HK, I don't get them nearly as often as I used to, but from time to time I still get absolutely awful migraine headaches. I'm suffering from one right now as I type this. My entire head throbs. Even my teeth. My hair actually hurts.
What I want to know is...has there been any real progress in migraine medication? Last I heard (a couple of years ago) most of the prescriptions had some potentially severe side effects. Migraine strength Excedrin seems to be about the best thing I've found, but it's still not as fast working as I'd like.
Thanks.

I get migraines from time to time. Although they aren't severe, they usually last 3-4 days which sucks. I won't take anything stronger than Tylenol though, I hate pills...

My mom is occasionally hit with a migrane headache which leaves her almost non-functional.
She takes some meds which help to some extent. She also uses an oxygen tank when experiencing the headaches.
During a migraine changes in brain activity cause blood vessels and nerves to inflame. Migraine medication attempts to reduce this inflamation.
The causes of migranes are not well understood. Some therories point to vulnerability of the nervous system to sudden changes in either your body or the environment around you.
A number of things are positively linked to migrane attacks.
Food: Alcohol, (especially red wine), MSG, tyramine, and meats preserved with nitrates and nitrites.
Sleeping patterns: Too much or too little sleep can trigger a migraine attack! (We're all doomed).
Hormones: There is a strong correllation between menstruation and migranes in women. "Menstruation migranes" tend to be more severe than other types. Migranes typically declines in frequency as women age. There is evidence that oral contraceptives or estrogen-replacement therapy can provoke or worsen migraine in some women.
Stress and Anxiety can trigger migranes. Exercise helps some people with their migraine pain.
Environmental Factors: Including weather or temperature changes, glaring or fluorescent lights, computer screens, strong odors, and high altitude.
