I last did this about 5 years ago. Decided to do it again.

What? I walked about a mile strech of the Delaware River on the Jersey side and see what I can find on the beach.

Area: About 3 mile north of the Philly Airport.

And these are only the "interesting" shit I saw. I could've easily added 100's of more pictures if I added in all the juice jugs, soda bottles, tires, potato chip bags, etc etc etc. The entire coastline looks like it borders a landfill.

Disgusting isn't it? No wonder there is an island of garbage forming in the Pacific. Nothing like going for a swim and having a tampon applicator float by. And that barrel that says "test specimen" on the side: WTF?? I hope you didn't get too close to that.

It is. Here are some of the ones I took roughly 5 years ago. I posted these before on FBA a few times I think. Same stretch of beach. It's really sad cause it's a beautiful coastline otherwise until you see all the garbage.

You really see results for oh say 24 hrs and then the river simply fills in the garbage voids in a matter of hours. It's a cool thing to do none-the-less, but it's upsetting to see it reversed in a matter of minutes.

Oh and Styxx, can you go back and get that "Wild Beauty Honey" and that scooter wheel.

And damn, you might as well add mud to those pics and label it Susquehanna River. No different in terms of trash content.

Is it an issue simply caused by littering or it an issue that also stems from the lack of well managed waste management?

Exactly. They do beach clean ups like 3 times summer and within weeks it looks like a landfill again.

And damn, you might as well add mud to those pics and label it Susquehanna River. No different in terms of trash content.

Sweet! We should get these rivers together on a date!!

But seriously. Beach cleanups are great but this shit will never end. State and local officials are the only ones who can seriously keep it clean by preventing it from being dumped in the first place.

Both. Kids party along these shorelines because trails run the length of it in rural areas. Which also is an invitation to illegal dumping of garbage. Then factor in shitty boaters, rain runoff, wind driven trash from the cities that ends up in the river. It's sad, I'm not hardcore environmentalist, but this basic concept of keeping nature clean annoys me. It's a really nice place to just chill and relax other wise while enjoying the scenery.

Styckx sums it up with one simple word, dumping. For some reason people think it's easier to dump shit into the nearest river or creek versus simply disposing of trash the right way. Litter is surely (meaning small dumps versus a container of shit) not helping, but it's mainly scums that dump into any body of water a la Homer in the Simpsons Movie. I'm sure there are more avenues as to where the shit comes from, but these are two big ones. People are literally garbage.

styckx
06-02-2009, 05:58 PM
Yup. Illegal dumping is the #1 reason. I said it earlier, but what I shot was just individual odd ball items. That first pic that is just a cluster of random crap is pretty much what the entire shoreline looks like. Not exaggerating either. I'm sure the Susquehanna is the same way.

The fucked up part is, people fish these waters and eat the fish. I met Rob today who was fishin cat fish. Yes, he was saving this to eat later.

Wouldn't you think that the local municipalities would do more to ensure the waste be disposed of in a manner that doesn't result in the pollution of our waterways?

I know this is a problem everywhere but, it can't be on individuals alone.

Individuals are the worst offenders. Local municipalities do not have the budget to monitor waterways. The trash I photographed today could have come from local dumping, up North from Trenton, North Philly. Who knows?

Like I said, most of the illegal dumping is from locals who know hidden areas along the shore line. ie: Dirt roads, trails etc. The occasional washing machine or fridge isn't uncommon either. People just don't give a fuck and will dump whatever, anywhere if it saves them 5 minutes or 5 dollars of their lives.

I've seen cars, all types of appliances, dead animals (meaning former pets), shreaded papers, hospital equipment....you name it.

I live out here in North Jersey now, and there is this side loop entrance from River Road unto Route 3 and it's always covered in dumped trash. It's not the river, but it amazing how much shit gets dumped there overnight and it's the same mentality that lends people to dump in the middle of the night in areas of low traffic. It's a fucking shame and it's amazing how little humanity one must have to go through these actions. I can't even throw a paper straw wrapper on the ground, let alone dump to save a buck or two.

I wasn't suggesting that towns or cities monitor waterways. Instead, I was thinking that if the municipalities were better equipped to handle the waste made by the citizens that there would be less debris in the shores.

In Buffalo, there is a system where homeowners are provided once monthly (for free) to take items to the dump and/or recycling center. This seems to be a decent idea.

However, given the size of Buffalo in comparison to the size of the cities on the Delaware River, this might not work as well unless other cities nearby were on board with such an idea.

Oh, they are equipped just fine, ESPECIALLY in New Jersey. New Jersey is hard fucking core about recycling and you can set near anything out on your curb and they will take it. The problem comes from the amount of stuff they will take.

For example, let's say I replace 4 tires on my car. My city only allows 2 tires per week to be disposed of. It's not big companies, it's random individual locals and small businesses who do most of the dumping cause they generate a large amount of waste but don't want to pony up the $$ to have it properly disposed of. (Paying for a company like Waste Management etc to come and get it)

That really sucks Styckx. Where my property is we have a natural creek that runs through it. Even in drought conditions it will feed itself. Yet, near a bridge that goes over it people decide to dump their beer cans, tires, etc right at the point it widens. Last year we caught 3 kids drinking and dumping their cans in the creek, I held them at bay while my buddy let all the air out of their 4 wheeler's tires. It was the least we could do to get our point across.

Dumping sucks.

Everytime I go, there are actually people doing recreational shit. It's the fucking Delaware river for Christ sakes. I've even seen people swim in it. It looks nice till you see all the oil tankers, trash, and refinery's that border it.
