Holy crap! I never thought to try this stuff because the idea always seemed a little weird to me, but they were on sale in King Kullen and I figured I would give it a shot. I got the garlic and parsley and man is it good. I spread it like butter on whole wheat bread and it just tastes so good and garlicy.
I got this brand here:

Athenos is pretty good in a pinch, but do yourself a favor and find a good middle eastern restaurant or market and get the real deal. You shouldn't be disappointed.

Fuckin' A man, hummus RULZ! I've been lucky my whole life, my dad is from a culture that this is a common dish.
We get it by the can, put it in a flat dish, pour some olive oil over it and eat it with fresh pita bread. It's great with just about anything or on it's own.
I like a certain kind of hummus known as "musabaha" which is just hummus with whole chic peas in it. It adds an interesting texture.
If you can only get the store stuff it's fine though, I eat that sometimes too. The different flavors they have are great. I even get the hot red pepper hummus with pretzel crisps snacks from Quick Check.

Bingo, that place will also have real, fresh pita bread which makes the whole experience so much better. I have yet to find a commercial pita bread that is anywhere near the quality of actual pita bread.
But when I can't find fresh pita I use plain corn tortilla chips.

I usually add in a few roasted red pepper pieces (from a jar) when I blend it.

We won't eat that store bought shit. We only have it when my friend Herb makes it fresh.
Then we stink of garlic for 2 or 3 days.

I've been making my own lately, and I'm loving it. Good food/snack for when you're trying to lose a few pounds too.
I've always loved the hummus at Cafe Mogador on St. Marks Place. I've haven't been able to get there for breakfast in forever.

Only thing I'd say the store bought ones have over home made or canned is the crazy flavors premade. Sure you could just add more garlic or red pepper but it's convenient, they did all the work.

Ummm, yes. They sell it at every half way stocked supermarket in the country now. Go to the deli section where the blocks of cheese are sold and you're gonna find some. Eat it with plain tortilla chips to start. I suggest pita bread but eat it with something familiar 1st.

I will try and make my own. Seems easy. I will roast some garlic inside foil in my toaster over and them blend canned chickpeas and parsley and maybe a bit of olive oil and the squeezed out roasted garlic in a food processor and see how it comes out. Maybe add some parmesan? Would that work?
it's really easy to make from scratch, and it's a great (and healthy) alternative to cream cheese on your bagel

you really need to get the fresh flat/pita bread from the middle-eastern stores "like in Patterson" You get some of that flat/pita bread, throw some string cheese in and micro it for about 25 seconds, good stuff

I sometimes question it myself but that is the claim. We do have a giant Greek community originally built around the sponge diving industry in th 1880's.Now they just run everything which is cool.We never have any complaints about Christmas decorations or a wall mural that shows a mermaids nipple,or nudity on statues. You know, the kind of stuff that most towns have someone pissed off about.
You can even go into town and buy Fisher Price toys or Disney movies that are in Greek. We are also the only place in the U.S. that celebrates the Epiphany every Jan.6.
Being here hasn't made me a fan.

I believe it's called "Grape Leaves." It's a Syrian guy who runs it but he makes some Syrian specialties along with a lot of common Middle Eastern/Mediterranean fair. At least, that's what the article said.
