Help me find a show

I cannot remember the name of the show, but there is a show about this kid who is a murderer and he is adopted by a police officer and the police office feeds the kid information about other murderers and the kid figures it out and will eventually kill the murderer.
What's the name of the show? Apparently there is also a book, and I want that info too.
