Finding old hard drives.. and looking through them.

I found a hard drive this weekend sitting in a dumpster, since it was in the trash it seemed prudent to pick it up, hook it up to a usb drive, and root through it.

It makes me scared to ever throw a hard drive out with out trashing it first.

So far I have figured out who the hard drive belongs to, found out her name and birthday, where she lives, and information about her family. Also her AIM screen name and chat logs.

This is even too creepy for me. Seriously.

I guess you should never throw out a hard drive, ever, with out destroying it.

I remember when I moved into my place, the previous owner left an old PC there so I did the same thing. He had trace logs on his girl's chat and old pics and stuff. I got bored and threw it out.

I got an old computer from a friend, he thought it was fried in a storm.

hooked up the HD year or so later, as it was a good one and I wanted to see if it worked.

There were various documents, music, and then a hidden folder with porn in it. I flipped through the porn, and found another hidden folder with his wifes name on it....opened it, and found pictures and short movies of her. Then found more of them fucking.

I wiped the HD and used it.

This is why if a HD dies, I still drill holes in it, burn it, then toss it in a random dumpster.

I got a computer from work just a few days ago. It was used in a library at my university.

So, it was a public computer with many files on the desktop.

I got a ton of papers from many undergrad and grad classes as well as AIM logs.

Did the same thing and cleaned the hard drive.

When I worked in research a lot of our data was sensitive the method Moe explained was the only accepted way to render a HD useless.

I read about doing that online somewhere, I guess that is one of the industry accepted ways to destroy the actual discs in there.

I also unload like half a fucking can of cutting oil into the holes as the bit is sinking in the hard drive case. Fuck it, I want NO ONE to know what was on there. Not because there's anything illegal or really even that secret, just because I know there's guys like Jezo looking to flip through my personal porn collection at the time, family photos and Photoshop projects.

Everyone knows someone with a hand drill and vise or the more direct drill press. Just fucking sink holes through the entire case and creepy fucks like Jezo won't be jacking off to your grandma's birthday pics.
