Does Oprah go to one of her messageboards and answer questions people post there? Does Ellen drink with her fans? Does Oprah let aspiring hosts have valuable time on her show to showcase their talent?

Please, don't even speak The Budday's names in the same breath as those side show phonies.

If Oprah had her own channel which only aired Oprah (a one hour show) and the rest of the time was re-runs of Oprah, then someone playing Spoons for 3 hours would be a welcomed break.

"Valuable air time" is the wrong term here. Dead air time would be more suitable.
