Is it trite to think that sticking together as a nation - especially helping those who have family depending on him/her - is a necessary thing?

I tend to get the sense lately (logically and otherwise) that this notion has seen its day in our country - that not only (in the words of Ben Franklin) should you not "rip down your hedge" but you should also destroy anything not found within your own hedge.

It's frightening to wake up to what's going on...

Upon rereading this - it seems corny even to mention "our country" ...

So are you trying to say you just realized nobody really gives a fuck about anybody but themselves?

Yeah really. Maybe during times of war but really when has this nation ever been about helping out your fellow man? I mean the government can't even agree on a plan for universal health care for god's sakes.

good one. :)

But this turns out to be a crisis.

I know from personal experience that doing good by someone comes back on oneself and that being concerned with only oneself is slow suicide.

It's disheartening to find that we take this "no one gives a fuck about anyone else" attitude for granted and I think provides for the basis for the "there's no hope for the future" attitude that everyone seems to have these days.

I think there is a direct correlation between developing capitalism in a nation and that nations citizens need to put themselves first. Themselves above family, above religion, above their nation etc etc.

Why do the people of less "developed" nations/cultures seem to think in terms of "what is good for my family/my religion?" as opposed to our modern mindset "what is good for me, what do i get out of it?"

I'm not arguing either side right now, just throwing this out there.

theres tons of people that volunteer their time and money,i guess i dont get the gist of this thread. i believe things are going as they should, sure i could do more but that would mean less r&f and .net,i was happier and more giving before i refound r&f and messageboards so maybe we all should leave the nets and satellite talk radio and start giving more of ourselves.just thinkin out in type, maybe my 1 year anniversary will be my last day

Me neither. I check the little box on the back of my drivers license allowing them to harvest my organs when I die. Which will hopefully really help someone out. But I refused to jumpstart the car next to me last weekend because I was in too much of a hurry.

I'm not in favor of this life, but people in other societies turn their entire paychecks over to their families, they take care of their elderly, they put their needs dead last and do not stray to follow their dreams.

In our society people only give of themselves when it is convienent for them (generally) and most of them expect some sort of recognition or reward. Most people donate their extra money NOT their only money, so it's rarely a hardship for them to help. That is the way it should be imo, but that's the point I was getting from this thread. You have to take care of yourself before you can take care of anyone else.. Mother Theresa was overrated.

Unfortunately, sometimes fear prevents people, especially women, from lending a helping hand where they otherwise would have. We hear stories about people being coaxed into this trap only to be robbed, raped, beaten or murdered. Odds are, it's a legitimate guy in need of assistance, but no one wants to take that chance and become a vulnerable statistic.

Look at that nice girl in Silence of the Lambs. She was almost a fat-girl suit because she tried to help some gentleman with a van.

Sometimes everyone's painfully shy. Like Amelie. (stole that from the back of the DVD box)

i believe community is built from the bottom up. not from the top down. when it comes from the top- it usually instills more resentment, than community.
takes only a few people to come together to make somthing happen; but so many entities tend to get in the way making even the simple joys cost prohibitive.
many of you have heard me type about moving from a metro area to a very rural area, and one of my biggest motivators was the obsticals that were regularly placed in one's way by local govt... and blah blah blah... california...grumble.....their loss.
