View Full Version : I Got Into My First Ever Car Accident

I've driven over 750,000 miles in about 12 years, and this was the first time I've ever been the driver in an accident. When it happened, I called 911 because I had no idea what to do. I had to ask them for advice.
I got rear ended, and its only a little damage, but my car is a lease so it needs to be fixed perfectly. And I was on my way to the dentist, where I was to get 4 fillings, but the pain was so unbearable after the first two, so I made the dentist stop. Today has been a terrible day.
So, back to the accident part; what are you supposed to do in an accident? I got the guy's info, but I didn't get any witnesses or anything. I filed the claim with my insurance company and everything seemed ok. But are you supposed to call the cops in a minor accident?
Now I have to drive around in a dented car for a while. Boo.

Always have a police report. Always report it to your insurance.
Also, contact the person who hit your car's insurance as they are likely at fault.
Edit: Oh, and sorry about the bad day!

Firstly, glad to hear youre ok.
If the guy who rear ended you seems trustworthy, a mutiual exchange of info (Name, License #, Plate number, Phone Number, etc) should suffice. You can take the car to your shop, get an estimate, and call the guy with the price. If he agrees to pay, fine. If he doesnt, then you can go to your local precinct and fill out an accident report; in NYS you have 10 days to do this.
However, your leasing company may require a police report no matter what.
Check with them.

You should have called the cops and had a report filed. When you turn this into your insurance, the report will come in very handy when trying to prove that you're not at fault. Your insurance company will then take the report to the other guy's insurance and ask for damages, and it's very unlikely that they'll put up much of a fight if there is written documentation.

When I called 911, they specifically said that I didn't need the cops to come unless "the other guy is trying to fight you". I called my insurance agency and they said because of the location of the damage, the other guy would be at fault. And that the insurance company would take care of everything. So far, its been pretty pleasant.
I didn't get angry at the other guy or anything, either. The situation sucked, he thought I moved, I didn't. He hit me. He drives an Audi, too. So he's worse off repair wise.

I left the house early today and everything, instead of incredibly late like I always do. Stupid punctuality ruining cars!
And an ambulance caused it all (we were trying to move out of the way). Stupid emergency workers.
You're in Mass so once you file the report yours and his insurance takes care of the rest

glad you're ok & sorry about your teeth but you did the right thing in calling the police. especially with a lease. it would suck to have to pay to fix it yourself.

I also wouldn't advise the leasing company of the accident, otherwise they'd try to nickel and dime you for fees, like an extensive wear and tear fee.
Have the police report ready if the leasing company comes after you AFTER you turn the car in, but I wouldn't say anything to them right now.

Wow, this is the wierdest thing....i got into an accident this morning arount 8:45 (about a block away from my destination....doh!)
Anyway, the other driver's car ends up plowing into some pole (she's ok) on a city sidewalk in Newark! Luckily no one was on the sidewalk at the time....could have been real messy.
The craziest thing is that her hood goes up in flames within seconds of impact....i got her out and the fire went down....but i was amazed at how quickly a fire like that can just ignite after impact.
