View Full Version : Denver Nuggets vs. WWE

The WWE has the Pepsi Center in Denver booked for Raw a week from tonight. That's the same night the Nuggets are hosting the Lakers in game 4 of the Western Conference Finals. Who should get the building? The WWE booked the place months in advance and have already sold 10,000 tix. As Vinny Mac put it, the Nuggets owner didn't have enough faith in his team to hold the date. I agree with Vince, give it to the wrestlers.

Wow, that is pretty shitty that they booked an event during an event during a date that the basketball team that plays there could have been in playoffs. Is that lack of any real scheduling or compete lack in the abilities of the team?

Either way, they should give it to the WWE for having booked the place but they'll probably give it to the stupid basketball team. Because everyone in the area will suddenly care just because their crappy little team is in the playoffs, then forget next year when they go on a losing streak again.

05-18-2009, 04:22 PM
I was reading the Associated Press article on it.

Sounds like WWE actually has a pretty good case for it. They re-confirmed the date last month, and signed a contract for the arena.

This is the NBA's fault, unless they have something specifically stated in the arena rental contract about giving preference to the home teams that play there.

They're either going to have to reschedule, get sued, or settle somehow.

Obviously this needs to be settled in a contract-on-a-pole match.

Or Vince could give the Nuggets the building, and then have the whole Raw locker room do a run-in during the final quarter.

The owner of the Nuggets also owns the arena but the WWE seems to have a good case. How about having the wrestling as the half time act? Or combine the two somehow, the refs in both sports suck so it seems like a nice match.

The fact that the NBA plays music during the play is one of the reasons I hate it. They act like people cannot be entertained by dribbling the ball upcourt and need secondary entertainment at the same time. Sickening.

I'd say cut a deal with the arena and tape RAW the night before, but WWE has two shows on Sunday and they don't seem like big venues.

But WWE should get the arena. Didn't Yanni fuck up a hockey game recently? He deserved the arena too even though he blows.

I haven't read anything about this, but every post season ticket & series I've seen in the last 15+ years have been marked with somthing to the effect of "DATE & TIME TO BE ANNOUNCED/DETERMINED." So I don't see why it would be a big deal to bump the basketball game a day in either direction.

Shit, in the NFL playoffs they never know more than a week in advance when the next round is going to be (until the Superbowl) so they can cherry-pick the bigger market or more storied franchise team into the Sunday at 1pm spot, etc. They've obviously known about this conflict for more than a week, what's the problem?

The Jays
05-18-2009, 09:43 PM
This is the arena management's fault, clear and simple. The WWE has the arena that night, not only because they booked last year, but also because their business requires a live event to occur at 9pm EST on Monday night. If the NBA and the Nuggets have a problem with that, find another fucking arena.

Umm, no they can't. Raw is a live televised event and requires the arena audience as part of its show.

And this isn't something that gets resolved by popularity contest. The WWE, like it or not, attracts sell out crowds at every venue they perform at, especially for Monday Night Raw. It is a live televised event broadcast on the USA network, and they can't just do their "play" at the local high school. The arena would be subject to a ridiculous lawsuit if they make the WWE cancel their show for Monday night.

MagillaGorillaz
05-18-2009, 10:28 PM
That has got to be the toughest job scheduling an arena like that. Not only do you have the Nuggets, but you could have had the Avalanche playing into the year as well.
If only the NBA would play a playoff game on Saturday none of this would happen. They waited three days this past round to play a game 7, just because they felt like they wouldn't get the ratings on tv. What day of the week is game 3 scheduled?

Raw does NOT sell out every venue they go to. I would say they are probably at 70 percent capacity. Don't forget, with how backstage is set up, they're cutting off 20-25% of the arena. Plus, from the business of sports economics, the gate that a Nuggets West. Conf. final playoff game would bring it would be much, much more than a Raw taping.

It's bad business for Kroenke to do this and not ask for special dispensation from Stern when there's another event scheduled, but it is the playoffs.

Now, we just need a black and white slow-mo version of Hennig hitting the half-court shot. The WWE: Where Amazing Happens
