I was at a performance of the national anthem recently and there was an interpreter there signing what was being sung. I realized that every time I have seen this done, it has been a woman doing the signing. I don't think that I have even seen a man as an interpreter for the hearing impaired. Has anyone else ever noticed this? Is there any science/study behind it? Are women better at learning sign languange?

I remember seeing interviews with Marlee Matlin and her interpreter was a man.

While I doubt that women are better are learning sign language I can offer these two bits of info:
1. a male friend and his girl were taking ASL classes. He dropped out before completing and she went on to work in the field.
2. Womens brains are geared for communication. See: The Female Brain by Louann Brizendine M.D. for more on this.

I heard that the only sign language women understand is a raised hand for when they aren't following directions.
