i've misremembered this; she let the kiddies live.
Great Paul Westerberg song, "Crackle & Drag" about Plath and her suicide.
also, Ted Hughes, her philandering poet husband at the time, had two of Plath's unpublished journals acquired by her alma mater, Smith College, in 1982, sealed until 2013.

They quote Leviticus and ignore the rest. Because the rest is insane:
"A man curses and blasphemes while disputing with another man. Moses asks God what to do about it. God says that the whole community must stone him to death. "And the children of Israel did as the Lord and Moses commanded."
God tells the Israelites to make slaves out of their neighbors and their families. The "heathens" and "strangers" are to be their possessions forever.

What?
The problem is there are Fundamentalists: They believe the world was created in 7 days, Adam and eve were cast out of Eden, the world was destroyed by a great flood (save for 2 of each animal and Moses and his family), Abraham lived for 175 years, people were turned to pillars of salt, Jesus was the result of a virgin birth, Jesus rose from the dead, etc. They don't believe those stories are allegories. Yes, there are people that don't believe everything in that book, and they are labeled Cafeteria Catholics (they pick and choose what they choose to believe from the bible).
Who gets to decide what parts are allegory, and what parts are not? Who gets to decide what parts should be taken literally, and which parts should be taken figuratively?

The New Testament may be, but the Old Testament not so much. And many of the "rules" there were actual Hebrew laws that the faithful followed, and many still do, including not eating shell fish or eating kosher etc. But some of these "rules" are no longer followed.
Who gets to decide what parts are allegory, and what parts are not? Who gets to decide what parts should be taken literally, and which parts should be taken figuratively?
everyone does for themselves, of course!

Every religion has different factions within it that interpret things differently.
My issue is with people who try to convince you that you are wrong in what you believe
(as opposed to just agreeing to disagree)

not exactly.
The Old testament/Jewish bible has story sections, and rule sections.
the rules weren't supposed to be open to interpretation (although they are - not just in following or not, but in what defines things- such as what constitutes "work").
The story sections, while considered to be true, are not always "literal"-
ie- the 7 days of creation aren't always thought to be 7 days as we have now- therefore reconciling the dates in the bible with scientific discoveries.

I wish i had an answer for ya, but i dont. In interest of full disclosure, i sit on the board of my church, although our discussions are relegated to matters unrelated to the spiritual. That being said, i am a firm believer that someone's relationship with God is a personal one, so what they take to be allegorical or literal sometimes comes down to the individual. Certain things, however, should be viewed as literal if someone is to really comport with the tenets of their religion (i.e. resurrection of Christ, b/c that is the cornerstone of the faith)
I cant speak for the bible, because i didnt write it and have hardly "studied" it in any scholastic sense.
But we can agree that religious zealotry at the expense of the well being of others is never justified......which is why i follow a God who preached nothing but "Peace Love and Understanding" (God is a big Elvis Costello fan....)
