View Full Version : Should We Rename RonFez.net?
I've often said that because the name of this site contains the names of the hosts (and their show) it has a certain obligation to them. If you Google "Ron and Fez" or "The Ron and Fez show" the first thing that you will see is this message board.
Anyone who has listened for any amount of time knows that RonFez.net is the Official Unofficial Message Board of the show (or is it Unofficial Official?) and the members get invites and access to the show that non-members don't usually enjoy.
It is a double edged sword, though. In the past, Ron has spoken about how this very board has caused problems with both sponsors and prospective guests, and on this past Friday's show there were a few more concerns raised by the hosts concerning RFnet:
1) A member was chastised for speaking honestly about a sponsor
2) The administration of the board was urged to change the mod quote of a member that the hosts found offensive
Whether or not you agree or disagree with the objections of Ron and Fez is not the issue, but rather what you see as a solution to the problems.
The way I see it, there's really only 2 ways to remedy the predicament -
1) Make RonFez.net completely show friendly and force members to "toe the company line" so to speak. Mods would have to delete any threads or posts that are deemed detrimental to the show in any way.
2) Change the name of the show and sever any "Unofficial Official" ties with the show and allow all points of view to be heard, no matter how negative.
Again, it's a double edged sword, and you really can't have it both ways.
Forced to choose between the two options presented above, which way would you decide to go?

Well, the option of supporting my radio buddies meaning only that I say keep the name is a bit ill conceived. Perhaps by changing the name, we would be supporting them as well. If it would help their success, I'd be all for logging into another name.

I say give the domain name to Ron & Fez - they can use it for whatever they want. Put up ads, show rundowns, pics, RBI show stuff, whatever. They will have complete control and can keep it for the uber-fans and kissups if they want to.
The regular fan site/board can pick up another name and maintain whatever status it wants. If Ron & Fez want to support it, then great. If they don't, it's just another fan site on the internet.

The Ron and Todd show??? Don't know that Fez will go for that...
I said it before and I know others have mentioned it, keep certain areas for members only so sponsors and publicists don't see it when google searching the show or their names.
Keep only the Ron & Fez related area public and available to read for guests.
Threads that have topics that potentially hurt the show or their sponsors could be moved into the members restricted forums.

While those are valid points, would you recommend that all "fan sites" of any entertainer(s) choose between these options?
It makes sense to me that prospective sponsors and/or guests may look at this site and it may leave a sweet or sour taste in their mouth but, perhaps a third option should be available.
Perhaps there should be a banner on the ronfez.net main page and all pages as a disclaimer that this site was set up by fans of the show and for fans of the show (is also the unofficial show site) and that the on-air staff does not endorse any of the comments that are made by any of the board members.

Okay, I was listening to the show and I was the one who changed that modquote, but the way I heard it wasn't that they found the modquote offensive and "urged" us to change it. Ron told ESD that he didn't like the "clutter" and told ESD to email a mod and ask them to change it. It was more of a joke than, I can't believe they had that modquote and it needs to be changed.
BTW, the member that was "chastised" was the wife of a member of the show. That was the thrust of Fez's "chastizing."

this thread is clutter.
this thread is clutter.
Not really.
I've had long time, die-hard fans of the show express both of the opinions offered above as part of the poll.
Some are afraid the show is going to over manage this board like many accused O & A of doing with Wackbag. Others think moderators aren't doing their job by letting negative views stand, believing that this board isn't a place for free speech; it's privately owned and a FAN site.
I figured I'd throw it out there for discussion.
Most likely, however, I'll be accused of "stirring shit" and being a troublemaker.
Not that I really care.

Honestly, I just don't want to see this board dominated as Anthony dominated other boards of the O/A fandom. Sorry, but this site is anything but more offensive or a issue now, compared to the past. Ron USED to enjoy the ballbusting crew on the sites, run with them and even become friends with them (ie Alkey and Gvac). Now it seems that only those that agree and or love every second, can be accepted and or get WAY too much credit (GAZ and DMM). Sorry, I could give two shits about what key grip on Kid's in the Hall was the most underrated or Moe's "inside" ideas on music when he isn't even in a real fucking band.
It's all about the status quo these days, no other sides of the coin matter. Sad to say, it seemingly goes here, with the show and more and more as we move forward.

Hey Budday, I think it is a great idea. It has actually been brought up several times in the past. However, the board owners think it is a bad idea for some reason and won't do it; something about wanting to keep the site completely open so the show staff can come here and see things without registering. Of course that isn't an exact quote, but a summary of the comments made.

Honestly Tub, Gvac summed up a lot of the issues at that start of the thread. Are they enough to kill my love of the show? So far the answer is no. As for wanting in, I could care less. I listen to be entertained, I post to chill with friends with a similar interest and bust some balls. I don't however find the need to make everything about myself as so many here love to do. I'm convinced a good proportion of people here start every session with a search of their name and it's sad. In the past people always came here and had some fun with each other and took their lumps. Now, the focus has surely changed, I guess in response to the show (which can be argued).

Live your fucking lives and go outside for fuck's sake. If you truly think going to the movies with your daughter after a long week of work and posting all day with her sitting next to you is a good thing....then I fear your kids are fucked. I don't think the name should be changed at all. In fact, the show allowed these guys to use the domain name almost a decade ago (Carter and others to be factual) and they shouldn't go back on it now (not that they said they would).
In the end it's a fan site for a radio show, and they always take on a meaning of their own. The focus still remains the show at hand, but to say the focus is the same for all isn't even close to true.

1) Make RonFez.net completely show friendly and force members to "toe the company line" so to speak. Mods would have to delete any threads or posts that are deemed detrimental to the show in any way.
That, in a nutshell, is Wackbag. And THATS why I dont post there anymore.
If there was ever a poll that needed a PIMB otion, its this one. I cant vote because my choice would be: c) Keep the name - I want to speak freely
There is nothing more pathetic then an internet message board censored to keep sponsors and lawyers happy. Ugh. Reminds me of a board for Shredd and Ragan I once joined to bust balls. It was just.....soooo weak.
As much as I LOVE Ron & Fez I dont think I could post someplace that was just completely one sided because anyone who had a dissagreeing argument would see it get deleted.
In my opinion a fansite is just that. A site for the fans, by the fans. If the show or celeb embraces it, cool. If not, still cool. The site is usually created by people for fans of the show/person to come and have discussions. Personally, I find discussions where the people always agree with each other to be completely boring.

Having heard the segment of the show in question, it was so completely obvious to me that Ron's comments were a goof that I now must be in some kind of bizarro world where that goof was taken seriously.
WTF?
Also, the whole discussion is out of perspective until someone posts the mod quote that Ron "wanted" changed, i.e. the "before" quote. I mean, there's a difference if it was "I know the secret" or something more serious.

I don't think that both of the poll choices are mutually exclusive. I think that fans can speak freely and still be supportive of the show. If we make it so that everyone here can speak freely, we'd be overrun with trolls, and it seems like there have been more of them lately.
By the way, it's "tow the company line," not "toe the company line."

Some are afraid the show is going to over manage this board like many accused O & A of doing with Wackbag. Others think moderators aren't doing their job by letting negative views stand, believing that this board isn't a place for free speech; it's privately owned and a FAN site.
This is a legitimate concern and it's certainly not what I'd like to see here. However, I don't see that happening, and the fact that you and many other anti-Dave or anti-Fez shit-stirrers are still here is evidence that speech here is pretty free.
Most likely, however, I'll be accused of "stirring shit" and being a troublemaker.
Not that I really care.
If you want to be a board character who says "controversial" things under the guise of being thought-provoking, you can't expect not to have your opinions confronted. But don't play the martyr angle when you go on a website called Ronfez.net and say the Ron and Fez show sucks. I'm not saying your criticisms are illegitimate, but it's childish to expect those opinions to always get a warm reception. What's even more mind-boggling is the shock and indignation you feign when you get the (presumably) intended reaction from the threads you initiate.

I said some of your claims are legitimate. I gave the "side" that speech is not under attack here and this thread is evidence of that. Of course, you consider an imbalance of opinions in favor of the show on a *fansite* as evidence that your attempts at synthetic controversy are in danger. Nobody is deleting your threads, but people are disagreeing with your dissent. And that disagreement isn't an infringement on you, it's a fulfillment of what you're claiming to promote here. Let me clarify that by "board character", I mean everything from "Mod elections" to your admission that people here are too nice and you like to stir controversy to the current discussion. You don't think you've been doing the wannabe James Dean character for 2-3 years now?
Not at all.
In fact, I said I NEVER wanted to see "mod elections" but rather term limits, leaving the appointment of mods solely up to the admins. I didn't want the board getting cluttered up with people campaigning.
Do I sometimes take an opposing point of view when 99% of the people are on one side of an issue? Absolutely. Does that make me a "wannabe James Dean character"? I don't think so.
In fact, in this current poll I took neither side, but rather posted exactly what I've heard in private conversations with other members.
Some people (you among them) think they "know" my "hidden agenda" and what I'm "really feeling and trying to say" and read a certain emotion into my posts that just isn't there.
I am close friends in "real life" with MANY of the members here. I hang out with them in person, I talk to them on the phone, I text and IM with them, etc. We talk about many things, the show included.
When an overwhelming number of them contacted me on this subject, I didn't mention any names but rather brought it up as a topic for discussion and debate.
Why do you think I'm trying to "stir shit" for that?
Obviously if a dozen people had an opinion on what happened others are thinking about it too, right?
Don't presume to know what's going on in my head. Sometimes the written word doesn't convey someone's thoughts and moods as well as the spoken word, but to automatically think there's a diabolical slant to my writings isn't fair.

A member was chastised for speaking honestly about a sponsor
doesn't Ron himself shit on the sponsors during the live reads (IE Ashley Madison) on a daily basis?
also if someone spoke poorly or otherwise, of the sponsor's product, that would show that their advertising on the show is working doesn't it?
if the poster/listener/customer expresses dissatisfaction with the product, maybe the sponsor should be concerned as to why the poster/listener/customer is dissatisfied, not where they read the feedback.
my company constantly reads industry messages boards to see how our products are being perceived and when negative posts are made they investigate the reasoning behind the negative post and try to use the feedback constructively.
believe it or not listening to your target customers can help

I know Gvac has chosen to make present this as a black and white issue, but do people really think it's that cut a dry?
The incidents at hand
1) A member was chastised for speaking honestly about a sponsor
Yes, Casey is a member of the board, but I believe she was chastised more for speaking out against a sponsor while being married to a member of the show than anything to do with this board. Lleeder started an anti-Pro Flowers thread earlier this year, and we never heard a thing about it. The anti-Ashley Madison posts never raised a problem with the show either (other than when Matty tsk-tsked the show for doing the reads, which I think warranted a response).
2) The administration of the board was urged to change the mod quote of a member that the hosts found offensive
Urged? I heard it as a goof. It's kind of funny to have all of these awful mod quotes and someone has "a very nice girl" or whatever it was. I certainly didn't take it as something the show seriously wanted done, and I highly doubt there would have been any repercussions from the show if it wasn't.
So anyway, where does that leave us? The board has existed in a middle ground between the two extremes posited for 8.5 years. During that time, I am unaware of any time when the show has dictated that we change any content on the board, so there really isn't this draconian threat that the show will dictate what is done here. The board has existed in an unofficial capacity during that time and allowed dissenting opinions. At the same time, the board has been embraced and supported by the show. It's a balance you will rarely see on the internet, with plenty of examples where it hasn't (see Dugout Doug, FBA and the Opie & Anthony Show). So, for better or for worse, this board has been able to maintain this balance over that time period. Has something changed recently that should make us re-evaluate our position? Given the examples cited, I really don't think so. Personally, I don't think we need to decide to make an extreme shift of the board to conform to one of the poll options. I know someone will say I'm taking the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach. I'm not. I just don't see the problems that would force us to take the board one way or another.
On another note, what purpose would changing the name serve? Our google ranking? I believe google ranking is based on a whole lot more than the name of the domain. Even if we were to change the name to something not so clearly Ron & Fez, our site would still likely be at the top or near the top when doing a search for Ron & Fez, and we would most certainly still be the first message board that would come up.
And Greg, I will defend you as well. Even though I think your motivations for these threads often stem from a desire to stir up controversy on the board rather than from your own closely held beliefs, you are not anti-R&F, anti-Ron, anti-Dave, anti-Fez, etc. Anti-ronfez.net? Maybe.

Why are we worried about someone being negative towards a sponser on this board affecting the show when Hank Kingsley Whatley has 30 meetings a week with sales to please the Garden Weasel people.
If this was remotely an issue, they'd have asked JustJon and Mikeyboy to alter the site by now (at which point, they decide what they want to do).

i agree with this, but what does it matter if someone says something bad about a sponsor? it's usually because it's a shitty product or a shitty commercial. does what some random person says about a product on a message board really going to change if someone buys that product or not?

Well, you know very well that the incident you cite really was about the wife of a show member posting something negative about a sponsor and nothing to do with the board. In fact there have been other threads and posts critical of the sponsors, and there hasn't been fallout. You know this, yet you cite it anyway. 2 people have mentioned this, but you ignore it as if it hasn't been said. It's best not to let the facts get in the way of a good argument!
