Its amazing people bitch about the ratings for all of their favorite radio shows yet somehow accept that they are right about soccer ratings.

Problem is their ratings are just as shitty, if a village has a TV they assume that there are 30 people sitting around watching that one TV showing soccer. Its bullshit but of course soccer is in the rest of the world so americans have to be wrong.

Either way soccer is horrible to watch.

Sometimes it has to do with the quality of the meat or peculiarities of the cooking process. Really good beef is usually better if you lean to the Rare side, since it allows the natural flavors of the meat to come out. Cooking meat toward the Well side tends to make all meat taste more similar.

At least that is what I have been told by those in the know. I usually order medium rare unless the server suggests otherwise (due to the preparation being "special").

No it wasn't. I have studied the Civil War extensively, and although slavery became a bigger issue near the end of the war and has been a favorite focus of many historians, the war did not start purely over slavery. There are a TON of issues that were involved, although they are mostly glossed over in the general history courses you take in high school and college 100 courses.

I'm a die-hard Nascar fan (was in Charlotte this past weekend for the debacle that was supposed to be the Coke 600), and it sickens me that Nascar has turned a blind eye to these confederate wannabes for so long. it's not a regional southern-only sport anymore, and if they don't bathe themselves of this stigma they're never going to become as successful as they could be in the non-south regions. I'm not saying ban the shirts, but I agree with the view of Fezzie that they should be vocal about how they don't agree with the confederate flag and what it stands for, and that they should try to distance themselves from the crowd that still clings to the flag, even if it's their most die-hard fanbase.

Is it doubted, then, that the plan I propose, if adopted, would shorten the war, and thus lessen its expenditure of money and of blood? Is it doubted that it would restore the national authority and national prosperity, and perpetuate both indefinitely? Is it doubted that we here--Congress and Executive--can secure its adoption? Will not the good people respond to a united, and earnest appeal from us? Can we, can they, by any other means, so certainly, or so speedily, assure these vital objects? We can succeed only by concert. It is not "can any of us imagine better?" but, "can we all do better?" The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise -- with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country.

Fellow-citizens, we cannot escape history. We of this Congress and this administration, will be remembered in spite of ourselves. No personal significance, or insignificance, can spare one or another of us. The fiery trial through which we pass, will light us down, in honor or dishonor, to the latest generation. We say we are for the Union. The world will not forget that we say this. We know how to save the Union. The world knows we do know how to save it. We -- even we here -- hold the power, and bear the responsibility. In giving freedom to the slave, we assure freedom to the free -- honorable alike in what we give, and what we preserve. We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth. Other means may succeed; this could not fail. The way is plain, peaceful, generous, just -- a way which, if followed, the world will forever applaud, and God must forever bless.

I have taken 4 advanced undergrad and graduate courses specifically on the Civil War and a half dozen other courses RE: US political, military, and social history that incorporated the Civil War era. The reasons given for the war were far more varied than just slavery.

I am not saying that slavery was NOT part of the issue - it ended up being pretty substantial by the end of the conflict and during recovery. However, it was far from the only issue and nowhere near as important at the start of the war as it was at the end.

There has also been a lot of revision to Civil War era history over the last 20 years as the focus on social history has become more prevalent.
