I hate this band so much. Not only is it crappy music but there is something about Dave Matthews that I can't stand. I have read and seen interviews. I just heard his voice on a XM ad and I needed to get this off my chest.
Is there anything redeeming about this band? Am I missing something? I would join a flock of Parrotheads following Jimmy Buffett's Hard Rock Cafe tour rather than sitting through one Dave Matthews concert.

Leave Dave alone. I still like them. :flush:
I think it's more nostalgia for me because I got into them early in high school and my friends and I went to tons of his shows.

As soon as i saw this thread it made me think of seeing their song on some XM channel and thinking, "God, this has to be one of the most dated bands i've ever heard". I was going to start a thread about it & as soon as i saw this one it made me think of it again.
Yeah, they're terrible.

Different strokes for different folks. I've been to a Dave concert (didn't care for it that much as the crowd was much younger than myself) and have some of his cds.
The cousin of a friend of mine gives swimming lessons and a few summers ago she was asked to go to this house in the Hamptons to give lessons to some kids. She shows up at the house and the people at the pool said to hold on, they would go get the owner. All of a sudden this guy walks out, extends his hand to my friend's cousin and says "Hi, my name is David. My friends call me Dave."

I also picture preppy frat boys as the typical fan but, hey, I might be wrong.
I know I started this thread by saying how much I hate DMB but I am open to other opinions. I thought the Grateful Dead were shit until a fan played me some Europe '72 recordings and I changed my mind. Is there a good DMB bootleg that I should try? I prefer liking music to hating it and I am prepared to eat my words if there is some Dave Matthews Band music that doesn't make me want to vomit.

you're not wrong about the typical fans ... I've seen 22 shows and will NEVER sit on the lawn because most (not all) fans on the lawn are young kids there to get fucked up first, see a show second. I did it once to save money and now if I can't get good seats (where you're still pressing your luck), I won't go.

I liked them when I was in high school and they first came out, and then I outgrew them by the time I went off to college. I can't really say I actively "hate" the band: I just don't listen to them anymore and have no desire to do so. They're not really hard to avoid at this point, so it works out for everyone.

One of my best friends saw Ozzfest and a DMB show at the same venue within the same week. She initially was a bigger DMB fan than an Ozzy fan, but the assholes at the Matthews show completely turned her off the band forever.

Part of me thinks it's a shame it's like that and wishes that they weren't there, but there wouldn't be a summer tour every year without them. They're Dave's bread and butter unfortunately.

But they're such good musicians maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!
I know, seriously! What a terrible reason to like a band- musicianship!
I don't really get Dave Matthews Band hate. I like them, and have seen them a bunch of times, most recently the first half of their Jazz Fest set in New Orleans. They frustrate me at times, though, b/c while it's nice that they have a different set list every night, sometimes it can lead to a stinker of a show if Dave's in a particularly down or reflective mood. The new sax player was absolutely terrific (coming from someone who played for 14 years), I've always liked the violin player, they had some local NO horns sit in, and Dave and Tim Reynolds work well together. With all the complaints today about electronic, over-produced music, and "bands" who don't play their own music, I would think a group of guys who play really well, change up their sets, improvise, and put on a good show would be welcome.
It's one thing if you're just not into that style of music. I'm not into death metal (sorry, Moe), opera, or gangsta rap, but I can't say I have an actual hatred for anyone who performs in those genres. It seems extreme to hate them, so the only reason I can come up with for it is because they're so popular, which is what leads to the "too cool for the room" comments. Sorry, paulisded, there is plenty of validity for that argument on this board.
Lastly, as a music fan, I think it's a pretty weak argument to judge a band's musical talent or validity based on who goes to the shows.

I started this thread because I am curious about what you all think about band hatred. there are tons of bands I don't like but DMB really annoys me for some reason. to be honest, I don't know their music that well and am open to hearing recommended stuff. maybe it's just that I really can't stand East Coast idiot frat boys and I just picture DMB as their choice of music. Now I'm sure I will get the accusations of being too cool for the room because I avoid preppy frat boys.

Ok, check out the album "Crash." It's 12 years old, but it's still my favorite. I haven't heard the new album yet, so I can't recommend anything off of it.
For individual tunes, I recommend:
"Too Much" and "Tripping Billies"
"Crush"
"Grey Street" and "Bartender"
"Ants Marching"
"#34" for change of pace
Others will recommend different tunes, I'm sure. I'm by no means an uber-fan.

Sure, we've been tooling on their fans, but that really has nothing to do with the fact that I don't enjoy the band. Yes, they're great musicians, but quite often the best players make the most boring music. Take the 70's prog rock scene, or the 80's guitar shredders. I'd rather hear Keith Richard's relatively simple, riff-oriented playing than a 20 minute solo by anybody.
I tried to like DMB when they first appeared in the early 90's, as I had a lot of friends who enjoyed them, and I sold lots of their music at my record store. But I just could never get into them. But who cares? I may rant and rave about what I like or don't like, but it really doesn't matter if others agree with me. Different people have different tastes, and life would be really boring if we all liked the same thing.

I crashed a DMB concert eleven years ago. It was sold out and only my two friends had tickets, and I think I was broke. When the band started I climbed a fence and dropped in. Then I ran across the lawn just in case security saw me, and I took off my shirt, and blended in. Thing is I don't remember any of the show cause I got too wasted. Brilliant, eh?

The thing you don't like about Dave Matthews is that he is as dumb as a tree stump. I loved him, and I mean loved him for a very long time, then I saw him on and episode of Politically Incorrect and he stuttered and stumbled and couldn't really get a coherent thought out of his face, and to make the whole thing worse was the subject was Farm Aid and other causes that he supports.

I think he writes great melodies... but maybe his voice bugs ya out? The sweet, mouth-jiggly way he sings? Kind of breathy, high, precious and tweety. It's also a bit of a muppet monster voice. Maybe it doesn't sound sincere to ya?
some of the pop songs with big horn parts drive me batty...
I think I'd slide Dave in with Huey Lewis...good drivin music and then all the sudden you whip it out the window... :) and then later kind of wish you still had it
do i need to clarify what's being whipped out the window or should I just make room for jokes
