View Full Version : Was I a jerk?

Driving etiquette question:
I was driving with my wife in a strip mall yesterday. The strip mall has a complicated layout, with many pedestrian walkways through the parking lot.
Now, there are actual, "real" stop signs with stop lines and such, and there are the plastic signs in the pedestrian paths that say "Stop for Pedestrians".
It is always been my understanding that you stop for pedestrians if there is a pedestrian in the walkway or if someone has "committed" or made the turn of going into the walkway, or is standing, waiting to go through the walkway. If there is no one in the walkway or there is no "commitment", you go through.
As we're driving through the lot, I see two tremendously fat ladies walking out of the supermarket. They are walking in a straight line down the side walk, and they haven't turned or committed to the pedestrian walkway.
Just at the very POINT where it's too late to stop, they make the turn and IMMEDIATELY the older broad starts yelling at me (my windows are down) that I should stop for pedestrians in the walkway.
I immediately stop the truck and start yelling back and scream her down.
Was I in the wrong for not stopping, as she hadn't committed?

Agreed.
It was bad on my part to scream them down (and incidentally, I didn't call them fat or anything when I was yelling, I was just pissed that they started yelling at me when it was one of those split-seconds things)
It wasn't like I was barreling through the lot at 30 MPH. I was doing about 15.
I was more concerned about my etiquette before I lost my mind.

I gotta agree that Matt was in the right here.
Pedestrians have to realize that they too have responsibilities and for their own safety, they have to make their intentions known.
On a similar note, pedestrians on NYC streets have got to start realizing what a flashing dont walk sign means... it means dont enter the crosswalk if you havent already, and if you have, hurry the fuck up.

No, I'm making pizza bagels for dinner, but we have a nightstand for the guest room and shelving for the kitchen we need to get. They are open til 8 so I'd figure we'd go now and I can get stuff assembled tonight.

On a side note; you never want to run over fat people because of the damage it'll do to your own vehicle and imagine trying to clean all that skin out from the underside of your vehicle.

When we passed them, they hadn't yet left the curb, nor had they paused to ensure that they would not get smacked by 2 tons of steel. No, they were doing a very slow, rolling amble.
I agree with Chris - while walking, your SAFETY should be your priority, not a yield to pedestrians sign! (And can someone tell the schmucks in Newark who cross against the light that the red hand doesn't mean "Walk" ?)

No need to scream, just turn and calmly say "Shut the fuck up you fucking manatee." I find that tone works best.

First of all, no you're not in the wrong. I teach my kids that even when they have the walk sign to stop before they cross to make sure no traffic is coming.
But I do find it interesting that you had to identify the people involved as "fat". Would it have made a difference if they were skinny (or men)?

By them being fat it makes them easier to yell at. I say you did absolutely nothing wrong, with the not stopping or the yelling. Pedestrians need to pay more attention and don't think that just because they are walking they can do anything they want.
On a side note, one of my most favorite things to do as a bike messenger was hit pedestrians who tried to "ignore" me coming through a green light. Nothing more fun then seeing books and shit all over the road from stupid college kids.

I think it was just a descriptor for the story. These people weren't "overweight" or "chubby". They were BOTH the very, textbook definition of "Morbidly Obese". Two steps away from Gilbert Grape's mom.

scenario does not require you to stop, but would you have screamed her down if she were not fat?
