Tony Scott: Yes, Carl Rinsch is going to do the prequel to Alien. He’s one of our directors at our company

Why can't they just leave well enough alone ??
The Predator vs Aliens movies have been nothing but crap. Fun crap....but crap nonetheless.
Why make a prequel to something thats a sci-fi classic ? Where's the fucking sense in that ? Move the fucking franchise forward and make a new good movie.

Those two Alien prequels? Ridley Scott tells us more! (http://scifiwire.com/2010/06/those-two-alien-prequels.php#more)
At the Los Angeles Times' Hero Complex film festival, Scott gave a Q&A in between screenings of Alien and Blade Runner. He told the audience more details about his plans for a new Alien. He'd already said his first prequel will be about the "space jockey," that huge statue Kane (John Hurt) stumbles upon in the first film. It looks like the carcass of an alien giant.
"I think beneath that carcass isn't a carcass," Scott teased on June 13 in Hollywood. "That's a suit, but inside the suit is a being."
Whoa! So once we meet that being, we're not going to want to stop at just one movie. "What we want to do is try and squeeze in two prequels, because if you explain who he was and where did he come from, then that will deal with the savagery of this version, which is pretty savage," Scott continued. "Then you may want to find out where they came from, so you may want to go to the place where his people come from."

I'd be willing to check this out, but there's no damn reason to make this. I'd like to know that story, but there's just very little chance that this will be executed well and I don't want to see Aliens tainted by another shitty spin-off/sequel.

Well, it seems that Ridley Scott's Alien prequel project is now dead.
Instead, it's evolved into a more original project.
Ridley Scott Directing Prometheus (http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=29898)
After months of rumour, speculation, whispers, sort-of news and denials aplenty, 20th Century Fox has finally come out and announced via Twitter that Ridley Scott’s next stab at science fiction will be called Prometheus and that Noomi Rapace has signed on to star.
This is the point where you raise your eyebrows and wonder what happened to the long-gestating Alien prequel. Turns out, this is what that film evolved into. After a lot of development, Scott has decided to move away from the history of the Xenomorphs and make something original.
I think this is good. The Alien movies might as well be laid to rest.

The trailer is supposed to come out on Thursday. But 20th Century Fox has released a trailer for the trailer.
And what else has Scott said about the movie? To recap, he's said (http://filmophilia.com/2011/12/17/interview-ridley-scott-talks-prometheus-giger-beginning-of-man-and-original-alien/) that it'll explore the distant origins of the human race and the alien element of said origins. But everyone's far more interested in Prometheus delving into the background of the Space Jockeys, the biggest mystery in Alien lore. Though they're possibly responsible for the whole mess of acid-blooded, chest-bursting monstrosities, official Alien canon shows the Jockeys only in the form of a single giant skeleton lying in the derelict spaceship that housed all the xenomorph eggs.
Scott's also said that the original H.R. Giger xenomorph itself won't appear in Prometheus, though anonymous sources have reported seeing actors in xenomorph costumes on the set. And the trailer-for-the-trailer shows Michael Fassbender, as an inquisitive android, handling a beaker that couldn't possibly contain an Alien-brand face-hugger. Even if there's no actual xenomorph, we can still hope for the real story (and perhaps the proper name) of the Space Jockeys. No longer will we have to settle for contradictory comics and novels where they look like sad old elephants.

speculation about the five most important shots in the Prometheus trailer.
<TABLE class="image center" border=0 width=640 align=center><TBODY><TR><TD>http://www.toplessrobot.com/prometheus1.gif</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>First of all, there's this shot of a chamber that holds a giant relief of a human face, plus neat little rows of coffin-shaped objects that recreated the egg chamber from Alien. There was no such stone face in Alien, but this ties into Scott's description of Prometheus as dealing with "engineers of space" and the origins of the human race. I hope that the movie's take on the idea is better than Alien vs. Predator's or the typical History Channel special.
<TABLE class="image center" border=0 width=640 align=center><TBODY><TR><TD>http://www.toplessrobot.com/prometheus2.gif</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Scott also promised a good look at the Space Jockeys, and here's the most revealing scene in the trailer. Of course, Scott's also alluded to the giant husk of the Space Jockey being a suit, so it's an open question as to whether that thing on the table is a helmet or a skull. Either way, I like how that piece of the title seems to give it a snout. <TABLE class="image center" border=0 width=640 align=center><TBODY><TR><TD>http://www.toplessrobot.com/prometheus3.gif</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>At two separate points in the trailer, we see crew members clearly infected by something: one's screaming as though he just threw up inside his helmet, and the other's panting in terror. Both seem connected to another interesting shot, this one showing a disfigured man in a spacesuit attacking unmutated comrades. It's the closest the trailer gets to showing an actual monster.
<TABLE class="image center" border=0 width=640 align=center><TBODY><TR><TD>http://www.toplessrobot.com/prometheus4.jpg</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>This scene of a crashed ship might not look particularly special, but once flipped around it matches the tail of the derelict ship seen in Alien. But is this the same vessel, or just another craft built by the same race? And is all of this taking place on the same planet, LV-426, where this whole Alien mess started?
<TABLE class="image center" border=0 width=640 align=center><TBODY><TR><TD>http://www.toplessrobot.com/prometheus5.gif</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>This is by far the most interesting shot in the trailer: a scene of the Space Jockey's chamber, complete with recliner and telescope-like cockpit. Note the bald guy on the right. He appears to be wearing a space suit without a helmet, and he's glimpsed in a wheelchair elsewhere in the trailer. But he's also rather large next to the rest of the set. Wasn't the original Space Jockey (and, by extension, its furniture) much larger than a normal human?
<TABLE class="image center" border=0 width=640 align=center><TBODY><TR><TD>http://www.toplessrobot.com/prometheus6.gif</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Yes, it was. Either the trailer's shot is a trick of perspective, or there's some plot twist at play. And we'll all have fun arguing about this and more in the six months before Prometheus hits theaters.

Fantastic. A great movie that I thought had a really engrossing plot and storyline. I only wished Ridley Scott had not used some worn thin scares and instead developed the characters better. There are only a couple that really stand out. The rest might as well been wearing red shirts. Absolutely stunning in 3D IMAX.

I thought it was completely terrible. It wasn't scary, it wasn't exciting, the plot was a cluttered mess and you can tell exactly where they realized they had written themselves into a corner and gave up on it. There was way too much tell and not show with very integral plot points. And the Alien tie ins were shamelessly tacked on. You could take them out and this movie wouldn't be changed in the slightest. Outside of Michael Fassbender there was nothing good here.

I think this movie was all beauty & no brains. One of the most beautifully shot movies I seen in a while, & definitely worth seeing in 3D .But the script was horrible. Scientists who act like redshirts from Star Trek . Plot holes galore . The only saving grace in the movie was Michael Fassbender , but then, he's been good in pretty much everything he's done . Idris Elba also turns in a pretty good(small) supporting role. It's one of those see it and forget it movies, though I think it SHOULD be seen on a big screen .

I see some of your points, but I don't think the Alien tie-ins were tacked on, rather I thought the overall story of the Alien beginnings was actually the best part of the movie. The untold story that we just get a glimpse of a much larger story. It was essential to the Alien story, although the movie stood on its own as a good sci-fi flick.
The characters and their stories was where it fell apart. A big problem was that there were too many. With an exception of a few, the others you just didn't care about. There were too many moments highlighted with dramatic music or unusual behavoir that gave me the impression that I was supposed to be wowed, but I just didn't care.

I liked it a lot, but it had some big problems. My biggest issue was the second act where you shift suddenly from a slow, sci fi ensemble to a single pov body horror movie, then for the end you jump back out into the slow, sci fi drama. I wanted the slow sci fi drama and it's what I expected from Ridley Scott. They're going to extend the movie by up to 30 minutes for DVD, and I'll bet that solves a lot of the pacing issues.
Otherwise, Holloway was awful. Like a headscratchingly bad actor and a shitty character. I actually knew where his arch was going because I thought there's no way they would've stuck with this actor if this conclusion isn't the one that's ultimately drawn.
It was a little confusing but after you sit with it a bit I think it settles out.
There's an article on io9 with some questions about the movie for Damon lindelof.

An amazing film. I really don't understand how people do not like it. A brief look at some so-called plot holes being griped about really just seem to be people thinking that this was a direct prequel to the Alien film, when in fact it is just an occurrence in the same universe, which Ridley Scott has been more than clear about since the beginning.

I just watched this movie and gave it my full attention.
What a mess.
It's probably one of the best LOOKING movies of all time. It had great atmosphere too. Nice pace.
But holy shit this movie was needlessly elaborate and hopelessly confusing.
The basic PREMISE of the movie is paper thin.
Why in the fuck would that old man even think for one second that these creators of the human race would, somehow, be able to grant us immortality?? What a crazy illogical leap that is!
Okay. Fine. A crew is assembled, and they head off to some strange planet to look for the origins of life on our planet (and perhaps the universe?!?!!) Fine.
They go to the planet and immediately find, pretty much, EXACTLY what they're looking for. They have visual proof of humanoid creatures and a massive statue of what is a human face... and Halloway is PISSED that the mission was a failure?? That's absurd.
Why would David take one of those vases? What could possibly be his motivation for doing that at all, much less... without telling anybody? (nitpick: why was he carrying an empty bag that was conveniently the EXACT size needed to steal a space vase?)
Why would David poison Halloway? That was completely out of left field.
What was the deal with those holograms of engineers running away from the temple?? Was that ever even addressed? If so... I don't recall.
I could go on, but... whatever. The movie is old and I'm sure you guys don't remember the details.
This was a mess of a movie that had a ton of potential. Damn it.
Oh. And why do the engineers want to kill us?? Why even invite us to their planet? Why provide so many maps??
okay. Now I'm done.
