Heading home from lunch today I hit and killed a dog. I was traveling along safely when I saw a dachsand like dog ahead running along the side of the road and I just KNEW he was going to veer out into the street which he did and I hit him.
I went back the dog was dead. It had a collar and tags but no name or # I could call. I moved him to the side of the road and have felt like shit the rest of the day
Its gotta be someones pet.
Sucks.

Oof. That's gotta be the worst feeling.

At least you don't have to break the news to the children about how Scout went on the big car chase with all his friends.

ooof, that sucks.

Doc, why not slow down though if you "just knew" he was possibly going to run out into the road. I've had this happen to me as well, but I slowed down and ended up grabbing the pooch and calling the number on it's tags. I'm not blaming you doc, and hindsight is annoying I know, but when you see a house dog / any dog running along the roadside it's usually a good idea to not only take note but prepare.

Hell, this even happened to one of my pups at a family gathering in which the fucking douche father in-law of my girl's family literally was seen just letting my dog out the front door. I swear if he was hit I would have fucking kicked the living shit out of him. He gets annoyed at parties bc of all the kids (even though it was a kid's birthday party) and dogs bc we all bring them along. The place has a HUGE yard and the dogs and kids have a blast.

and besides, maybe the poor dog was bored or frustrated w/ his living situation. maybe his girlfriend got knocked up by the Dobie next door.

Thats awful,

I have only hit one persons pet in my life and I felt like shit, though there is not much you can do if peoples pets are running loose.

I have run over wild animals (indeed possums are a target) and I don't feel bad.

My dogs know the limits of the property but they cross of course, while doing dog stuff like chasing something.

I feel for you though, I love dogs......

I did try to slow down but the "just knew" thing was that it all happened in real time. It was a little dog and I came up upon it only a short way from it. Im thinking damn it I hope he doesnt veer out I better slow. just as I slow out down he runs and is hit.

And to GirlNIN I told my wife but not the kids. If anyone read about how my daughter reacted when our dog got sick you would understand not telling the kids.

What sucks is this is right on the way home so I pass the spot a couple times a day.

Don't know if it would help you feel better but maybe you could make a donation to an animal shelter?

i had to break the news once that i saw a guy's dog get run over by a taxi. a few days after i saw it happen, i saw a "Dog Missing, Children Devastated" flyer taped to a light pole with a picture of the dog.

that wasn't a fun call to make

There is a poster hanging on one of the exit ramps of the highway near here with a missing dog poster that offers a $10,000 Reward
