I don't know if this has been mentioned, but unless it has changed you can switch out of Grand Jury duty to Petit Jury; When I lived in Brooklyn I said it was a hardship to sit for the mandatory 5 weeks (or whatever it was), and they said they can switch me to regular (petit) jury, but I would not be allowed to defer from that. I wound up sitting on regular duty for 1 day.

this double booking thing happened at my uncles funeral. the rectory people had double booked the church. they schedules his funeral mass at the same time this catholic school was going to hold its "bledding of the Senior yr rings" ceremony.

when we got to the church, we see some high school kids lined up getting ready to inside. the church made us scramble to find another place to hold the funeral mass because the catholic school that was having the ceremony was the church's school

edit: and my uncle was a patron of that church. he went to mass there and gave generously.
there were A LOT of angry people that day. we asked if they could postpone the ring ceremony until the funeral mass was over. the church people were not hearing it.
