Rivera's loss saves backup infielder's life..
By Michael Kay MSG Network.com
Mariano Rivera is a deeply religious man. He has been searching all off-season for a reason why God would have him fail in his job in the final game of the World Series. Rivera wanted to understand why God would allow him to blow a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning of the seventh game of the World Series. It took Rivera two months but sources tell us he finally heard something that helped him make some sense of his highly unusual failure.
It seems that when the Yankee players headed back out to Arizona with a 3-2 lead in games over the Diamondbacks, many of them made travel plans to get to their off-season homes once they got back to New York with what they felt would be their fourth straight World Series title. All of the players factored in the requisite ticker tape parade, which would have been held on Monday if they won Game Six and on Wednesday if they won Game Seven. Tuesday was out because it was election day.
The players also realized that with a win would come many autograph signing opportunities where they could pick up serious cash for scribbling their name a couple thousand times over a few days. The biggest names and the richest players do this, simply finding it hard to turn down such easy money.
Well, Enrique Wilson, the Yankees' back-up infielder, took all of the above into account and made his plane reservation back to the Dominican Republic. But when the Yankees lost that Game Seven heartbreaker, Wilson took an earlier flight early the next week. If they had won the series and Rivera had closed out the game, Wilson would have retained his original booking and been on the flight that crashed right after takeoff into a Queens neighborhood. There were no survivors.
Losing that game is obviously something that will be with Rivera for awhile but knowing that Wilson would not be here if he had indeed performed to his usual level helps Rivera to cope with his failure easier and also to better understand God's plan. Suddenly, to Rivera, there is a reason for what happened and perhaps a bit less heartbreak.
