I try to eat fish once a week, but price and availability usually keeps it down to about once every two weeks. I usually have catfish. LOVES ME SOME CATFISH! I've noticed lately, tilapia is just about all I can find in the sub $6 per pound price. I've never had it, so I decided to give it shot tonight.

As with all new foods, I first Googled.

Farm-raised tilapia, one of the most highly consumed fish in America, has very low levels of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids and, perhaps worse, very high levels of omega-6 fatty acids, according to new research from Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

The researchers say the combination could be a potentially dangerous food source for some patients with heart disease, arthritis, asthma and other allergic and auto-immune diseases that are particularly vulnerable to an "exaggerated inflammatory response." Inflammation is known to cause damage to blood vessels, the heart, lung and joint tissues, skin, and the digestive tract. To make matters worse...

Avoid farmed tilapia from China and Taiwan, where pollution and weak management are common. In the U.S., most tilapia are farmed in closed inland systems that guard against escapes and pollution. However, in many other countries, tilapia are often farmed in open systems where escapes and pollution are a bigger threat. Not only is my tilapia farmed in China, a look at the ingredients lists Carbon Monoxide (to preserve natural color)!!!

What... the... FUCK?!

I'm sorry Pal. I felt this way when I started looking at mercury levels in some of my favorite fish.

On the bright side, tilapia is very low in mercury.

i'm not that big of fan of tilapia, so im not that worried about this info. when i do eat fish, it's usually from the person who caught it (walleye and perch). i had some pretty fantastic calico which was given to my grandma caught in a local lake for lunch today.

Tilapia is disturbingly cheap, as far as I live inland. It's also so easy to make not taste like fish. I guess it is too good to be true; the affordable and tasty is not often the best for ya.<p>

Farm raised tilapia are often fed the downstream flowing poop of farmed hybrid striped bass.

Carbon Monoxide is also used in packaged meats to help them maintain their red color.

I know its all in good health but how could you not feel like a douche after having this conversation with your butcher.
If you don’t like the idea of eating meat treated with carbon monoxide, talk to the manager of the meat department in your local grocery. Ask him if he sells meat with modified atmosphere packaging. If the answer is yes, let him know you’re going elsewhere to purchase meat products.

Tilapia doesn't even taste good...no redeeming value whatsoever.

There's only a dollar or so difference per pound between Tilapia and Salmon on Fresh Direct. I gladly spend the extra money.

Isn't tilapia supposed to be the worst fish ever? It's just garbage.

They must bring in the pressure washer when you go in to get your colon cleansed.

When I buy something as delicate as fish, money is no object to me. It is not like its going to break the bank anyway! Beef is like $5 a pound. If fish is $7 a pound, it is still pretty cheap. Who eats a pound of anything either? Since fish is something that has the potential to make you sick, I do not even look at price. Go for freshness and you will be fine. I usually get branzini. I like tilipia, have you ever had orange roughy?
If you want frozen, try the frozen fish in Trader Joe's.

Here's a big guess what to you people trashing Tilapia preserved with carbon monoxide. CO is in almost all frozen fish-----I saw it in salmon, tilapia, cod, almost all frozen fish at the market today. So, let's see how crappy you think CO tilapia is now......LOL. And also hot shots...........CO keeps the "red" in most red meat. It's used everywhere and especially in restaurant meat and fish. Don't be so clueless.

The carbon monoxide statement was just a footnote to a whole list of reasons not to eat tilapia. Don't be so clueless.

Hey tilapia-balls, it is not used "everywhere". A local butcher does not usually process his product with CO, slap it on a meat maxi pad and shrink wrap it in low-grade plastic. Don't be so clueless.
