Yeah, yeah. I know. All music is free if you know where to look... I'm talking about legitimate sources for free music. There are lots of sites out there where you can download music for free. If you know of any, post them here.
A few I know of:
http://www.daytrotter.com/ - This has lots of free live, in-studio tracks to download from a variety of artists.
Amazon Free Tracks (http://www.amazon.com/b/?&node=334897011&pf_rd_p=469729471&pf_rd_s=right-3&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=678551011&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1880CYK122GKACZH6P2X) - Amazon offers about 500 different free tracks for download. It's a mixed bag, but you can sometimes find some things of interest.
Last.FM free tracks (http://www.last.fm/music/+free-music-downloads) - also a mixed bag, but there are some interesting things there.

The iTunes podcast "KEXP Song of the Day" is a great source of free daily music, downloaded automatically.

Look at me, maaaan.
Just because I'm in my 40's doesn't mean I'm not still hip and don't enjoy sticking it to the man, maaaaaan.
Stop trying so hard, Mr. Mom.

You're trying a little too hard with this one.
So if we have a site that posts albums, is that not okay to post on this here post?
This site is one that has lots of cool stuff on it, the girl who does it is a big fan of music, and there are many treasures on there if you look into the archives.

Ronnie is older than Mikeyboy but his musical tastes are well respected on this messageboard. Would you tell him to keep his opinions in music to himself?
I really hope this is a bit bro, because if it isn't it's fairly lame.

Um. The sites I listed are all legitimate ones -- sanctioned by the artists and their record companies as means to get their music out there. Not sure where you got the "sticking it to the man" bit.

This is coming from the man who doesn't like any music that was made after 1978? Seriously, you're not that old. There's no reason to act like it.
Also, If you check out the last.fm and amazon links I posted you would see that what they are offering is across many genres, and isn't limited to what I think what mean when you say "modern music".
This is one of your oddest fights. You must be freakishly bored.

I've been digging the fuck out of these 2 blogs, both big record collectors who post vinyl and the occasional demo rips with a bit of background info, almost all of it before 1986, back when music meant something *giggle*
http://www.kbdrecords.com/ - Very much in the vein of the kinds of records you'd find comped on the old Killed By Death records, if you're into that kind of punk rock.
http://www.goodbadmusic.com/ - Punk & Metal, run by some Swiss maniac. I otherwise would have never heard the unreleased Dayglo Abortions tape from 1983 featuring the hit "Whiter Than Hitler", nor would I have heard the Huvudtvätt / Picnic Boys split 7" from 1981.
check it out, if you're into that sort of thing.

http://www.archive.org/ - I'd call the site useless if it wasn't for the bunch of Hank III live shows up there. I'm guessing that anyone else who'd like the hippy/jam band stuff that dominates this site already knows about it.
http://www.archive.org/ .....
You beat me to it. There is a ton of live stuff up there. All sanctioned by the bands.
Go shit in Keith Richard's hat.
No need to soil Mr Richard's hat. I've found a hat a few years ago that would serve the purpose perfectly.

I used to use Pandora all the time. Not so much anymore but it was a good way to find some new music.
Here is the link I failed to provide earlier for Today's Music Blog (http://hypem.com/).
