't reaching Catherine Burke, her attorney said.

Fans of fired radio host Shannon Burke are lashing out at his wife in telephone calls, but the calls aren't reaching Catherine Burke, her attorney said.

"I had her home phone and cell phone numbers changed," said Michael K. Rathel.

So the calls are being directed at Rathel's Orlando office, he said.

One caller, in a message recorded on voice mail at the office, said "that [expletive deleted] deserved what she got," Rathel said.

Shannon Burke, meanwhile, remains in the Seminole County Jail, held without bail after he was accused of violating terms of his pre-trial release after his May 1 arrest.

Shannon Burke freed from jail

Shannon Burke, former Real Radio personality, must get psychological help, stay away from booze, drugs, guns

ANFORD - Former radio personality Shannon Burke late this afternoon walked out of the Seminole County Jail.

Earlier in the day, a judge authorized his release, provided he posted $25,000 bail, gets psychological help and stays away from drugs, alcohol, guns and his wife.

Burke, 44, had been at the jail since May 6.

He was arrested May 1, accused of grabbing his wife's dog in a fit of rage in their bedroom and shooting it. The bullet wounded the dog's back leg then hit Burke's wife, leaving a long shallow groove along the right side of her head. She was temporarily hospitalized.

Shannon Burke told authorities he was playing with his .40-caliber handgun when it went off.

He was in court this morning in handcuffs and ankle chains, asking a judge to free him.

Before the 10-minute hearing began, attorneys for both sides had already worked out their terms: He must post $25,000 bail. He must wear an ankle strap so a satellite can track his whereabouts. He must get a psychological evaluation, and, if the psychologist recommends it, check into a month-long drug rehabilitation program that also treats underlying psychological problems. He also must stay away from his wife, the home near Altamonte Springs where she was wounded, and he must stay away from guns, drugs and alcohol.

Burke said little at the hearing.

"You understand the stipulation?" asked Circuit Judge Marlene Alva.

"Yes, your honor," he said.

Prosecutors yesterday officially filed charges against Burke for the shooting the night of April 30.

He's charged with shooting into an occupied dwelling, animal cruelty and violating the terms of his pre-trial release. The maximum possible penalty: 21 years in prison.

His attorney, Mark O'Mara, entered Burke's plea: not guilty.

Catherine Burke, 48, the scar still visible, was at today's hearing but said nothing.

Burke was arrested the night of the shooting. He was released two days later on $10,000 bond but was ordered to stay away from his wife.

He was re-arrested days later after he sent a friend to the couple's house to retrieve belongings. A judge ruled that Burke had violated an order that he have no contact with his wife and that he stay away from their home.

Another complicating matter is probation. Burke is serving 12 months of probation because of an alcohol-related driving arrest in Orange County in 2007. His probation officer now says he's violated the terms of his probation by committing a new crime: the shooting.

Burke was fired by Real Radio 104.1-FM, WTKS, shortly after his arrest.

O'Mara said he was not sure what Burke would do for a living now.

"I'm just glad he's getting out so he can get some help," O'Mara said.

That stuff is hilarious to listen back to. Bubba has played clips of those days on Sirius and FM and is embarrassed and uncomfortable with his old wigger shtick. The Stern show busted his balls about it too.
