Dear Sweet Dr. Steve,

I have bad Carpel Tunnel syndome in my right wrist from useing a Chef Knife for years. The other Dr.'s have told me to wear a wrist splint to help the pain. But that is totally unpractical and out of the question.

Is there anything I can do to get this helped out? It really bothers me at night when I'm trying to sleep.

Love Lenny

CWC:

Repetitive movement of the wrist can cause enlargement of the tissues in the wrist, creating pressure on the nerve going to the thumb and first three fingers (called the Median Nerve).

http://onlineemploymentjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/carpal.jpg

This causes pain and "electrical" sensations in the hand, generally of the thumb, index, middle, and half of the ring finger. It can also cause discomfort in the middle of the night, with numbness, pain and cramping being a big problem.

All a wrist splint does is keep you from flexing and extending your wrist. If you do that long enough, the muscles will atrophy (shrink) and take the pressure off the nerve.

Some docs try cortisone injections, but these only work temporarily.

The only long term solution to this is surgery; there's a new kind of "endoscopic" carpal tunnel release that will get you back to work in a lot less time. You need to check with the neurosurgeons in your area to see if any of them do this procedure.

Here's a video of the procedure. the assholes who made this video apparently never heard of a "pop" screen. jeez.

That was for ganglion cysts.

Dammit I wish I had a prize closet.

We used to recommend hitting ganglion cysts with a Bible regularly. The standard Bible in the home being heavy, but with a flexible leather cover. Perfect for shattering a ganglion cyst against a hard chunk of bone.
